This is a stimulating and challenging programme, integrating theory and practice in the discipline of nursing. Clinical nursing practice is at the centre of the programme and takes place in a variety of settings in the Leeds area. It includes regional healthcare specialities, such as renal, liver, neurology and cardiac.

You’ll study at the University campus and through our Virtual Learning Environment. You’ll experience a variety of different field-specific clinical placements, including acute and long-term settings, and will care for people in hospital and in the community.

Accreditation

Students who successfully complete this programme will be able to register with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC)

Course content

The first year of the course is designed to introduce you to theoretical knowledge, skills and attitudes required for clinical practice. Underpinning subjects, such as biology, sociology, psychology, communication and the theory and practice of nursing, are taught via a level 3 (degree level) module. You spend time in clinical practice in this year, where you'll develop a number of nursing skills and apply your theoretical knowledge.

Over the next two years of the programme you'll further develop your knowledge and skills, but more specifically in relation to adult nursing. The first module of this year will be at level 3, but all remaining modules will be at Master’s level. You study modules specific to nursing, as well as more generic leadership and research modules. You’ll have access to modern School of Healthcare facilities.

There is the opportunity to study an optional module from a menu centred on either research, advanced practice or management. The optional modules include the opportunity to have an observational placement abroad.

Clinical experience

Clinical experience during the programme will include some weekend and night duty shifts to meet the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) recommendations. Time is also given in the programme for independent study and assessment preparation.

Holidays are allocated for the whole three years to meet University and NMC regulations and cannot be negotiated. We make every effort to link these to school holidays at Christmas, Easter and in August.

The Clinical Assessment PGCert is suitable for healthcare practitioners, such as nurses and pharmacists, involved in the clinical assessment of patients. This includes specialist and advanced practitioners in areas such as community, accident and emergency, high-dependency, and critical care outreach.

The programme offers the knowledge and skills to enable you to assess patients from “head-to-toe” and develop evidence-based management strategies. You’ll develop practical skills in taking health history, auscultation, percussion and palpation in addition to diagnostic reasoning skills.

You’ll learn to evaluate and apply current policy, national guidelines and research. You’ll also learn to recognise accountabilities and responsibilities, and awareness of your personal and professional limitations.

The programme may enable you to move towards advanced practitioner status and gain access to the MSc Advanced Practice at the University of Leeds.

The compulsory modules are fundamental building blocks in your learning. The Clinical Examination module provides essential knowledge and skills necessary for a patient-centred, systems-based assessment of patients.

The Management of Patient’s Clinical Conditions gives the student the opportunity to take assessment data a stage further. It requires you to evaluate information elicited from patient assessment and develop diagnostic reasoning skills.

The Education in Primary Care PGCert is for health professionals working and teaching in primary care in the UK. It will suit any primary care educator, including nurse practitioners, GPs, community pharmacists and practice nurses, intending GP trainers and training programme directors.

The programme offers a deep understanding of education in primary care and equips you to succeed in learning and teaching at a wide range of levels and primary care disciplines, as demonstrated by our alumni.

All facilitators on the programme are GP trainers, undergraduate tutors or training programme directors. You’ll benefit from links with current practitioners and expert researchers working at the Academic Unit of Primary Care at the Leeds Institute of Health Sciences. You’ll study four modules, all focused on primary care. Each module consists of two teaching days alongside online activities and discussions.

You’ll reflect on education in primary care, critically examine key aspects of your work and gain skills and ideas for your own development and the development of others. Students also have the opportunity to critically evaluate current research and contribute to the evidence base in education in primary healthcare.

The programme aims to develop the skills to implement and evaluate a curriculum, as well as critically evaluate consultation models and personal consultation skills. This is the only programme approved by Health Education Yorkshire and the Humber that offers teaching on consultation skills.

Learning and teaching

The programme is taught through a blended learning approach, combining face-to-face learning (at teaching days) with online activities.

Teaching is mostly in small groups with a facilitator, ensuring a personalised learning approach. You’ll learn through lectures, practical classes, tutorials, seminars and supervised research projects. We make extensive use of IT and a wide range of materials is available to enable you to study at your own pace and to enhance and extend on the material taught formally. Besides access to online materials, the Virtual Learning Environment offers continued peer and tutor support.

