Mental health nurses care for people suffering from various mental health conditions and their family and carers to offer help and support in dealing with the condition. Although it can be demanding and intense work, it can also be exceptionally rewarding.

Mental health nursing is a constantly evolving field, with as many as one in four people believed to experience some mental health condition each year. The Mental Health Nursing programme at LSBU is designed to equip you with the skills and competencies to meet the challenges of providing effective mental health care.

Throughout the course, you will gain practice experience in a wide range of in-patient and community settings, reflecting the diversity of mental health specialties. This could include acute psychiatry, child and adolescent mental health, forensic psychiatry, eating disorders, addictions and rehabilitation.

This course equips you with the skills to work in a diverse range of mental health nursing roles across a range of settings, including the NHS and the private health care sector.

You will be compassionate with lots of patience and the ability to remain calm under pressure, with reserves of mental stamina. Exceptional people skills, communicating clearly with people from different backgrounds is essential. The main resource mental health nurses have to draw upon is themselves and how they engage effectively with service.

You can choose to study Mental Health Nursing at our Southwark campus based in the heart of London or at our Havering campus in Harold Wood, Essex.

Modules

You will be taught separately from the three-year undergraduate students and will study the following:

Year 1:
- Applied biological and pharmacological sciences for nursing
This module introduces biological and pharmacological sciences and applies this to the chosen field of nursing.

- Frameworks and concepts for mental health nursing
This Module introduces mental health service provision. An exploration of the frameworks for care and underpinning philosophies will enable you to appreciate and develop your knowledge and skills in holistic and inclusive assessment and care planning across the service users' personal recovery journey.

- Public health and well-being
This module explores national and international health policies and examines the broader social, economic, environmental and political factors that impact health and well-being. It allows you to investigate issues that have an impact on the health of individuals and communities, recognising the importance of supportive social, physical and cultural environments to promote health and well-being. The experience of mental health, physical illness and learning disabilities will be explored within the context of children's and adults lives and the impact these may have on physical and mental well-being

Year 2:
- Best practice in mental health nursing
Practice to service development and change. It also aims to enable course members to make the transition from students to registered mental health nurses.

- Working with complex presentations
This module builds on Year 1 of the programme. Having established an in-depth knowledge of common mental health presentations, assessment, intervention and evaluation You are now required to consider more complex presentations. The focus will be on the student developing the required knowledge and skills to manage effectively the varied and sometimes conflicting demands which arise out of complex situations across the life span and differing services. The emphasis will be on effective assessment and management of risk, where a critical understanding will develop of the complexities inherent in service user need, service provision and the emerging process for decision-making.

- Politics and leadership
Exploration of the process of health care policy making and realising leadership potential. Studying this module should help you to appreciate not only what is involved in leadership, but also how each individual nurse can make a contribution to the leadership within their area of practice.

- Dissertation (optional)
This module provides you with the opportunity to undertake original enquiry in a chosen area of professional practice. Through the preparatory learning set you will be able to consolidate and extend your knowledge and understanding of research and evaluation design and associated methods of enquiry. You will be supported to develop the practical skills necessary to plan and carry out your chosen project. The preparatory learning set will address ethical and governance issues and processes relevant to your project.

Employability

This course will equip you with the skills to work in a diverse range of mental health nursing roles across a range of settings, including the NHS and the private health care sector. Successful completion of the course fulfils the requirements for graduates to be able to register with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) as a Registered Nurse - Mental Health. Recent graduates from this course have gone onto a range of nurse practitioner roles within mental health nursing.

Role and responsibilities

Day-to-day, the work broadly involves working in the community and hospitals taking on a variety of tasks – from giving patients medication, to assessing and supporting a patient's needs.

With experience, there are multiple opportunities for specialisation as your career progresses – such as: alcohol or substance misuse, forensic psychology, psychotherapeutic interventions or working with offenders.

