Programme structure

This 60 point, taught programme has a flexible structure, so you can tailor your learning to suit your interests – either by selecting courses within the general areas of engineering, or refining your study to a specific field of expertise. This will not affect the outcome of your final award – you will still graduate with a PGCertEng.

You must complete four 15 point, non-project courses listed in the Master of Engineering Studies schedule. Two courses (30 points) must be from the subjects below:

As a Master of Engineering (ME) graduate you will have the opportunity to either seek employment as a professional engineer, or start a research career.

The ME normally takes 12 months to complete full-time.  It builds on prior study at undergraduate level, such as the four-year BE(Hons) or BSc(Tech).  The degree requires 120 points, which can either be made up of 30 points in taught papers and a 90-point dissertation (research project), or one 120-point thesis.

If you enrol in an ME via the Faculty of Science & Engineering you can major in Engineering, and your thesis topic may come from our wide range of study areas such as biological engineering, chemical engineering, civil engineering, mechanical engineering, materials engineering, environmental engineering and electronic engineering.

The Faculty of Science & Engineering fosters collaborative relationships between science, engineering, industry and management.  The Faculty has developed a very strong research base to support its aims of providing you with in-depth knowledge, analytical skills, innovative ideas, and techniques to translate science into technology in the real world.

You will have the opportunity to undertake research with staff who are leaders in their field and will have the use of world-class laboratory facilities. Past ME students have worked on projects such as a ‘snake robot’ for disaster rescue and a brain-controlled electro-mechanical prosthetic hand.

The University of Waikato School of Engineering’s specialised laboratories includes the Large Scale Lab complex that features a suite of workshops and laboratories dedicated to engineering teaching and research.  These include 3D printing, a mechanical workshop and computer labs with engineering design software.

The Master of Engineering Studies (Electronics and Computer Engineering) is a high-quality programme combining taught and research courses at a postgraduate level. It is a 120 credit qualification able to be completed in one year full-time. 

If you are already working, or your research experience is limited, this qualification will give you the learning you need to take your career to the next level or pursue more in-depth postgraduate research. 

This qualification will help you become an excellent electronic and computer engineer. The ME is a one-year full-time programme but you can study it part time. You can choose to complete it by doing a 120-point thesis or by doing a 90-point thesis and 30 points of coursework.

Duration and workload

Victoria University’s Master of Engineering Practice (MEP) is a unique and innovative programme for graduates seeking a professional postgraduate engineering qualification in the IT field.

There is a demand from New Zealand employers for ICT graduates, particularly for graduates who have the appropriate skills for working eff ectively in the New Zealand workplace.

Industry has made it clear that they need graduates with good communication and teamwork skills and an understanding of the professional environment in industry, as well as straight technical knowledge and skills.

About the Master of Engineering Practice Programme

Many Engineering and Computer Science graduates have little experience at applying theoretical knowledge to real engineering problems and little understanding of the professional environment in the New Zealand industry.

Students will have completed a relevant degree such as in Computer Science or an appropriate engineering discipline. The programme will include courses focusing on communication, problem solving and enterprise skills. It will end with a three-month research and development project in an industry placement.

  • Unique in NZ. Designed to prepare students for work in the ICT industry

Rapid growth in the global medical devices industry demands an innovative fusion of biomedical, materials sciences, manufacturing, and engineering knowledge - and the University of Auckland is responding to the challenge.

This programme is aimed primarily at engineers and health professionals to provide them with the necessary broad range of knowledge in the various technologies underpinning medical devices.

Programme overview

The programme is funded by the Tertiary Education Commission of New Zealand, and is a collaboration between the Faculty of Engineering, Faculty of Medical and Health Sciences at the University of Auckland and the Medical Technology Association of New Zealand.

The programme is normally two semesters and will accommodate part-time enrolments. To best meet the needs of participants with different backgrounds, including those coming from industry, the programme is provided as both a research masters and a taught masters. 

All students complete two core courses that give an overview of technology and practices related to medical devices.