Assessment

Assessment for all four modules is through written assignments, submitted approximately six weeks after the end of the module.

You’ll learn about the ethical issues that arise across medicine and healthcare practice, but you’ll also have the opportunity to specialise in areas that interest you or suit your career aspirations. You’ll take modules on topics such as ethical issues at the beginning and end of life, autonomy and psychiatry, professional issues and allocating medical resources fairly, and focus on a topic of your choice to complete an independent dissertation.

We’re constantly developing the course and consulting with professionals working in the field, so it’s informed by the most recent developments in practice. But you’ll be guided by active researchers with expertise in teaching ethics across medical disciplines, giving you the chance to engage with the latest academic arguments and debates.

The programme is designed for people who’ve never studied ethics or medical ethics, although we do also have applicants who have studied philosophy before. The Diagnostic Imaging MSc is designed to match the professional development needs of the diagnostic imaging practitioner and the changing needs of patients in the modern healthcare system. It aims to develop highly competent practitioners who can make a real contribution to healthcare services.

This multi-disciplinary programme will appeal to a range of healthcare professionals including radiographers, clinical physiologists, mammographers, sonographers, medical doctors, nurses, clinical scientists. It offers:

  • specialist clinical expertise underpinned by in-depth theoretical knowledge, including of specialist areas of diagnostic imaging, such as medical ultrasound and breast imaging.
  • an understanding of the evidence and research base of the discipline.

We have a highly successful record of teaching breast imaging and medical ultrasound at postgraduate level. You’ll benefit from being part of the School of Medicine, with its world-leading research and expertise.

You can also study this subject at Postgraduate Diploma (120 credits) and Certificate (60 or 75 credits) levels. Study for the Postgraduate Diploma normally takes one year full time (specific module combinations only) or two years part time. Study for the Postgraduate Certificate normally takes one year part time.

Accreditation

The MSc Diagnostic Imaging offered by the University of Leeds was approved by the College of Radiographers for a period of five years, from June 2016 to June 2021 inclusive. The programme is also accredited by the Consortium for the Accreditation of Sonographic Education (CASE).

Exemptions

Students obtaining an MSc which includes the Mammography Technique module will be eligible to apply for the College of Radiographers’ Postgraduate Award in Mammography.

Course content

The programme content reflects the increasing demand for focused and in-depth training in specialist areas of diagnostic imaging. It is both research-led and evidence based.

On the PGCert programme you study modules worth 60 or 75 credits.  On the PGDip programme you study modules worth 120 credits. If you study part time you will study fewer modules in each year. On the MSc programme you study modules worth 180 credits. All students study a combination of Science and Technology, Professional Issues and Imaging Practice modules. A wide range of optional modules allow you to tailor your studies to your professional interests.

Some modules listed below contain a number of options. The Professional Work Based Learning module enables you to undertake a work-based project. The Negotiated Imaging Practice module offers a range of options, including: Breast Ultrasound, Cardiac Ultrasound, Musculoskeletal Ultrasound or Vascular Ultrasound.

In addition, we may support alternative areas of clinical practice by negotiation. Each module (15 credit equivalent) requires 3 to 5 days attendance at the University (for 30 credits this is 6-10 days), in addition to independent learning and practical skill development in order to achieve success in assessment and be of value to the student and their workplace. Students who already have a Postgraduate Diagnostic Imaging qualification may access certain 30-credit modules on a free-standing basis.

Clinical Research Methods MSc is a funded programme for health professionals (not medical or dental), specifically designed to meet the requirements of the HEE/NIHR Integrated Clinical Academic Programme. The programme provides clinical research training, which can be used as the basis for a career in research, working towards a PhD or providing underpinning understanding for research management positions in the NHS.

The programme is designed to be student-centred. You’ll be able to shape your learning to specific training needs and clinical settings through your choice of optional modules, focus of assessment and clinically-focused research dissertation.

You'll develop your learning and understanding of clinical research in a stimulating, multi-professional environment, alongside PhD scholars and Masters students. The MSc draws on expertise from the School of Healthcare and the Leeds Institute of Health Sciences, with staff contributing across modules in areas of expertise.

