Unusually for a masters course of this type, the options include an International Accounting and Taxation module. This explores the importance of a country’s social, economic, legal and political environment in determining the nature of its tax regulations, the challenges of harmonising accounting practices, and the impact of tax issues on company behaviours. Other options cover topics such as financial reporting and markets, accounting and society and international corporate governance.

In semester two you’ll take your management accounting and financial accounting studies to a more advanced level. You’ll also study corporate finance and take a module on research in accounting and finance. This will prepare you to undertake independent study for your dissertation.

Overview

Learning and teaching

The programme is split into two components: a 'taught' component (October to June) and a research component (February to September). The courses are taught at the Institute of Sound and Vibration Research (ISVR), which is a world-leading centre for acoustical engineering.

Taught Modules

The 'taught' component will consist of a range of modules based on lectures, hands-on demonstrations, laboratory teaching and exercises in small groups.

You are encouraged throughout to contribute your own professional experiences and thoughts to the learning of the whole class through a free exchange of ideas.

Research Project

The research project is the climax of the MSc programme. The project offers an opportunity to perform advanced research supervised by a member of academic staff. A list of projects offered by members of teaching staff is posted during Semester 1. You may also propose your own project.

Work begins on the project in February with the Project Development module. The research itself is mostly carried out during the summer period. A planning and literature review report is submitted at an early stage in the project, and an interview/presentation with the internal examiner is held at around the mid-point. On completion a dissertation is produced. This has to be completed and submitted before the start of the new academic year.

Assessment

Testing of the knowledge base is through a combination of unseen written examinations and assessed coursework in the form of problem solving exercises, laboratory reports, design exercises, essays, and individual and group projects.

Analysis and problem solving skills are assessed through unseen written examinations and problem based exercises. Experimental, research and design skills are assessed through laboratory reports, coursework exercises, project reports and oral presentations.

As resource costs continue to rise and client expectations on design, comfort and energy features change; the industry will look to graduates with specialist design skills and a strong working knowledge of building simulation, acoustic performance and energy assessment to help bring new projects to life.

To help you fill this industry need, our master’s course in advanced building simulation places a unique emphasis on the computer simulation of acoustic and thermal performance. You will leave the course with the practical skills required to design a high performance building and confidently consult on all aspects of its technical specifications.

Units cover a range of relevant subjects, with a choice of optional units enabling you to tailor the curriculum to your own unique aspirations and interests. Early units introduce the concept of sustainable building design and explore how the form, fabric, and equipment of a building affect its environmental impact. This learning will be reinforced as you take part in a live design project.

Units on the computer simulation of thermal and acoustic performance will see you working with industry-standard software packages and algorithms. This also links into the building assessment unit, where you will learn how globally recognised assessment methods like BREEAM and LEED help to inform the sustainable design process and benchmark success. Graduates will leave the course with BREEAM accreditation.

Although the BREEAM Accredited Graduate course is free to study, students are required to pay for the course certificate if they are successful in achieving the qualification. As of 2016, the cost of the certificate is £30.

Allergy affects around one fifth of the world’s population. With allergic diseases and asthma on the rise, the complexity and severity of these conditions is also increasing. Children and young adults are particularly affected and are bearing the greatest burden of these trends. Yet allergy, even as it relates to asthma, is often trivialised and clinical services to help patients with such diseases are often either non-existent or limited and lacking in cost-effective solutions.

Why study MSc Allergy?

Our MSc Allergy programme is designed to help healthcare professionals to gain a greater understanding of allergic diseases and to be able to translate this knowledge into their everyday practice. Offered by a World Allergy Organisation Centre of Excellence, our programme draws on the clinical, research and education strengths at Southampton, and will help you develop better treatment for patients. Our programme will bring you up to date with current best practice, allowing you to improve management of patients with allergies. This postgraduate programme is designed to help you treat your patients better; we provide health care professionals with effective education and training in the mechanisms, diagnosis, treatment and management of allergic disease. Our course will enable you to manage both adults and children with allergy more effectively.

