Successfully completing this course allows you to progress onto stage two of the British Psychological Society (BPS) qualification in health psychology or a BPS-accredited doctoral programme in health psychology. Successfully completing stage two confers eligibility to apply to the Health and Care Professions Council for registration as a health psychologist.

We designed the course to give you the knowledge, skills, values and academic approach to improve your work and study in health psychology. You learn to:
-Critically evaluate and apply different approaches, theories and models to health-related issues.
-Develop in-depth knowledge and advanced skills related to the design, implementation and evaluation of health-related research.
-Apply problem solving strategies to complex professional scenarios.
-Critically reflect on your practice, planning and personal development.

You can use your work or voluntary experience from within a health-related setting to aid your learning and training. For example, work-based reflection is a core element of the healthcare contexts module and is designed to contribute to your continuing personal development.

You may be able to gain supervised voluntary work experience within Sheffield Teaching Hospitals’ Medical Psychology Service. Potential placements include: diabetes; HIV/GU medicine; renal services; chronic pain; amputation rehabilitation; trauma services; burns unit; spinal injury rehabilitation.

Course structure

Online and class-based study
Full time – 1 year.
Part time – typically 1 day per week for 2 years.

On campus study
This is a blended learning course that combines online learning with on-campus study days. Full-time students attend a block week on campus at the course start in September, plus 9 days across 9 months (October-June), usually on a Friday in the middle of the month. Part-time students attend the first three days of the block week at the course start in September, and up to 29 days across 24 months.

Modules
There are nine modules that you have to study within 12 months if you are a full-time student or 24 month for part-time, coming in one day a month. These are as follows:
-Applications and practice of health psychology
-Client groups and stakeholders
-Healthcare contexts: work-based reflection
-Health cognitions and behaviour
-Health psychology research project
-Introduction to research methods
-Perspectives, contexts and issues in health research and practice
-Psychobiological determinants of health
-Research methods and measurement issues in health psychology

Assessment: essays; research reports; health needs assessment; ongoing reflection by personal development portfolio; research project.

Other admission requirements

Applications from students who have achieved a 2.2 psychology degree will be considered by the course leadership team. Where there is evidence that at least two of the following criteria have been met the applicant may be offered a place on the course:
-Applicants have work experience in a health-related setting.
-Applicants have an enthusiasm for health psychology.
-Applicants have demonstrated their ability to achieve a 2.1 within their undergraduate degree (for example, transcripts reveal a 2.1 in key undergraduate curriculum areas such as research methods).

All applicants are required to provide two satisfactory references (normally one of these will be an academic reference) and a personal statement.

If you do not have GBC you can do a BPS accredited conversion course. We offer an MSc in Psychology that would give you eligibility for GBC, provided you achieve an overall mark of at least 50 per cent and pass your dissertation. You should be enthusiastic about psychology and have a good understanding of the British Psychological Society’s core areas.

If English is not your first language you typically need an IELTS 6.5 score with a minimum of 6.0 in writing and 5.5 in all other skills or equivalent. If your English language skill is currently below IELTS 6.5 we recommend you consider a Sheffield Hallam University Pre-sessional English course which will enable you to achieve an equivalent English score.

If you hold the British Psychological Society (BPS) Graduate Basis for Chartered Membership (GBC) this course will support you along the path to becoming a chartered sport and exercise psychologist. You can choose to study to obtain GBC after completing the MSc if you decide to follow the full pathway to becoming a registered sport and exercise psychologist.

Successfully completing the course provides you with Stage 1 of the BPS Qualification in Sport and Exercise Psychology (QSEP), and prepares you for stage 2, which is required for chartered status.

You gain core skills in the academic and intellectual understanding and researching of sport and exercise psychology. You also begin to consider applied practice in sport and exercise settings, enabling you to be supervised and taught by chartered practising psychologists.

The course provides you with opportunities to study psychology in both a sport and exercise setting. In this setting, you consider the role of psychological interventions for sport performers, coaches and teams as well as lifestyle behaviour change, such as exercise and physical activity adoption.

You develop your work-related and applied skills throughout the course whilst keeping a major focus on developing your core psychological skills, especially in the sport and exercise psychology subject area.

To gain the masters, you complete a major research project. It may be possible to study your project overseas if it satisfies the module aims and learning outcomes.

They also have substantial practice experience in both elite athlete and physical activity and exercise settings. Put them together and these new disciplines are the key to explaining the relationship between brain and behaviour.