The bursary is only available to national applicants. There are limited places available i.e. fivefull-time and five part-time funded places. Each place is supported by abursary to meet the programme fees and full salary backfill to employing NHS organisations,as per a contract with Health Education England (HEE)/National Institute forHealth Research (NIHR).

The programme is also open to fee-paying applicants.

Course content

Compulsory modules give you a firm foundation in theoretical and applied research methods form a range of perspectives. The range of optional modules allows you to develop specific knowledge and skills to enhance your dissertation and your research skills after completion of the programme. The 12,000-word dissertation you produce towards the end of your studies, allows you to develop in-depth and applied clinical research knowledge and skills in an area of importance related to your clinical area. If you study this programme part time you will study fewer modules in each year.

This programme combines a research project with taught modules. The taught modules fall into two categories:

  • Core Research Skill Theory - Introduction to Research Methodology and Ethics, Core Epidemiology, Statistical Methods and Transferable Skills 1
  • Dental Public Health and Theoretical Basis of Public Health - Principles of Dental Public Health, Foundations of International Health, Principles of Public Health and Health Promotion.

The research dissertation you work on over both semesters allows you to develop practical research skills.

Learning and teaching

The programme is delivered as a series of modules, containing a mix of lectures, seminars, workshops and practicals, complemented by e-learning.

The learning on the programme enables you to:

  • critically analyse and debate the theories and issues related to dental public health and effectively communicate these ideas
  • talk knowledgeably and construct arguments around the social, political and economic factors determining the health of populations
  • analyse and synthesise evidence based research and its application to the practice of dental public health
  • develop and evaluate appropriate oral health protection and promotion initiatives at the population level
  • develop and apply research methodology by conducting a specified programme of research under one-to-one supervision.

Assessment

You’ll be assessed through a combination of in-course assessments, end of module written examination and an oral examination on your research dissertation.

This new MRes has been designed to provide you with an opportunity to develop your research skills in applied medical ethics. It provides an excellent stepping stone to PhD research.

You will begin with intensive research methods training which will allow you to develop your skills under the supervision of expert tutors. You’ll gain a range of skills and valuable experience for a career in academic or professional research.

You will then spend the remainder of the year writing an extended dissertation in which you can examine in depth an area of particular interest to you within the rich field of medical ethics, with the support of a research supervisor.

You will meet with your research supervisor on campus in Leeds on a regular basis. If you are unable to come to Leeds the <a href="http://courses.leeds.ac.uk/site/scripts/course.php?courseID=25209" target="_blank">MRes is also available as an online programme.

As an MRes student you will have the opportunity to audit any relevant modules from our taught MA Biomedical & Health Care Ethics.

Course content

The Masters by research is made up of a 30-credit taught Research Methods module and a 150-credit dissertation.

IDEA5401M Research Methods

Delivered online, this module will provide you with training in core skills and a variety of key research methodologies for undertaking high quality research in medical ethics. It also addresses methodological issues raised in the conduct of inter-disciplinary research. It will equip you to undertake a longer independent supervised dissertation on an aspect of ethics of your choice.

During the module we will cover research skills,including identifying a suitable topic for research, bibliography and referencing. We will also explore a range of methodological approaches to the discipline of ethics.

IDEA5402M Dissertation (MRes)

You will produce an independent piece of work analysing in detail an aspect of medical ethics. The work will enable you to exhibit both some awareness of detail of theoretical ethical considerations and to indicate their application to issues in medical ethics, where relevant making use of your experience in the context of professional life in medicine and healthcare. You will be supported through the process by a research supervisor.

Learning and teaching

The Research Methods module is delivered online through the University’s Virtual Learning Environment (VLE), and will be available in that form to both campus-based and online students, though campus based students may wish to undertake the tutor meetings for this module in face to face form.

Of course,independent research is also vital to this programme to develop your skills andhelp you develop your own ideas and interests.

Assessment

The dissertation (30,000 words) will form the bulk of the assessment for the MRes. During the Research Methods module you will be guided through the process of preparing for the dissertation, through a range of assessments including an annotated bibliography, a reflective log, a research proposal and a poster presentation.
