GCU has a long established history of delivering education for Specialist Community Public Health Nursing (SCPHN).

This course provides education and training in the promotion of health and wellbeing at individual, group and community level to meet the challenging and diverse needs of individuals, families and communities of the future.

Working in the field of preventative and anticipatory care, the SCPHN Nurse occupies a unique position within the health service. It is a child and family centred public health role with a collaborative and empowering approach.

The expertise of the Health Visitor lies in rapidly assessing client needs, while building rapport and supporting and encouraging people in making the adaptations and changes associated with becoming parents.

As such good communication skills are essential. Leading a team of skill mix healthcare workers, a key part of the health visitors’ role involves a collaborative approach which enables clients to take ownership of their own healthcare needs and get the best healthcare outcomes for the child and family.

On completion of the SCPHN programme, students will exit with a PgD in SCPHN, a Recordable Community Practitioner Nurse Prescribing qualification and entry to 3rd part of the NMC register.

The MSc Nursing Studies (Pre-registration) aims to equip graduate student nurses with advanced critical thinking skills, as well as the practical skills and competencies to deliver compassionate, competent, person-centred, effective, safe and high quality health care. Successful completion of the programme will facilitate graduates’ ability to meet current and emerging health needs of individuals, families and communities within a local, national and global context.

Recognising the changing context of healthcare and the profile of nurses needed, the MSc Nursing Studies (Pre-registration) believes that its graduates will make a significant contribution to ‘improving lives’ at an individual, community and global level. Students will be encouraged and challenged to work with contemporary approaches to health and social care in order to meet the needs of patients, clients and service users in a range of primary and secondary care settings. Assessment strategies include care studies, essays, patchwork assessments, reflective portfolios, OSCAs and OSCEs, examinations, seminars, presentations, debates, vivas, projects and dissertations.

Learning Teaching Methods

To prepare students for their future role they will engage and become active participants within the learning process, learning collaboratively and individually. This will include use of the virtual learning environment and the state-of-the-art interprofessional simulation suite where student nurses will develop the skills to prepare them for the variety of clinical learning experiences they will encounter throughout their programme.

Assessment

All modules provide opportunities for you to receive feedback on your academic work. The length and nature of assessments is dependent on module specific learning outcomes. Examples of assessment activities within the programme include written assignments on a given public health perspective, open book examinations, project plans, research proposals and a small scale research study or systematic review.

Modules will have either one larger summative assessment at the end of the module or two smaller assessments, spaced throughout the module. A Pass mark is awarded at 50% or above, and students must gain Pass marks in all modules.

The D.Psych in Counselling Psychology is aimed at graduate psychologists wishing to enhance their applied skills in the area of counselling and applied psychological practice. The programme offers clinical training in both humanistic (person-centred) and cognitive-behavioural approaches to psychological practice and situates these within a range of clinical contexts.

Approved by the Health and Care Professions Council. Students receiving this award are eligible to apply for registration with the HCPC as a Counselling Psychologist.

Diabetes is a disease that is on the increase worldwide. The demands on HCPs are rising at an alarming rate and HCPs need the education basis to provide competent appropriate care.

The programme takes a multi-disciplinary approach to the study of diabetes, allowing integration of key discipline areas in the understanding of the biology of the disease, its diagnosis and the understanding of the complications of diabetes, their prevention and management. It emphasises the importance of research and development in the subject area and exposes you to the latest advances in the understanding of health and disease; equipping you with the competencies to take part in active research.

Many of our graduates go on to work in the field of diabetes – in general practice, in hospitals and in industry. Some with a suitable medical background choose to study for the UK General Medical Council exams (PLAB 1 and 2) and go on to work in the NHS.

The MSc Diagnostic Imaging programme aims to enhance students’ professional development enabling them to become leaders in advancing diagnostic imaging practice.

Our programme develops advanced skills, such as critical thinking, evidence based practice and research and leadership, providing the skills to effect change based on best and current practice. Building on current knowledge and clinical experience, students will gain an insight of advancing practices.

Students will be expected to use their learning to inform professional discussion and debate. Our teaching team consists of academic experts and clinical specialists, ensuring our content is relevant, current and evidence based. Students can choose to study on the broad based MSc Diagnostic Imaging Programme or on one of our defined area of practice optional pathways; MSc Diagnostic Imaging (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) and MSc Diagnostic Imaging (Medical Ultrasound).

Many of our graduates have gone on to secure promoted positions in management and areas of advancing practice, others have continued to doctorate study.

Optional Pathway: Medical Ultrasound Studies

For those who have an interest in Medical Ultrasound, the MSc Diagnostic Imaging programme offers a pathway of study to gain theoretical knowledge of the physical principles and an understanding of the clinical application. Our teaching team consists of academic experts and clinical specialists, ensuring our content is relevant, current, and evidence based. Our state-of-the-art simulation facilities (Medaphor scan trainers) and sonographic equipment allow opportunities to develop and rehearse practical scanning skills and gain feedback on ability.

