Ningbo is a large city in the east of China, lying south of Shanghai across the Hangzhou Bay. An important port city – one of the busiest container ports in the world, in fact – Ningbo also has a long academic tradition as the home of China’s oldest library. There are several universities and higher education institutions in Ningbo, including the University of Nottingham Ningbo China.
Ningbo is a modern, vibrant city with a history that stretches back centuries. It’s always been a significant commercial port and was a key trading post on the Silk Road 2,000 years ago. In 1842, Ningbo was opened to foreign trade under the Treaty of Nanjing, sparking the construction of the Old Bund – a district showcasing European architecture from the 19th century. Nowadays, the Old Bund (also known as Laowaitan) is an attractive waterfront area with plenty of bars, restaurants and other opportunities for entertainment.
There is a thriving cultural scene in Ningbo: the Ningbo Museum, the Ningbo Museum of Art and the Hongjia Art Gallery all offer a variety of exhibitions, while the Yifu Theatre showcases traditional Chinese opera. The Tianyi Pavilion Library, founded in 1561, is the oldest library in China (and among the oldest in the world). Its scenic gardens provide a respite from the hustle and bustle of city life.
Ningbo is connected to Jiaxing, one of Shanghai’s satellite cities, by the 36km-long Hangzhou Bay Bridge. Shanghai itself can be reached in around two and a half hours by high speed train.
Ningbo is home to several universities, including Zhejiang Wanli University and the University of Nottingham Ningbo China (UNNC). Established in 2004 as the first foreign university in China, UNNC is a joint venture between the University of Nottingham and the Zhejiang Wanli Education Group. Around 8,000 students are enrolled on its courses across Business, Science, Engineering, Humanities and Social Sciences.
Ningbo-Zhousan Port is one of the busiest in the world, processing more than 20 million container units in 2016. This port ensures that Ningbo plays a significant role in China’s ongoing economic development. Petrochemicals, telecoms and IT are among the important industrial sectors in Ningbo’s economy.
