Take your career to the next level

Gain in-depth specialist business skills that will help give you the skills to move up the hierarchy in your career.

In Massey University’s Master of Business Studies you will combine study of advanced theory with research in a specialised field of business to give you a career advantage.

A Master of Business Studies will give you the skills you need to progress your career, or continue to further study.

Learn from leading business experts

The Massey Business School is one of the country’s leading and largest business schools - it is ranked among the top two per cent of business schools globally and is AACSB accredited.

Massey University’s business and management studies rank in the top 250 (by QS (Quacquarelli Symonds) rankings). We are also ranked in the top 150 universities worldwide for business administration programmes by the ShanghaiRanking's Global Ranking of Academic Subjects.

You will learn from well-respected academics and business experts, gaining an international perspective on the major that you choose.

Complete in a shorter time

This master’s qualification offers the same rigorous and prestigious programme as other master’s degrees, yet can be completed in only three semesters (180 credits), or one and half years.

What will you learn?

A master’s is a rigorous, challenging, rewarding and exciting programme of study. Your study will focus on your chosen major, but help you put this speciality into the context of other business disciplines - reflecting the reality of today’s business environment.

To succeed at a senior level in business, or academia, you must be able to communicate your work and findings effectively.

The Master of Business Studies programme will develop your oral and written communication skills to the level expected of senior business leaders.

You will learn the processes and disciplines involved in high-level in-depth research and how to apply them to business. As part of your study you will complete and present a comprehensive written report on an independent research topic.

Relevant learning

Massey’s programmes are research-led. The Master of Business Studies not only draws on the latest business research but also has a focus on real-world learning. We utilise our relationships with industry and help you draw on experience you may have to give your learning context and relevance to the real world.

Flexibility of study

The MBS offers a flexible study plan comprising of subject specialisation courses and research-focused courses.

Why postgraduate study?

Postgraduate study is hard work but hugely rewarding and empowering. The workload of the Master of Business Studies replicates the high-pressure environment of senior workplace roles and high-level research. Our experts are there to guide but if you have come from undergraduate study, you will find that postgraduate study demands more in-depth and independent study.

Not just more of the same

Postgraduate study is not just ‘more of the same’ undergraduate study. It takes you to a new level in knowledge and expertise especially in planning and undertaking research.

Waikato's Master of Digital Business is unique in New Zealand, as it provides a strong focus on digital technology from a management perspective. Read more

Waikato's Master of Digital Business is unique in New Zealand, as it provides a strong focus on digital technology from a management perspective. If you're keen to pursue a career as a tech-savvy manager, this pioneering programme will bring you bang up-to-date with the theory and practice of e-commerce and digital business.

You'll gain advanced skills in how the latest digital technologies are revolutionising business operations and changing the way we interact with customers and suppliers across most industries. For example, even agriculture is now a hotbed of digital innovation, as geospatial data can link what we buy from the supermarket to specific paddocks, trees or vines.

Our students get hands-on exposure to contemporary business technologies, and gain key management skills in leading digital transformation strategies for organisations. You'll also have the opportunity to do an industry internship over summer.

In this degree, you'll explore topics such as cloud computing, big data, mobile computing, beacon technology, gamification, social media, business intelligence, real-time analytics, global marketing, IT consumerisation, location-based services, supply chain integration, automated logistics, e-government business services, and virtual team communication.

In a society that has an obsession with all things smart and mobile, industries and businesses that fail to keep pace with these new technologies will become increasingly irrelevant.

Students can attend face-to-face classes on campus in Hamilton, or choose to study online from anywhere in New Zealand.

Professional stream

If you’d like to gain practical knowledge of digital business and prepare for a professional career, this stream is for you.

It includes an industry internship (8-13 weeks over summer) working on real projects at an organisation of your choice, either in New Zealand or overseas. This is designed to kick-start your career by gaining hands-on experience, and help solidify your knowledge base.

You'll also complete an applied research project investigating a problem or opportunity related to digital business.

It's possible to study the Professional stream completely online if you wish – ideal for people who are working full-time. All interactions with staff and students will take place online.

Research stream

Conduct in-depth research into a specialist area of digital business that you're truly passionate about.

This stream may be the best option for you if you're interested in further academic study, such as a PhD, or a possible future research career. You'll get to grips with the latest research and gain expertise in how digital technologies can be applied in a business context.

Waikato has an international reputation

You'll be studying at Waikato Management School, a Triple Crown international business school accredited by EQUIS, AMBA and AACSB since 2005. This is a global benchmark of excellence in teaching and research, achieved by less than 1% of the world's business schools.

Waikato is ranked in the world's top 250 universities for the teaching of Business & Management Studies by the prestigious QS World University Subject Rankings 2017.

And in the Eduniversal Best Masters Rankings 2017, our Master of Digital Business is ranked 41st globally and 1st in New Zealand for Best Master's in E-Business and Digital Marketing.

The Master of Business Administration (Otago MBA) degree is an intensive two phase programme. Phase One comprises ten months of on-campus study of core papers. This is followed by a highly flexible Phase Two of on-campus electives, international exchange or a business project. Phase Two can range from six to twelve months.

