Northampton is a large town in the East Midlands of England, around 60 miles north-west of London. It has a proud manufacturing tradition and sporting heritage, with several historic buildings dotted around the centre. The University of Northampton is based in the town and is one of the youngest public universities in the UK.
Northampton received its charter in 1189, becoming an important medieval town. The Holy Sepulchre, a distinctive Norman church, dates from this era and is one of only a few ‘round’ churches in the UK. A university was established in Northampton in the 13th century – the third university in England, after Oxford and Cambridge – although a dispute with Henry III led to the institution being dissolved.
The shoe industry has been an important part of Northampton for centuries: the town manufactured thousands of shoes during the English Civil War and nowadays the Northampton Museum and Art Gallery is home to the largest collection of shoes in the world. The iconic Dr. Martens shoes were also born in the nearby Northamptonshire village of Wollaston.
Northampton’s vibrant Cultural Quarter offers plenty for students to enjoy, including NN Contemporary Art and the Errol Flynn Filmhouse. World-famous graphic novel writer Alan Moore was born in Northampton and still lives in the area. St Giles Street was also voted Britain’s best high street in 2015.
Sport is a big part of Northampton life and the town boasts a Premiership rugby union team in Northampton Saints. Northampton Town Football Club ply their trade in League 2, the fourth tier of English football. Silverstone, the home of the British Grand Prix, is around 15 miles south-east of Northampton.
The University of Northampton offers a range of student accommodation on campus and elsewhere in the town, while the private rental sector is also an option.
The University of Northampton received full university status in 2005, although its roots date back to Northampton Technical College, established in 1924. In September 2018, the University of Northampton relocated to the £330m Waterside campus, just south of the town centre. There’s a wide range of postgraduate courses on offer at the University of Northampton, including an MBA.
Shoes no longer dominate the Northampton economy (although the only British Dr. Martens factory is still based in the area). The financial services sector is a major presence in Northampton, which is also a popular commuter town for London – only an hour away by train.
