Our Mental Health Nursing course provides students with an opportunity to gain an Integrated MNurs/Registered Nurse qualification and acts as preparation both for registration as a nurse with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) and for taking on the responsibilities and accountability involved. It aims to provide graduates holding a health-related degree the opportunity to study at Level 7 – the theory that underpins nursing practice and develops knowledge and skills through evidence-based learning. Practice experience is gained in both hospital and community settings. On successful completion of this course students will be able to enter Part one (Mental Health) of the Register held by the NMC.

Our Mental Health Nursing course will prepare students to meet the needs of individuals in a variety of settings across a range of organisations. Students will be equipped with the fundamental skills and knowledge to meet the holistic needs of the client. The course will ensure that students appreciate the impact of mental health/emotional issues on the wellbeing of the individual, family or significant other.

Students will demonstrate and understand the need for the application of care, values and principles of mental health practice such as compassion, dignity, autonomy, personhood and empowerment. Students will develop the ability to critically analyse the evidence-base of mental health nursing practice and appreciate the value of practiced-based evidence through reflection on care.

Course structure

The framework for the MNurs Award has been specifically designed to permit Accreditation of Prior Learning (APL) and Accreditation of Prior Experiential Learning (APEL) as described by the NMC with a view to preparing students who are already graduates and/or who have relevant clinical experience for registration. APL / APEL will involve students making a written submission to detail how the requirements of the course have been met through prior study as well as providing evidence of relevant practice experience in a health care support worker role.

The Mental Health Nursing course involves continuous assessment of both theory and practice. A variety of assessment methods are used including practical examinations, case studies, essays, written examinations and presentations. Students are also assessed against the NMC’s competencies for registration during a series of practice placements in hospital and the community.

The MNurs course prepares successful students for a career as a registered nurse in the relevant field of practice. Newly qualified nurses can apply for posts within a hospital or community setting. The MNurs course may also enable individuals to develop a clinical research career within the NHS.

In line with the principles and values which underpin the NHS constitution, the University expects all students undertaking programmes which lead to registration as a health professional to demonstrate the NHS values.

98% of students go on to work or further study within six months of graduation (Unistats, 2014).

The Child Nursing course will prepare students to be safe, effective and caring practitioners who are ready to work with children, young people and their families with a variety of care needs in a range of settings from home to hospital. The MSc Nursing course will allow you to examine contemporary nursing issues from a clinical perspective. Available to nurses who hold a registration in the UK or another country, this course offers an exciting mix of theory and practical application through the use of enquiry-based learning and workshops where a range of table top exercises and simulation will be utilised to develop your practical skills and knowledge.

Occupational Therapists are skilled professionals who work in a range of health and social care settings to assist people to carry out activities that they want or need to do, but are prevented from doing, by circumstances such as ill-health, disability or ageing. This two-year, full time Occupational Therapy course is designed to develop the knowledge, skills and professional behaviours required to be a safe and effective Occupational Therapist in a range of contemporary health and social care settings.

The pre-registration Masters degree has been designed to meet the needs of graduates with a first degree in a subject related to the discipline of Occupational Therapy (for example Psychology, Health Studies or similar). Using principles of enquiry based learning, the course is structured to encourage students to build on existing knowledge which will help to understand human function and dysfunction, to develop a range of practical and decision-making skills in relation to assessing need and delivering interventions for a range of individuals, and to understand contemporary influences affecting health and social care services. In addition, a research strand is delivered across both years of the course which assists to consolidate knowledge and skills in relation to the consumption of research, and builds towards the completion of an independent research project. The course also demonstrates a commitment to inter-professional working and provides a range of opportunities to learn with and from students enrolled on other professional courses.

Practice placements are included in both years of the course and provide opportunities to develop knowledge and skills in a range of practice settings. There are four periods of practice placement, ranging from four weeks to nine weeks. All are organised for students through the University Placements Office, apart from one elective placement, where students have a choice regarding the location and speciality, with opportunities for overseas placements.

The course utilises principles of enquiry based learning, in which students are signposted to areas of enquiry relevant to the level of learning and work in both groups and individually, to identify deficits in knowledge and the ways in which their learning can be facilitated. University sessions are used to introduce concepts, consolidate knowledge and to facilitate student learning in relation to the application of theoretical knowledge to occupational therapy practice.