Fascinated by the science of sound? Southampton Solent University’s applied acoustics masters programme can provide you with the skills and knowledge required to work in a range of acoustics fields. Suitable graduate destinations include consultancy, engineering, environmental health, built environment work or further study at PhD level.

Taught by experts with strong research and industry backgrounds, MSc Applied Acoustics offers students the chance to gain hands-on experience with the latest measurement, simulation and modelling technology. Students also study relevant scientific principles such as how humans respond to sound, acoustic physics, and how sound interacts with our environment. 

We have excellent links with the Institute of Acoustics (IoA) and the Association of Noise Consultants, as well as a number of commercial companies across the sector. These include KP Acoustics, with whom we have a formal partnership for work placement and mentoring. The course has also been designed to meet the requirements for professional IoA registration. 

The University also offers access to specialist facilities for the testing and demonstration of acoustic and electro-acoustic principles, including a hemi-anechoic chamber, audio isolation booths for sound recording and audiometric testing, and the University’s own digital 3D cinema.

What does this course lead to?

Acoustics offers an intellectual and practical challenge across a wide range of sectors, from manufacturing or construction to architecture, telecommunications or various engineering industries.

Acousticians could be involved in designing and planning exciting new infrastructure projects such as airports, motorways and sports arenas, or could be responsible for making airplanes and cars quieter, or improving the sound quality of a television or computer. Acousticians are also involved in the design of new buildings – from flats and houses, to skyscrapers and concert halls.

Who is this course for?

This course is ideal for students with an engineering or technology-related undergraduate degree, or who have chartered environmental health practitioner status or equivalent.

Students who are looking to gain hands-on practical experience using the latest acoustics technology will be well-suited to the course.

Facilities

To aid study and help perfect techniques, students have full access to the University’s laboratory and studio facilities. Students will be able to undertake acoustic measurement and laboratory projects using a wide range of test equipment such as sound level meters, a 16-channel data acquisition system, head and torso simulators, a laser vibrometer and ambisonic microphones. Students will also have access to cutting-edge simulation and modelling software, including MATLAB, NI Labview, CadnaA, CATT Acoustic, and EASE.

Solent has a 10-year history of successful graduate employment in the acoustic industries. Solent graduates have gone on to work in acoustics roles for Apple (acoustic engineer), Accon UK, Samsung (audio engineer), Cole Jarman Associates, Hilson Moran, Mott Macdonald, KP Acoustics, Hann Tucker Associates, Hoare Lea, Vangardia Consulting and Clarke Saunders Associates, among others.

The Professional Skills and Practice unit involves organising your own work placement with an external company, supported by staff and making use of the course team’s industry contacts.

There are a number of opportunities for work experience with professional partners and contacts, as well as through the University’s own Solent Acoustics consultancy.

Past students have worked on a range of projects, including for TruckFest, Isle of Wight Festival, Westminster City Council and KP Acoustics.

Our EC Council certified security and networking labs feature a wide variety of equipment from Cisco (including Cisco Packet Tracer), Fluke and HP, as well as high-fidelity simulation systems like the market-leading Opnet. Students also have free access to our devices lab, where they can test their web design projects on a variety of different computing devices.

This programme is a pathways-based research degree, with a strong emphasis on the development of skills and specialisms in Higher Archaeological Practice, Palaeoanthropology or Bioarchaeology. You may choose to focus on one of these areas, or alternatively you may prefer to acquire a broad range of skills across these specialisms.

Overview

You will engage with hands-on, real-world archaeological materials and situations, including opportunities to collaborate with a range of stakeholders and partners in the archaeological sector through a professional placement. By these means you will acquire skills for vocational employment or subsequent PhD research. Your programme will be embedded within Southampton Archaeology’s distinctive research culture, with world-class expertise, diverse practice, and contacts with the commercial environment and the heritage sector.

The MSc Archaeology offers you a choice of modules from all specialisms with no requirement to focus on a specific area. You may also choose to specialise in pathways Higher Archaeological Practice Palaeoanthropology and Bioarchaeology
