Known as Bombay until 1995, Mumbai is situated on the west coast of India and is the country’s the most populous and wealthiest city. Home of Bollywood and the beating heart of the Indian financial and business world, it is India’s economic centre and also serves as a major educational hub with multiple universities.

What's it like to study a Masters in Mumbai?

In prehistoric times, Mumbai constituted seven separate islands occupied by the Koli people. Over the centuries, the islands were ruled by several indigenous empires, followed by the Portuguese in 16th century, and finally the East India Company and the British from the 18th century until India’s independence in 1947. Mumbai’s became a unified piece of land between 1782-1838 via an ambitious civil engineering project known as the Horby Vellard which used land reclamation and causeways to link the islands.

With its extraordinary fusion of cultures and heritage, nowadays Mumbai is a fast-paced and liberal city, showcasing a kaleidoscope of people, experiences and sights. While living in Mumbai, you will witness traditional festivals with both Western and Indian origin, along with many art, music and dance events. There is no shortage of landmarks to visit: from the majestic arch monument, the Gateaway of India, to the glorious Haji Ali Dargah mausoleum and many other breath-taking shrines and temples, including no less than three UNESCO World Heritage Sites: the historic railway station Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus, the 19th century Victorian Gothic and Art Deco Ensembles, and the extraordinary Elephanta Caves. Other opportunities for postgraduate adventures in Mumbai include tours of the Bollywood studios, shopping in malls and bustling street markets, as well as sampling the rich nightlife.
