Nicosia (known in Greek as Lefkosia) is the capital of Cyprus. An important financial centre in the Mediterranean, Nicosia is home to eight universities, the largest of which is the University of Cyprus.

What’s it like to study a Masters in Nicosia?

Nicosia has been continuously inhabited since 3000 BC and its rich heritage can be seen everywhere. At various points in its history Cyprus has been under the control of the Byzantine, Ottoman and British empires, as well as the Venetians, and the diverse architecture of Nicosia reflects this history. You’ll find ancient Byzantine gates, Venetian fortifications and Ottoman mosques all around the city.

Nowadays, Nicosia holds the unwelcome distinction of being Europe’s only divided capital city, split between the Republic of Cyprus in the south and the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus. There is a demilitarised buffer zone between the two states that runs through Nicosia, patrolled by the United Nations. Despite this unusual political situation, Nicosia is a safe place to visit – both the north and the south of the city – although the buffer zone (the ‘Green Line’) is strictly off limits to the public.

Masters students in Nicosia will find a bustling city with a wealth of architectural and archaeological treasures. Several museums chart the island’s history, including the Cyprus Museum, the Leventis Municipal Museum of Nicosia and the Byzantine Museum.

Universities in Nicosia

The University of Cyprus, another public research university, is also based in Nicosia and offers a selection of English Masters.

Other higher education institutions include the Cyprus Institute of Neurology and Genetics, Frederick University and the Cyprus International Institute of Management.

Depending on which side of Nicosia you’re studying in, the primary language of instruction will be Greek or Turkish, although English Masters are available at most universities.