Successful completion of the course will enable graduates to apply for registration with the Health and Care Professions Council, in order to gain state registration to practice as an Occupational Therapist. Employment prospects are good with opportunities in traditional areas of practice such as acute hospitals, community health services, and social care, alongside emerging opportunities in non-traditional areas such as schools, employment services, and the voluntary sector. The skills acquired on the course will equip students to work in a number of diverse practice areas and could also lead to careers in research, education or case management. The Master of Clinical Practice reflects a unique focus on mastery of clinical (health care practice) theory and skills, and unlike other postgraduate courses it requires an assessment of clinical competence on which the award is contingent. As a result, the breadth of knowledge introduced will be limited when compared to existing MSc or MA courses within postgraduate studies, and focused instead on knowledge that is imperative for clinical practice. For these reasons this links postgraduate study to clinical work.

The course addresses the requirement to provide a Masters award that includes new clinical skills to prepare for a role as a new type of health professional. A substantial part of the course is devoted to the development of specific skills and the remainder accommodates the acquisition of a bio-medical and practice related knowledge base required for the role. For this reason, research and other forms of evidence are integrated within the practitioner specific modules and within clinical practice.

The duration of the Master of Clinical Practice is three years. The Postgraduate Diploma will be full-time over two years. The final (dissertation) year will be undertaken on a part-time basis. The changing nature of healthcare provision has created new roles within critical care units. These developments are in response to variations in recruitment and retention patterns for medical staff, and the impact of the European Working Time Directive. The Advanced Practitioner role is a new non-medical role in critical care. The role is designed to make significant contribution to the care and management of critically ill patients and their families.

Our Midwifery Studies Postgraduate Diploma is designed for applicants who are registered as a nurse level 1 (adult) with the NMC. Successful applicants will normally have a degree with honours and relevant nursing experience.

The content of the Midwifery Studies Postgraduate Diploma programme will meet the requirements of the NMC Standards for Pre Registration Midwifery Education and reflects the concepts and intentions of ‘Delivering High Quality Midwifery care: the priorities, opportunities and challenges for midwives’ (GB DH 2009). Thus the course will address key issues such as the provision of women-centred care, maintaining normality in childbirth, the development of essential skills for midwives and the role of the midwife in the promotion of public health.

Postgraduate research supervision is available in applied epidemiology, decision making and organisation of care, life-course, development and ageing, and public health improvement.

Research in the Institute of Health and Society (IHS) is organised into four themes and underpinned by four discipline groups. As a research student, you will be fully integrated in a theme or group. You will have a team of supervisors, including clinicians or policy makers from a range of health and social care settings. Current research interests, projects and publications are available from our staff profiles.

Delivery

Attendance on campus is flexible, agreed between you and your supervisors depending on the requirements of your research project. You are expected to undertake 40 hours of work per week with an annual holiday entitlement of 35 days, which includes statutory and bank holidays.

You will receive formal, high quality subject-specific and generic skills training with modules including:
-Quantitative and qualitative methods
-Health and health care policy
-Health economics
-Health care quality

We have a thriving postgraduate community with friendly and supportive relations between students and staff. Although formal supervision takes place once a month, you will be encouraged to present your studies to your research theme and to the wider Institute.

Our Athena SWAN (Scientific Women's Academic Network) silver award was renewed in 2014. This recognises good employment practice and the promotion of women working in science, engineering and technology.

Facilities

We have a variety of learning and study spaces in the Baddiley-Clark Building and the Medical School. You will have access to video conference facilities and a dedicated audio-visual room for analysing both audio and video information.

You choose to be based with your research theme or in our Postgraduate Student Room, with computers and printers. You have access to an extensive range of specialist software.

We also host the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) Research Design Service North East.

Our Cancer MRes is a research-based course with a taught component that is equivalent to an MSc. It provides a springboard into a career that involves a working knowledge of scientific research.

The course is designed for graduates with a BSc in the life sciences or other science disciplines, and for intercalating and fully qualified MBBS or BDS students. It can be taken either as a stand-alone qualification or as an entry route onto a PhD or MD.

The taught component of the course includes subject-specific content in the area of cancer research. You have the flexibility to develop your own bespoke course by selecting additional, complementary modules. You will also receive itraining in general research principles, and other professional and key skills. Subject-based modules cover:
-Clinical and pathological aspects of cancer
-Molecular mechanisms that establish and promote cancer
-Current treatments and how research translates into novel treatments

Your research project comprises the major element of the course. This project will involve 24 weeks of research in an area of cancer research under the supervision of an expert academic researcher in the field. Projects are undertaken in laboratories actively engaged in cancer research. Examples are:
-Roles of tumour suppressor genes
-Bio-molecular basis of hormone-dependent cancers
-Evaluation of novel bio-drugs
