This programme focuses on the promotion and maintenance of diet and activity-related public health and wellbeing. There is a clear consensus that new professional and scientific needs are emerging in this field. This programme is one of the first to recognise this need and as such will contribute substantially towards higher level qualifications in this emerging area.

There is now considerable demand for multi-skilled individuals with knowledge and understanding of research, policy and practice in both nutrition and physical activity. This programme equips you with such skills, as well as providing unique insight into the fascinating interactions between physical activity, nutrition and health through blending epidemiology, psychology and policy-relevant research.

The programme is specifically designed for qualified dieticians, physical activity specialists, and other health professionals such as nurses, physiotherapists and occupational therapists who want to advance in the important area of nutrition-related and physical activity-related public health. It is also suitable for newly-qualified graduates seeking to develop a career in this area.

The results of the latest Research Exercise Framework rate the Centre for Exercise, Nutrition and Health Sciences as the leading UK centre of research excellence within the field of physical activity, nutrition and health research. In addition, 100 per cent of its evidence research impact was judged to be of the highest level.

Programme structure

Work is assessed through written assignments, presentations, written reports or research proposals. There are no formal examinations. All units are compulsory, along with a research dissertation. Part-time students will be guided in their choice of units for each year of study.

Dissertation
During the final term, you complete an original research investigation and dissertation (10,000-15,000 words) on an approved public health-based topic, incorporating nutrition or physical activity or a combination of the two.

Careers

This programme is designed for students who want to pursue careers in research, public health policy, public health consultancy and the implementation of programmes for promoting health within the public, private or non-profit sectors. The programme also targets professional development by enhancing the practice and delivery of working professionals, such as physiotherapists, nurses or teachers.

Most students go on to become public health project officers, researchers, health promotion specialists, lifestyle managers, nutrition or physical activity project coordinators, or public health and policy consultants.

This programme offers a fascinating range of subjects, including molecular biology, genetics, biochemistry, microbiology, immunology, tissue engineering, clinical medicine, laboratory management and statistics.

It is accredited by the Institute of Biomedical Science and is based at one of the largest transfusion centres in the world, enabling visits to manufacturing, testing and tissue typing sections. You will learn from specialist lecturers based at the University, NHS Blood and Transplant (NHSBT), and NHS hospitals, and have an opportunity to become fully embedded in an NHS environment while you develop your knowledge.

The programme will give you extensive practical experience of transfusion and transplantation, allowing you to gain skills that directly relate to your future career. As well as being academically interesting, this continually developing area of healthcare science has a major impact on patients' quality of life.

The programme:
-Is one of just two specialist full-time courses in transfusion and transplantation, and is a recommended course at level seven in the Career Framework for Health.
-Gives you the opportunity to carry out your MSc project with NHSBT research staff within the transfusion centre.
-Has high contact hours, with teaching each day and practical classes.
-Includes a large skills component (eg writing in different formats, conference and publication skills, assignments with specific study aims).
-Includes laboratory management, a key skill required at level seven.
-Attracts a diverse range of students (about 50 per cent overseas students), including new graduates, those working in blood centres or blood transfusion/haematology in hospitals, or training to lecture in transfusion.

Programme structure

The programme comprises eight taught units that run from September to March and a research project that begins in May and runs until August. Example project topics have included:
-A study on red cell antibody formation in trauma patients
-Optimisation of platelet antigen detection using recombinant proteins
-Expression of red cell membrane proteins during large-scale red cell culture
-A comparison of stem cell mobilisation drugs for stem cell transplantation

Assessments are designed to teach skills such as comprehension, scientific writing in different formats and conference skills, and to further knowledge in subject areas not covered in the lectures. Students must pass the taught component to be able to progress to the project.

Part-time students complete the Postgraduate Certificate components in their first year and the Postgraduate Diploma in the second. The project is usually taken during year three to complete the MSc.

Careers

Some of the career paths that graduates have followed include: blood transfusion and fetal medicine research, working for a bone marrow donor laboratory or bone marrow registry, biostatistics, graduate entry to medical school, NHS Clinical Scientist Training programme, and progression to PhD study in several areas including cancer biology and stem cell regeneration.

This collaborative, interdisciplinary pathway brings together key academics within the South West Doctoral Training Partnership whose research and teaching strengths are in the broad area of health and wellbeing - in particular, lifestyle behaviours and public health.