Working hours and salary

Hours can be demanding for Mental Health nurses. Long shifts, unsocial hours and possibly being called to work at the last minute are all common. Salaries start around £21,000. However, with career progression and developed experience this can extend to well over £50,000. (Prospects)

As a graduate from this course, you will be able to apply for further study at postgraduate level. Placements

- Time spent on placement
During the course you will spend 50% of your time involved in academic study and 50% in clinical practice within a broad variety of healthcare settings. A clinical practice placement allows you to put theory into practice by working with a range of health professionals in clinical situations to develop the skills, knowledge and experience required to become a competent nurse. Although sometimes initially challenging, practice learning is one of the most interesting and exciting aspects of learning to be a nurse.

Clinical settings

At LSBU you will experience a variety of clinical settings such as NHS acute Trusts, community placements, independent sector and voluntary sector organisations.

Examples of current placement areas:

Structure of placements

Placements are spread over the two years:

Your first clinical placements are designed to introduce you to working in a professional setting and to develop essential care and basic assessment skills, infection control and learn about safeguarding vulnerable people.

You will then build on this experience and take on more responsibility, progressing your clinical reasoning skills and begin to look after small groups of patients making confident, proactive decisions for their health and management with less supervision.

You will also be able to choose a speciality (e.g. working with Clinical Nurse Specialists, specialist services or independent and 3rd sector providers), or a different context of care (e.g. prison, private health care facility, social care, charity, hospice etc.), or a lived experience of a certain condition (e.g. charity work, carer shadowing, etc.)

Supported by a mentor

Whilst in the clinical placement we ensure our nursing students receive continuous support and guidance from a dedicated mentor and practice learning teams made up of lecturers and practitioners.

Facilities

Counselling and Communication Suite:
Our counselling and communication suite is the ideal place for Mental Health students to role play realistic work-based scenarios. It contains two adjoining rooms with a one-way window and audio link, that allows students to practice one-to-one situations with 'clients' while they are monitored by teaching staff in the adjoining room.

This award winning programme gained the Innovations in Occupational Health Award in 2011. It is led by Anne Harriss who was named Occupational Health Nurse of the Year in 2011. Anne and a programme graduate then gained the 2013 Innovations in Occupational Health. In the same year Anne achieved Senior Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy. In 2016 Anne was awarded a Fellowship of the Royal College of Nursing, the highest award the College can bestow.

Occupational health (OH) nursing is a distinct specialty within the family of public health nursing. OH nurses practice in a wide diversity of settings within both the public and private sectors. In addition to gaining employment within the NHS, graduates of programmes offered by LSBU have gained employment with international airlines, the financial services sector, legal practices and manufacturing industries. Others have set up their own successful consultancies.

The course is approved by the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) and you spend 50% of the course in an OH practice setting. Shared learning with other practitioners who work in the OH setting is encouraged.

Should I take the BSc (Hons) or the PgDip qualification?
Depending on the level of your existing qualifications you will either undertake the BSc (Hons) course, or the PgDip qualification. If you qualified as a nurse with an Undergraduate Diploma you should take the BSc (Hons) Occupational Health Nursing (Specialist Community Public Health Nursing) programme. The content of the courses is the same.

Modules

The degree course consists of six modules each worth 20 credit points. Of these; one is a research module and is taught across a range of primary care programmes. The remaining five are OH pathway specific. Some modules are available on a standalone basis. This is subject to availability - priority for places on these units is given to those enrolling on the entire degree course.

The full-time course will be completed within one year of study.

Timetable

Full-time students attend for two days each week studying the Role of the occupational health practitioner and Assessing risk 1 modules on one day and Assessing risk 2 on the second day of attendance.

Part-time students attend for one day each week and join the full-time cohort studying the Role of the occupational health practitioner and Assessing risk 1. This programme recruits from a wide geographical area. Past students have travelled from as far afield as Manchester, Cornwall, Norfolk and Suffolk. In order to facilitate the travel needs of such students, the first lecture of the day is scheduled to commence at 10.00am and all lectures are completed by 5.00pm.