The programme aims to enable practitioners, normally from outside the UK, to achieve the knowledge and understanding needed to develop their current practice further or to pursue a career in ultrasound*.

*This programme does not assess nor certify competency to practice in the field of medical ultrasound.

Students on the medical ultrasound studies pathway will follow the module structure given under the MSc Diagnostic Imaging Programme Description, substituting the Advancing Practices in Imaging 2 module with:

Principles of Practice in Medical Ultrasound (30 credits) - Here the students will learn the underpinning theory of ultrasound production, safe & effective practice, patient care, nomenclature, reporting skills, litigation, ethics and image optimisation.

Assessment Methods

A range of assessment methods are used that are appropriate to the content and mode of delivery of each module. These include examinations, written assignments, reflective portfolio, oral and/or poster presentations.

Teaching Methods

We use a blended learning approach including key note lectures, tutorials, workshops simulation, case-studies, student led seminars, e-learning, and self-directed study. Active participation in the learning is essential, both as an individual and as part of a group.

Employment Opportunities

Many of our graduates have gone on to secure promoted positions in management, gastro-intestinal advanced practice, MRI research, and sonographer-led ultrasound services.

If you have a science degree with a substantial proportion of physiology and biochemistry, this course will enable you to apply that knowledge in the context of nutrition and dietetics. You will learn about nutritional science and its application in health and illness, together with life-cycle nutrition, biochemistry, physiology and food science.

The combination of academic and clinical practice learning activities throughout the course will enable you to develop a patient-centred approach and equip you with the knowledge and skills to become a registered dietitian. An expansion of interest in food in relation to health, alongside the changing nature of the NHS, has extended the boundaries of dietetics to include a wide range of professional opportunities.

Current employment rates are good with most graduates, who are prepared to work throughout the UK, being employed within six months of graduation.

Accreditation

Graduates are eligible to apply for registration with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC).

Clinical Placement

To comply with HCPC registration requirements, you must complete three clinical placements, which must be undertaken in an approved hospital or community dietetics departments.

Placements will be allocated centrally and you may be placed anywhere throughout Scotland for each of your three placements.

Progression to Masters

An MSc dissertation can be undertaken following successful completion of the PgD. This can be either part or full time, and costs vary depending on time between graduation and commencement of MSc project.

Employment Opportunities

An expansion of interest in food in relation to health, alongside the changing nature of the NHS, has extended the boundaries of dietetics to include a wide range of professional opportunities.

Employment can either be found in a clinical setting, usually within the NHS, or in NHS community practices. Dieticians also find employment in many other related fields including research, the food industry, consultancy and private practice, social services, media, health education and health promotion. However, the majority of graduates from the programme will initially be employed as NHS hospital-based dietitians.

Current employment rates are good with most graduates who are prepared to work throughout the UK being employed within six months of graduation.

This accredited programme enables graduates of any discipline the opportunity to obtain an occupational therapy degree at Masters level.

Internationally recognised, the programme explores both the theoretical and practical contexts of occupational therapy in today’s society.

Occupational Therapists are skilled professionals who help people of all ages to carry out activities they need or want to do, but as a result of physical or mental illness, disability or ageing, they are prevented from doing. They are employed within hospital and a wide variety of community settings, often working as part of a health and/or social care team.

The programme is considered a broadening MSc as the subject matter is different to that of your first degree, but will be more demanding and require an increased level of self-directed study.

Learning and Teaching

The programme uses a variety of learning and teaching methods, including lectures, seminars, practical classes and practice education placements which explore the theoretical and practice contexts of occupational therapy in today’s society.

Clinical Placement

You will work alongside a practice educator, a registered occupational therapist, or another health and social care provider. Minimum of 1000 hours of assessed placement experience.

Three/four practice placements during the two-year programme will offer diverse learning opportunities including one placement in a role emergent setting.

Assessment Methods

Assessment is viewed as an integral part of the total learning experience, therefore the assessment strategy is linked to the learning outcomes for individual modules - for example, verbal presentations, poster presentations, written assignments, case studies, reflective reports, portfolio development, research proposal, practice education and dissertation.

Teaching Methods

Independent learning is critical to the programme and teaching methods, which include key lectures, group working, tutorials and seminars. A variety of methods are employed, including university-based study, practice education placements and work-based learning which explore the theoretical and practical contexts of occupational therapy in today's society.

Employment Opportunities

On successful completion of the programme graduates are eligible to apply for registration with the Health and Care Professions Council (the UK regulatory body) as an Occupational Therapist.
