What’s it like to study a Masters in Palmerston North?
Palmerston was first settled by Europeans in 1866 and is named after an English prime minister. In 1871, ‘North’ was added to the name to avoid confusion with another Palmerston on New Zealand’s South Island, in the region of Otago. When the west coast railway from Wellington arrived in 1886, Palmerston North began to develop into a bustling agricultural town. In 1927, its population had grown to 20,000 people and Palmerston North was recognised as a city.

Te Manawa explores natural history, art, Maori objects and science through a number of interactive exhibits. The New Zealand Rugby Museum is in the Te Manawa complex, the first public museum in the world to focus on rugby. The institution houses many artefacts, exhibits and pieces of memorabilia related to the history of the sport, from the oldest rugby ball and All Black jersey to interactive scrum machines.
Established in 1954, Tararua Forest Park was New Zealand’s first park of its kind and can be reached by car in around 90 minutes from Palmerston North. Its natural beauty means that it’s a popular area for ‘tramping’ – the New Zealand term for hiking.
Thanks to 40% of its population being students, Palmerston North has a vibrant atmosphere. There are around 3,000 international students in the city, contributing towards its diversity.