Teaching and learning

Each module equates to 200 hours of student effort, 36 hours of which take place in the classroom. This is supplemented with blended learning initiatives including electronic learning activities and workplace visits.

Teaching consists of formal lectures, seminars, group work and field work activities including a risk assessment activity which takes place in the Palm House of Kew Gardens.

A variety of assessment strategies are used including essays, case studies, reports, a professional practice portfolio and one examination.

Placements

It is a Nursing and Midwifery (NMC) requirement that you must gain experience in the OH practice setting throughout your studies. This can be achieved through employment in an OH service or as a result of a practice placement undertaken on an unpaid basis. In order that you gain a placement appropriate to your learning needs and personal circumstances. This experience is negotiated and secured by the student.

Prof Diana Kloss barrister, employment tribunal judge and Chair of the Council for Work and Health is also a frequent contributor to our programme. This programme focuses on public health nursing and prepares qualified nurses for registration on the Social Community Public Health Nursing (SCPHN) part of the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) register. Applicants will choose a defined area of practice either health visiting or school nursing. Both of these pathways promote the health of individuals, groups and populations and prevent ill health through taking a pro-active approach to practice.

Through partnership working, health visitors and school nurses seek to enable clients to take control of their lives whilst safeguarding vulnerable individuals and populations. Public health work that promotes social inclusion and reduces inequalities in health is central to practice. You will be encouraged to identify your learning needs in professional practice, in partnership with your practice teacher, and to develop competencies in areas that will enable you to meet the course learning outcomes. Children's nurses work in partnership with the child/young person, their parents and carers, involving them in the planning and delivery of their child's care and treatment. Children's nurses, in collaboration with other professionals, strive to promote health in children and young people to ensure they enter into adulthood in good health.

This innovative and intensive two-year course aimed at students with an existing degree (2:2 or above) will equip you with the knowledge and skills to assess and manage the nursing care needs of children and families, including those with acute and long-term conditions. The course will also develop your abilities to consider the wider aspects influencing children's health needs, preparing you for future leadership in a changing and challenging health care system.

Facilities

Children's skills laboratories
We have two Children's skills laboratories which are set up like nursing wards. The skills labs are used by all student nurses throughout their on-campus study time at LSBU. They learn manual handling of patients, basic life support skills and skills specific to the field of nursing.

SimMan
The nursing wards have simulator mannequins; SimMan, SimBaby and SimMom. These life-size mannequins are computer controlled and can be programmed with various clinical conditions. These are operated by a computer in real-time and so respond to a students' actions. They also allow students to see the outcome of specific interventions in certain scenarios, which could make the patient better or deteriorate quite quickly.

The mannequins are used to teach students how to recognise clinical signs, and to also associate those clinical signs with the actions they are taking to care for the patient. SimMan can be male or female with fully accurate anatomy and can breathe, blink, sweat, speak and groan in pain as well as have a pulse.

Professional links

Children's nurses work in a child-centred and multi-professional team, which is reflected in the variety of people who contribute to the course. Expert speakers include service users, such as parents and charitable organisations, expert practitioners and other lead professionals in child health and children's nursing.

Career progression

All graduates are offered the opportunity to apply for employment with the NHS Trusts and hospitals where they gained experience during training when posts are available. The course has an excellent record in graduate employment, including working overseas, and covering a range of qualified nurse positions.

Successful graduates of the PgDip can top-up to an MSc in one year and will be qualified to study a range of further specialist postgraduate pathways. With additional experience, advanced practice is available at masters level with the potential to progress to doctorate studies. Dissertation
Assessment methods vary within each module, mapped against the professional standards as outlined by the NMC (2010) and assessed either through course work, and/or clinical placement assessments. Written assessments include essays, case study's, and critical reviews of evidence for example. Clinical practice assessments include achievements of identified competencies, a learning assessment portfolio, and problem based scenarios.

Teaching and learning

You'll be expected to work as an independent adult learner, working alongside academic staff to expand and extend your knowledge, skills and attitudes as a critical scholar in the field of Intellectual Disabilities.