The programme takes on a strong global perspective. Together with the diversity of our classes and opportunities for international exchange to renowned universities worldwide, we prepare students for success in the highly competitive global economy. Our comprehensive MBA programme also goes well beyond the academic syllabus to include career development guidance, practical experience and networking activities.

Lecturers on the Otago MBA programme are drawn from three areas - the University, other reputable global business schools, and consultants or business practitioners. They are carefully selected for both academic excellence and strong practical experience in running successful businesses. The small class size ensures a large degree of personal mentoring and guidance from staff.

The style of learning is highly interactive, and participants learn as much from one another as from the course leader or facilitator. Students are assigned to teams, which reflect the diversity of professional and educational backgrounds, demographics and work style preferences. These teams work together on projects, presentations, and assignments to apply business knowledge learned in academic class in real live settings, as well as hone skills such as time management, conflict resolution and problem solving.

Information for New Applicants

The course commences each year in early March. Student applications are processed as they are received on a rolling basis, and we will endeavour to complete the application process within a month. As class size is small and seats are limited, applicants are advised to submit their application early to secure their place.

Start your application by completing the application form on the Otago MBA website or contact the MBA Admissions Manager, Jenna Anderson on 03 479 4176 or email

International students are reminded to allow sufficient time to make travel arrangements and visa application if required. Also, the full time Otago MBA requires a minimum Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT) score as part of the entry requirement and students need to plan for this if they have not already done so.

There is an enormous and increasing amount of data that is collected. Examples include not just traditional data such as sales transactions, but location data (GPS), interactions between people on social network, measurements of sleep patterns, medication being taken, state of health, and much much more.

A key challenge is then to make use of this wealth of data. How can we manage this data, and analyse it to exploit useful information that can guide decision making?

This emerging area goes under the name “Data Science”. There is growing demand for people, “Data Scientists”, who have the skills to manage and analyse enormous amounts of data using a range of techniques such as data mining, statistical techniques, and machine learning.

Data Scientist has been called the “Sexiest job of the 21st century”, and the unique combination of technical skills (stats, data management) and business understanding has been said to make Data Scientists “highly sought after and highly paid”.

Master of Business Data Science (MBusDataSc)

The MBusDataSc primary focus is to equip you to become a practitioner, allowing you to meet the needs of industry, and solve the data problems of the world. However, there will also be an alternative path that will focus on preparing students for research in the area (e.g. going on to do a masters by research or PhD).

The proposed degree is inherently multidisciplinary, featuring Information Science and Marketing, which gives the degree a strong business focus; as well as contributions from Computer Science and from Statistics.

Once you have completed the MBusDataSc you will have developed an advanced knowledge of data science. You will understand how data analysis can be used in business, including being able to identify opportunities to use data, be aware of ethical and privacy issues and possible mitigations, and be able to select appropriate means of presenting the results of analysis. You will be able to select and apply techniques to manage and analyse large collections of data.

Degree Structure

The programme of study shall consist of seven 20 point taught papers together with a 40 point applied project or research project. Papers are either taught in semester one, semester two or are full-year papers.

You must complete:

INFO 424 - Adaptive Business Intelligence

BSNS 401 - The Environment of Business & Economics

Plus one of the following project papers

BSNS 501 - Applied Project

A unique degree

A unique collaboration between six New Zealand universities, this degree is tailored to help you gain the skills and knowledge to lead the burgeoning Maori economy.

The Master of Māori and Indigenous Business (MMAIBus) is a 180-credit, part-time, online master's degree delivered in partnership with the University of Auckland, Auckland University of Technology, Massey University, University of Otago, Victoria University of Wellington and The University of Waikato. The six universities share delivery of the programme providing you with access to leading academics and practitioners nationwide. Students enrol online with the university of their choice.

The MMAIBus is tailored to help you gain the skills and knowledge to lead the burgeoning Māori economy.

The burgeoning Māori economy needs skilled graduates able to stimulate local, national and international growth. You will gain advanced skills, knowledge and understanding of the practice and theory of Māori and Indigenous business, organisations and communities.

You will gain insight into cultural values and ethical business practice; be able to conduct independent research, seek innovative solutions and develop executable business strategies; and critically analyse, using culturally appropriate methods, sophisticated theories and appropriate technologies.

Who is it for?

MMAIBus is for those involved in Māori and Indigenous business and those who wish to enhance their understanding in this field, perhaps as business owners, managers or administrators. This post-experience, distance-taught programme will equip graduates for senior leadership roles.

How does it work

You will study part-time over three years. Each course is distance-taught in blocks of ten weeks, four per calendar year. You will undertake self-directed, individual and collaborative work and assignment preparation via an online learning management system, enabling students to study without compromising work commitments.

Throughout the programme you will engage with dynamic, relevant and meaningful content which has evolved from consultation with iwi, hapū and whānau, community and corporate leaders.

Your study will be kicked off with a two-day wānanga, which will connect you with your national community of MMAIBus staff and fellow students. Support services and group collaboration will also be explained to you during the wānanga.