Students on this pathway acquire a range of skills to develop and evaluate interventions and strategies to improve health behaviour. Your work will make a major impact on our understanding of the social science that underpins avoidable health problems, and will build research capacity at the interface of biomedical and social sciences, both within and beyond academia.

Dissertation
Over the summer you will complete a research-based dissertation of up to 15,000 words, individually supervised by a member of staff from one of the centres in the school.

Careers

The MRes in Health and Wellbeing offers useful preparation for a number of careers. Foremost, the MRes is the academic basis and preparation for students choosing the 1+3 programme (the first year is the MRes and the +3 the PhD programme).

The MRes emphasises ESRC-accredited research methods training, the ability to plan, research and write a sophisticated dissertation, and the ability to think in broad theoretical and interdisciplinary terms about challenging issues. These provide an ideal introduction to academic research.

After achieving the MRes, our students go on to employment in a range of careers that touch on areas of government policy and health promotion at local, national and international level, while other students have continued within academic careers, taking up doctoral positions and research associate positions in UK and international universities.

The programme also establishes a sound research training base, along with practical applications, which gives our students a competitive edge for different types of employment, including research, policy and intervention implementation.

This programme aims to provide you with a firm foundation in biomedical research by enhancing your knowledge, understanding and critical awareness of the scientific method and practical experience in an area related to your interests. Taught units provide intensive training in research methodology, experimental design, statistical analyses and data interpretation. Skills training in verbal and written communication is also emphasised.

The core of the programme is an eight-month research project, conducted within one of the University of Bristol's internationally recognised research groups in either the Faculty of Health Sciences or the Faculty of Biomedical Sciences. Opportunities will be available in laboratory or clinical-based investigations.

The programme is suitable for medical, dental and veterinary students interested in pursuing a research-intensive intercalation option after three years of study. It is also suitable for graduates in medicine, dentistry, veterinary science and bioscience subjects who wish to develop their research skills.

Programme structure

This programme is delivered by research scientists and clinicians through lectures, practical sessions, seminars and tutorials.

Unit 1: Introduction to Research Methods in Health Sciences Research (10 credits).
This unit introduces a variety of research methods used in basic and applied clinical research including: finding and reading relevant research information; presenting research results; basic statistical analysis; data interpretation; ethics; public engagement; and commercialising research.

Unit 2: Further Research Methods in Health Sciences Research (20 credits).
This unit aims to develop further knowledge and practical experience in statistical analyses, experimental design and laboratory methods and includes training in the use of a statistical software package and practical experience in several laboratory techniques.

Unit 3: Project Proposal in Health Sciences Research (20 credits).
This unit involves planning and writing a research project proposal (4500 words), which includes a literature review, aims, impact, research plan, ethical considerations, contingency plans, timetable and references.

Unit 4: Research Club in Health Sciences Research (10 credits).
This unit aims to develop your ability to present, critically evaluate and discuss scientific findings by contributing to journal clubs, attending and summarising research seminars and presenting your own research.

Unit 5: Research Project in Health Sciences Research (120 credits).
During this unit you will gain extensive experience in scientific/clinical research by conducting an independent project related to an area of interest to you. You will write up your research in the form of a thesis (10,000 words), and present and discuss your work in a viva and research symposium.

Careers

This programme is suitable for those with a clinical or biosciences background who wish to develop their research skills before embarking on a research/clinical career in academia or the pharmaceutical industry. It provides the ideal foundation for further studies leading to a PhD.

This programme is designed to enable students from a range of professional backgrounds to develop their knowledge and understanding of the ways in which the theories, principles and practices of counselling can be used to support the personal and academic development of learners in all phases of education.

Through the use of case studies, working with visiting professionals, engaging with research literature and carrying out practical activities, you will learn how to enhance your professional practice through the use of counselling skills. We use a range of innovative and creative approaches to assessment which enables you to demonstrate your research skills, critical thinking and reflection on practice.

Units in this programme focus on theoretical approaches to counselling and the application of counselling principles in educational settings. The programme is particularly suitable for those professionals looking to support the inclusion and achievement of learners within their own professional context in critically reflecting upon the importance of social and emotional health and wellbeing and its link to attainment.