You'll be allocated a personal tutor, a cohort leader, and a course director, plus clinical mentors, and link lecturers whilst on placement.

The course makes use of the virtual learning environment MOODLE, an interactive based system for accurate and rapid information sharing, so course materials are available whenever you need them. A range of learning styles are employed, including visits from service users and their carers, to ensure the course remains contemporary and applied to real life situations.

Placements

Every student will spend 50% of the course on placement. You'll have the opportunity to work in partnership with individuals with learning disabilities and their families using a health mentoring model. Alternatively you can work in partnership with community based organisations on projects where all parties increase their awareness, understanding and valuing of their roles, using strength based approaches.

The placement aim is to provide a broad range of experiences working with children and adults with learning disabilities in a variety of settings. This will enhance your knowledge and experience of the range of challenges people with a learning disability may face on a daily basis and what can be done to assist not only the individual but also their families.

You'll also gain insight into what is available to support workers and organisations providing services in the areas of physical and mental health, complex care needs, communication, behaviours of concern, sexuality, personal care and a range of other areas.

Learning disability nursing as a career

The course will enable you to develop a wide range of employability skills through the emphasis on a vocational approach to teaching which leads to a professional qualification leading to registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC).

There is an increasing body of research that shows the need for learning disability nurses as a specialist resource to address health inequalities experienced by people with learning disabilities. The course will give you the specialist knowledge and skills to work in a wide range of services, and the confidence to work collaboratively with people with learning disabilities, their families and carers, and other professionals and agencies.

Role and responsibilities

As a learning disabilities nurse you would work with people of all ages to give them the skills and confidence they need to live as independently as possible. You'd be working as part of a multi-disciplinary team and be responsible for co-ordinating care plans with other healthcare professionals, as well as monitoring progress. A learning disabilities nurse would be responsible for making an initial assessment of a patient's health and social care needs.

Day-to-day duties would be likely to include help and encouragement with tasks such as personal hygiene, dressing, using public transport, shopping, leisure interests, making and attending appointments, and finding a job. Learning disabilities nursing also involves campaigning on behalf of those with learning disabilities, supporting the agenda for equality and trying to improve healthcare services for those with learning difficulties.

Placements

Although sometimes challenging, practice learning is one of the most interesting and exciting aspects of learning to be a nurse.

At LSBU, you will experience a variety of clinical settings such as NHS acute Trusts, community placements, independent sector and voluntary sector organisations. If you are based at our Southwark campus you are able to experience placements at Guy's Hospital, St Thomas' Hospital, University College London Hospital, Newham University Hospital and Whipps Cross University Hospital. You will also undertake a placement in the community. If you are based at our Havering campus you are able to experience placements at Newham University Hospital, Whipps Cross University Hospital, King George Hospital and Queen's Hospital; along with a placement within the community.

Placements are spread over the two years:

Your first clinical placements are designed to introduce you to working in a professional setting and to develop essential care and basic assessment skills, infection control and learn about safeguarding vulnerable people.

You will then begin to take on more responsibility, progressing your clinical reasoning skills and begin to look small groups of patients making confident, proactive decision for their health management with little supervision.

Whilst in the clinical placement we ensure you receive continuous support and guidance from a dedicated mentor and practice learning teams made up of lecturers and practitioners.

Facilities

Adult Nursing skills laboratories
We have two adult nursing skills laboratories at our Southwark campus and three at our Havering campus. Our nursing skills labs; set up like hospital wards are used by all student nurses and midwives throughout their courses. They learn manual handling and basic life support skills and skills that are specific to their field of nursing or midwifery.

SimMan
The nursing wards have simulator mannequins: SimMan, SimBaby and SimMom. These life-size mannequins are computer controlled and can be programmed with various clinical conditions. These are operated by a computer in real-time and so respond to a student's actions. They also allow students to see the outcome of specific interventions in certain scenarios, which could make the patient better or deteriorate quite quickly.