Students have a choice of completing a 90-point research portfolio or a smaller 60-point research project. In both cases the research is a significant component of the study programme and will involve working with a research group or being seconded to industry for a supervised research project that provides specialisation in a particular aspect of medical device technology. For participants without a medical background, a clinical secondment will be used to strengthen the experiential component of their learning.

Participants enrolled in the 90-point research portfolio will prepare a written thesis, while participants enrolled in the 60-point project will prepare a written project report. Both are examined following the standard the University of Auckland processes.

The taught masters option provides a wide variety of courses that participants can draw upon to best address their own areas of interest. Courses are lecture-based and delivered as modules, each taught by the University’s research specialists ensuring participants meet the multidisciplinary requirements of medical devices technology.

Employment opportunities

Graduates of the programme will be equipped with the technical, medical, ethical, regulatory and business knowledge required for innovation in medical devices and technologies, filling the large demand for these skills in the global and domestic medical devices industry.

In the energy management major of the Master of Engineering Studies, you will gain an detailed understanding of energy efficiency, looking at detail of energy use in industry and commercial settings, as well as tools for energy systems analysis and efficient building design.

A unique qualification

It is a unique postgraduate programme in New Zealand. Taught in conjunction with world-renowned Murdoch University in Australia, it is the only fully-focussed energy management postgraduate programme in New Zealand. The programme has been running for over fifteen years.

Real-world learning

You will gain an in-depth understanding of the theory of renewable energy systems, but also focus on practical information that can be applied to real-world situations. This could be through using the international Long Range Energy Alternatives Planning System (LEAP) model to assess climate change mitigation options for a country, city or community. The Master of Engineering Studies (Life Cycle Management) is a unique postgraduate programme in New Zealand. 

This qualification is suitable if you either have an undergraduate degree and wish to specialise in environmental footprinting and life cycle management, or you have found yourself working in a related role and need to upskill. You do not have to have an engineering degree to enrol.

What is life cycle management?

Life cycle management is about improving the environmental profile of a product from extraction of raw materials through manufacture, distribution, use and on to waste management.

Critical thinking and skills

Let our experts help you develop your own expertise. You will learn the theory and practice behind life cycle management and environmental footprinting from lecturers who have been working internationally, contributing to research and the development of life cycle management standards.

When you have completed this programme you will be able to undertake life cycle assessment and related environmental footprinting studies.

You will learn how to critically evaluate the LCA system modeling options available for a decision situation and evaluate the role of alternative life cycle based approaches in environmental management.

Real-world learning

You will gain an in-depth understanding of the theory of life cycle management and environmental footprinting - but also focus on practical information that can be applied to real-world situations. 

You are encouraged to apply the skills developed during the programme in real-life situations during exercises and assignments.

Flexibility

You can study towards the Master of Engineering Studies on campus, or study via our distance learning. This gives you the flexibility to remain in full-time employment while studying. Massey University has been offering distance education for over 50 years and you will be able to take advantage of our well-developed systems for teaching and learning.

The Master of Engineering Studies will provide students with a high-quality education in engineering within the New Zealand context, with a particular emphasis on the application of that knowledge to real-world industrial problems. A capstone project will allow students to demonstrate their understanding of the topics covered and its application in an industrial research setting, while the presentation of this project will enable them to demonstrate research expertise.

The programme is aimed at students wishing to gain experience in engineering practice before moving into the workforce, students who already have industrial experience and who wish to further develop their theoretical knowledge, and students who wish to develop further knowledge in a specialised area of engineering without a background in that area.

You should consider this degree if these are the kind of qualities you are looking for:

  • a thorough knowledge of the fundamental principles of engineering and an advanced ability to apply them to new complex, real-world industrial engineering problems.
  • a systems approach to the design, development, and management of engineering systems, and the ability to work in a team environment to solve problems at a variety of conceptual levels.
  • the knowledge and ability to become project leader or system designer in companies of any size.
  • the ability to learn independently and to identify when your knowledge of a problem is lacking, and potential places where such information can be gained.
