Introduction

This course aims to equip nurses and midwives to develop an enhanced and applied knowledge base in Health Visiting Practice allowing you to exit with the required Nursing & Midwifery Council (NMC) recordable qualification as a Specialist Community Public Health Nurse (SCPHN)-Health Visiting (NMC 2004).

The course is delivered in collaboration with NHS Health Board and local authority partners in Western Isles, Highland, Tayside and Forth Valley, combining academic teaching and practice learning throughout the course.

On successful completion of the course you will be able to respond to the demands of contemporary public health practice in the community and to work to influence and improve the standard of care for children, young people and their families.

Academic requirements

All entrants to the MSc/Graduate Diploma in Early Years Practice (Health Visiting) Programmes must meet the following requirements (NMC 2004):

  • Valid registration on the Professional register maintained by the NMC;
  • The registrant must have developed their own knowledge, skills and competence beyond NMC registration, i.e. normally two year’s post registration experience as a registered nurse or midwife however other relevant professional experience can be considered.
  • In order to protect the public the NMC registrants are required to have an up-to-date membership of the Disclosure Scotland: Protection of Vulnerable Groups scheme
  • Arrangements made to have a Practice Teacher allocated to the student for the duration of the Programme (allocated by the relevant health board area following successful interview).
  • Students must demonstrate the ability to study at degree level (minimum academic SCQF Level 9) (NMC 2004; Standard 5);
  • Understand the programme requirements regarding length of programme;
  • Support from Senior Practice Line Manager.

Course objectives

The course curriculum is designed to equip nurses and midwives to deliver safe and best practice in the role of Health Visitor as defined in the NMC Standards of Proficiency for Specialist Community Public Health Nurses (NMC 2004), the Report from the Education Sub Group of the Children, Young People and Families National Advisory Group (CYPFNAG 2014) and key legislation from the Children and Young People (Scotland) Act 2014 (Scottish Government 2014). 

The key duties identified within current legislation are to promote, support and safeguard children’s wellbeing (Scottish Government 2014). 

Thus, the course focuses on the following three key themes: 

  1. A focus on wellbeing
  2. Assessing and Analysing Children’s Needs including the impact of children’s experiences on their wellbeing
  3. Improving Outcomes for Children and their Families

Introduction

There is an increasing need for health professionals to be directly or indirectly involved with a range of research, evaluation, clinical audit and quality improvement activities as part of their practice. Current policy and practice developments are also placing greater emphasis on the Clinical Academic Career pathway and there are now many health professionals with a clinical/practice and research focus to their roles. These developments point to the need for rigorous, high-quality interdisciplinary and flexible research programmes to prepare health professionals for these challenging and rewarding roles.
The MRes Health Research provides this. There is a strong emphasis placed on the application of knowledge and skills. The course can be taken as an advanced qualification in its own right or as excellent preparation for doctoral level study. Students can choose to study for a postgraduate Certificate, Diploma or Master's degree. Stand-alone modules are also available for those interested in Continuing Professional Development.
The course has been designed to suit students from a range of backgrounds. Most students (and graduates) have a health professional qualification e.g. nursing, midwifery, pharmacy, occupational therapy. Other students are from the social care or research sectors. Our students are from across the UK and overseas with most choosing to study remotely online as that offers flexibility around their work and family commitments.

The MRes Health Research develops skilled and knowledgeable multi-disciplinary health care researchers, able to understand and confidently use research techniques appropriate to their practice/subject area. Helping students to become conversant with approaches used by other social and healthcare researchers is also key as well as developing practical research skills, for example, in user involvement and the use of new technologies.
The course builds capacity and capability in individuals, and the healthcare workforce more generally, by promoting lifelong learning. It supports those who wish to access a range of research career pathways, and/or further research training by advancing knowledge, research and practice in different settings. There is a focus on both skills and experience concurrently and an emphasis on proactive team and network collaborations.

- Career opportunities
The MRes Health Research is designed for students who wish to pursue a variety of different careers in health where research is a core component and who wish to make a contribution to applied research in a range of contemporary health and social contexts. Most of our students are employed as health professionals whilst they study part-time with us. When they complete their studies most students will stay in their clinical speciality but use their enhanced research skills/knowledge in their roles e.g. by conducting their own research or service evaluations. Other students wish to use their Masters study as preparation for a PhD. Our students have been very successful in gaining recognition for their research work and for winning funding for PhD study.

The majority of our students are already working in health or social care prior to commencement and remain employed throughout the duration of their studies.
Our students develop a wide range of transferable skills during their study that make them attractive to other employers e.g. team working; IT skills; literature searching; critical appraisal; presentation skills; writing and data analysis. Delivery and assessment

Each module commences with a one day introductory session at the University. For international students, or those unable to attend the introductory session in person, there is the option to join in virtually, and we can set you up with our online system called Collaborate so you can take part in the session remotely. Learning then consists of 300 hours study over a 14-week period.
Apart from an introductory session, all teaching uses text and web-based distance-learning materials. The specially designed interactive website enables student interaction and tutorial support as well as providing online access to the course materials and much of the reading material required. Special emphasis is placed on a collaborative and problem-solving approach to learning and on encouraging reflective practice.
All modules are assessed through coursework and you experience a range of assessment including essays, evaluation reports, research proposals and literature reviews.
Students will require access to a computer with an internet connection; broadband or a link to a powerful LAN (such as in a college or University) is the preferred option, although dial-up with a minimum of a 56K modem will also work.

The health and social needs of the population are changing globally. An ageing population coupled with changing patterns of ill-health and use of health and social care services have strongly influenced the development of this Advancing Practice Programme. Working in partnership with clinical experts, patients, health and social care providers, it is designed for any health professional working in a clinical, education, management or research role who is keen to challenge their thinking, gain new skills and make a difference to their practice.

The Masters in Advanced Practice programme aims to assist nurses, allied health professionals and social care practitioners to develop their professional role, leadership skills and contribution to their own area of practice, whether clinical practice, management or education or practice development.

All students are encouraged to work innovatively and collaboratively across disciplines, in keeping with the ethos of improving the experience of shared care delivery for patients, families and carers in the 21st century. All the modules support the student’s engagement with and achievement of advanced skills and knowledge.

The MSc in Advanced Practice is a product of partnerships with university departments, research centres and external partners. This ensures a robust academic and practice based context is maintained throughout.

-Apply critical reasoning and argument skills to support evidence-based practice as part of health and social care delivery.