The mannequins are used to teach students how to recognise clinical signs, and to also associate those clinical signs with the actions they are taking to care for the patient. SimMan can be male or converted to female with fully accurate anatomy and can breathe, blink, sweat, speak and groan in pain as well as have a pulse.

The Faculty of Health and Social Care currently has around 30 full and part-time MPhil/PhD students, for whom there are monthly seminars, support groups and an annual Summer School at which students are expected to present their work. There is an equipped MPhil/PhD area within our Faculty and our students are actively encouraged to attend a rolling programme of research methods courses.

Most graduates are self-funded but there are faculty scholarships and the Faculty has attracted grants through sources such as the Department of Health, ESRC and Health Trusts.

It is usual to register for an MPhil in the first instance. Graduates will then be asked to submit a transfer month report of their research progress for University scrutiny. The Faculty encourages team supervision and every student has at least two supervisors.

Besides the doctoral programme, research in the Faculty supports programmes of research in: Allied Health Professions (Occupational Therapy, Operating Department Practice, Physiotherapy and Radiography), Clinical Effectiveness, Community Development and Social Work, Community and User Involvement in Service Delivery and Research, Health Promotion, Health Services Research, Inter-

Professional Doctorates

The Faculty of Health and Social Care provides two professional doctorate programmes. One is the professional doctorate programme in nursing, leading to the award of Doctorate in Nursing. The other is the professional doctorate programme for allied health professions leading to profession specific awards of Doctorate in Occupational Therapy, Doctorate in Optometry, Doctorate in Physiotherapy, or Doctorate in Radiography. Currently 19 students are undertaking study for these qualifications which are studied over five years.

Professional doctorate programmes differ from the traditional MPhil/PhD route (described above) in that there is a taught component which is delivered in the first two years. This is followed by a research component in years three to five. In the research component, students carry out a profession specific research study, with the support of a supervisory team, and produce a research thesis.

This graduate entry programme is designed to enable students to develop the required competences, skills and standards of proficiency to be eligible for registration with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) as an Occupational Therapist with either the PgDip Occupational Therapy or the MSc Occupational Therapy. The award received depends on the modules passed.

The accelerated format allows the full-time professional training to be condensed into two years, rather than the traditional three-year route. Key features are the use of problem-based (PBL) and inquiry-based learning approaches. These educational approaches involve students working together in small groups and sharing responsibility for meeting module learning outcomes. The course therefore requires students to draw on a range of self-management skills and this experience acts as good preparation for entering the evolving world of health and social care as a qualified member of the workforce.

Occupational Therapy at LSBU has a dedicated team of tutors who utilise their wealth of knowledge, skills and clinical experiences of working in health and social care to inform the teaching programme. The team has a strong commitment to engaging with clinicians and service users in the teaching programme.

To support the teaching programme, the School of Health and Social Care has a dedicated suite of clinical skills labs, including two well-equipped Activities of Daily Living (ADL) suites plus large rooms for art, splinting and group skills sessions.

School of Health and Social Care Dissertation (MSc pathway only)

All modules are assessed by a mix of written assignments, case studies, critical review, presentations, examinations, practice placements and a dissertation (MSc students only).

Timetable

Attendance is normally three to four days per week with the remaining time being used for self-directed study. There is often preparatory work for problem based learning groups as well as other teaching sessions. Whilst on placements students are full-time following the working hours of the setting.

Teaching and learning

The course uses a range of teaching and learning methods including lectures, small group sessions, practical skills sessions, online and self-directed learning activities.

Placements

During the course you are required to successfully complete and pass over 1000 practice placement hours within a broad variety of health and social care settings; meeting the College of Occupational Therapists (2008), the World Federation of Occupational Therapists (WFOT, 2002) and the Health and Social Care Professions standards and requirements.

At LSBU, we work closely with a number of healthcare organisations to provide a wide range of suitable practice placements. You will therefore gain experience of working with:

• People of different ages, diverse backgrounds and life situations
• Acute and long standing health needs (including physical, mental health and learning disability)
• Services in a range of settings (hospital and community, urban and rural).

