You should consider this programme if you are a nurse or midwife with a degree who wishes to pursue a career in health visiting or school nursing.

This programme has been developed in response to on-going work by the Department of Health to re-affirm the essential role of the school nurse and health visitor in delivering a universal and early intervention service to children, young people and their families.

This programme has been developed with local partner healthcare organisations. It is intended to meet the needs and expectations of the new agenda and make a difference to the health and well-being of individuals and communities. This programme leads to a nationally recognised qualification and registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Council.

Please note Prescribing for Specialist Community Public Health Nurses is not a core course for the programme. However, most NHS employers will require you to complete this within your programme of study.

The aims of the programme are:

- To enable you to integrate the study of health, policy, research and evidence-based practice within the context of specialist community public health nursing (SCPHN) practice

- To facilitate you to explore and debate policy, theory, and research related to health visiting and school nursing within the public health context

We offer post graduate pre-registration nursing in two fields of nursing (adult and mental health) and have excellent links with the NHS and other care providers. Nursing skills are taught and assessed in four laboratories. Learning clinical skills in the laboratories ensures that students develop competence in a safe, protected environment. In order to develop multi-professional and collaborative working, there is shared learning between nursing and midwifery students in areas such as biological and social sciences, informatics, research, ethics, health policy and management.

This programme offers both practice and theoretical learning in a variety of institutional and community settings. For adult nursing, placements are in hospitals and the local community, such as GP practices and with community nurses and health visitors. Mental health nursing placements are much more community-focused, in clinics, forensic services and health centres.

Applications for these programmes should be made via UCAS. Please note that this programme is not available to international students.

- To develop the personal and professional skills needed to competently undertake the role and responsibilities of a registered nurse

The content for this programme, which is offered by the University of Greenwich and Canterbury Christ Church University, is applied closely to the practice of speech and language therapy. The programme gives students a detailed understanding of the changes that occur and difficulties that can arise for the individual who seeks the help of a speech and language therapist.

Speech and language therapists work in hospital wards and outpatient departments, mainstream and special schools, day centres and clients' homes, and courtrooms, prisons and young offenders' institutions. Practice placements are organised to give experience of a number of these settings.

The programme aims to develop speech and language therapists who are autonomous, accountable practitioners, competent and confident to contribute their evidence-based profession-specific skills and knowledge in the delivery of health, education and social care for users of speech and language therapy services and their families.

The programme is structured to maximise opportunities for learning how to work in an interprofessional and multi-agency context and within a changing workforce. A wide range of assessments are used including written assessments, presentations and assessment of placement education.
