‘The Hague’ is actually an anglicised version of ‘s-Gravenhage, meaning ‘the count’s hedge’ and harking back to the days when Den Haag was a hunting ground for the Dutch nobility.

Nowadays, The Hague is a bustling modern city and the centre of Dutch politics. Though the city is primarily associated with diplomacy and jurisprudence, postgraduate students in The Hague nonetheless enjoy access to a busy nightlife, many popular annual events (including the largest free open-air music festival in Europe) and a wide range of entertainment venues. The Grote Markt is a vibrant town square full of busy bars and restaurants, while the city’s outstanding museums and galleries include the Mauritshuis, the Gemeentemuseum and Escher in Het Paleis.

The Hague is also home to a number of important palaces, monuments and other historical sites associated with its ongoing prominence as a major European city. Postgraduate courses in The Hague are also available at the city’s various universities of applied sciences (referred to as hogescholen in Dutch), which specialise in professional and vocational programmes.

Careers in The Hague

The Hague is an important centre for international diplomacy and law, hosting the International Court of Justice and many other global organisations. These include Europol, the European Patent Office, the NATO Communications and Information Agency and the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (which won the Nobel Peace Prize in 2013).

Important business sectors in The Hague include financial services, cybersecurity and energy. Royal Dutch Shell is headquartered in the city, as well as insurance company Aegon.