Structure of placement learning:

Practice placements are in four blocks and are developmental in nature as you progress through the course. Placements are full time following the working hours of the setting. Student work under the guidance and supervision of a state registered occupational therapist (practice educator).

Placement settings:

Placements will predominantly be within the Greater London area in the NHS, local authority, voluntary, social enterprise, charities and private sectors. Placements can be in established or emerging services. Applicants should be aware that they may need to cover travel costs and placements could require them to commute across London and beyond if necessary.

We maintain very strong links with occupational therapists working in health and social care settings across the NHS London area. These expert clinicians contribute to the course design, delivery of teaching sessions and provision of practice placements.

The course is approved by the Health and Care Professions Council; the regulator of Health, Psychological and Social professionals.

The course is accredited by the College of Occupational Therapists; the professional association for occupational therapists.

The course is recognised by the World Federation of Occupational Therapists

Career opportunities;
The National Health Service is promoting a secondary to primary care shift with more services being provided within a broader range of primary care settings. Working within primary care requires a different set of skills and knowledge to those learned in secondary care. The Primary Care Scheme has been designed to facilitate participants to design programmes of study that are pertinent to their needs and those of the service, recognising that this is a rapidly changing service environment. The course is characterised by an emphasis on practical skills informed by theoretical insights and managerial understanding. Students from over 150 countries have attended the course and come to the programme with existing experience of the health service and or hospital management.

This course has been designed to enable health and social care professionals to enhance care provided to patients and families facing physical, psychosocial and spiritual issues associated with life-limiting illness.

It is based on the core competencies in palliative care identified by the European Association for Palliative Care. It is also congruent with core competences and principles for health and social care professionals working with adults at the end of life and aligns with DH and HEE priorities for workforce development in palliative and end of life care. It reflects the multi-professional nature of palliative care and health and social care professionals are given the opportunity to learn together; therefore, student learning is facilitated by a multi-professional teaching team using a Blended Learning Approach with a particular emphasis on linking theory to practice.

The course offers flexibility where students can choose to undertake the course on full time or part time basis. In addition, the course offers a choice of module from the CPPD portfolio to suits student’s personal and professional needs. Please see the website for more information:

Assessment

The course utilises a variety of assessment strategies that have been designed to reflect the interdisciplinary nature of palliative care practice and to respond to the learning needs of students from different clinical backgrounds; in addition, ensuring that all the learning outcomes are met.

The postgraduate certificate in Palliative and End of Life Care comprises a range of assessment methods including; problem based case-scenario multiple choice question exam, case study assignment and oral presentation.

The postgraduate diploma in Palliative and End of Life Care comprises a research methods module, which is assessed by a research critique, enabling students to develop practical skills for identifying, critically reviewing and synthesising research evidence relevant to palliative care practice.

The MSc Palliative and End of Life Care comprises of a dissertation module, enabling students to consolidate and extend their understanding of research and evaluation design or of systematic literature review.

Teaching and learning

A Blended Learning Approach approach is used, meaning student learning is facilitated through a combination of face to face teaching and delivery of content via digital and online media. It allows for a greater variety and flexibility than a traditional classroom set up and responds to the learning needs of modern learners. For example, a classroom lecture may be accompanied by online discussion forums or other online activities where students have the opportunity to interact and share experiences and knowledge with some element of student control over time, place and space.

Students will be supported to develop their academic skills and be able to work at level 7. This will be facilitated through tutorials, workshops and feedback from formative assessments. Skills for learning team will provide a workshop at the beginning of each semester on critical thinking, academic writing and use of grammar. Students can access additional support through the student centre as needed. The module leader and teaching team will provide tutorials on assessments and review draft work of students as needed. Assessment feedback will also provide guidance that will assist further academic development.

Each student will be assigned a named academic contact as a personal tutor who will be selected from the course team. The personal tutors will provide academic guidance and pastoral support across the programme of study and review wider academic progress. Formal meeting will be scheduled once every academic year to facilitate progress, review and provide academic feedback. Additional meetings can be arranged as required.