The course takes students from both life sciences and the physical sciences and engineering. Appropriate training is given to ensure all students can master the required skills and complete the course successfully.

For the taught component of the course, students choose one of two options: either a pathway focused on mathematics, computational neuroscience and MR-physics or a pathway focused on ethics, clinical neurology, neuroradiology and neuroanatomy, which includes a practical human brain dissection course.

Where your masters can take you

You’ll develop the skills and knowledge for all sorts of careers. Many of our graduates continue to PhD level. Others work as research associates and assistant psychologists for employers such as universities and the NHS. Throughout your course, you’ll have frequent reviews with your tutor to discuss your learning needs and objectives.

Applying psychology in the real world

Our ongoing collaborative projects with hospitals, mental health care units, the police and prison service, and several leading firms in business and industry will show you how psychology can be applied in the real world.

Our facilities

Whatever your particular interest, we have the facilities for your research. Our research environment was rated amongst the best in the country in the last national assessment. We are exceptionally well resourced for research in Social and Health Psychology, Clinical Psychology and Developmental Psychology, with a dedicated suite of rooms for different participant groups.

To give you the right tools for your research, there is a fully equipped neuroscience unit with excellent facilities for brain imaging, neuroanatomy, electrophysiology, behavioural neuroscience and computational neuroscience. We have access to a small-bore MRI device and to the University’s MRI facility for human studies.

Gain both theoretical and practitioner’s knowledge of cognitive neuroscience. Cognitive neuroscience combines techniques and skills including psychometric testing, electroencephalogram (EEG) eye tracking and imaging techniques – for application to neuropathological and healthy groups in clinical, academic or biomedical settings. Neuropathological groups may include people with head injuries, Parkinson’s disease and dementia. This course is ideal if you:
-Are a graduate with an applied or pure science degree including psychology, biosciences and nursing, and want to pursue a research, clinical or biomedical career in neuroscience.
-Work in a related area and wish to formalise and develop your skills, knowledge and expertise as part of continuing professional development.
-Want to open alternative career pathways.

The course gives you the knowledge and skills to evaluate cognitive and brain function and dysfunction in healthy and neuropathological groups. You learn to understand the important ethical issues involved in neuroscientific research targeted at neuropathological and healthy groups, such as drug development for commercial gain.

You have an opportunity to go on a six months work placement in a clinical setting under supervision of professional neuropsychologist consultants.

We also build your research skills enabling you to work as an independent researcher in this area.You have the opportunity to attend workshops run by experts from relevant professions and fields of work. Examples include private clinical consultants, NHS neuropsychologist, teaching staff from the Doctorate in Clinical Psychology course at the University of Sheffield and alumi from our course working in academia and the private sector.

Our specialist learning resources include psychometric measures for assessing cognitive function and 3D model brains for understanding neuroanatomy. You learn to use specialist equipment including:
-EEG
-Transcranial magnetic stimulation
-Structural magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)
-Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI)
-Visuo-psychophysics equipment.

Some lectures are taught by guest tutors including clinical psychologists and neuroimaging experts. You are automatically affiliated with our Brain, Behaviour and Cognition Research Group, which:
-Delivers targeted neuroscience workshops.
-Organises subject specific presentations.
-Has regular research meetings.
-Has strong collaborative links with other institutions.

About the course

Lead academic 2016: Dr Jonathan Wood

Translational Neuroscience looks at how laboratory research relating to brain structure and function informs the development of new therapies for diseases of the nervous system.

Combining the research strengths from the Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Health and the Faculty of Science, leading international basic and clinical scientists will provide an innovative and progressive programme. You’ll study basic neurobiology and molecular biology through to neuroimaging and applied clinical practice.

The MSc will provide you with up-to-date knowledge of advances in the field, research experience with internationally renowned research groups and transferable skills to provide a springboard for your future career.

Our study environment

You’ll be based in teaching hospitals that serve a population of over half a million people and refer a further two million. We also have close links with the University’s other health-related departments.

Our research funding comes from many sources including the NIHR, MRC, BBSRC, EPSRC, the Department of Health, EU, and prominent charities such as the Wellcome Trust, ARC, YCR, Cancer Research UK and BHF. How we teach

Classes are kept small (15–20 students) to make sure you get the best possible experience in laboratories and in clinical settings.

Our resources

We have a state-of-the-art biorepository and a £30m stem cell laboratory. The Sheffield Institute of Translational Neuroscience (SITraN) opened in November 2010. We also have microarray, genetics, histology, flow cytometry and high-throughput screening technology, and the latest equipment for bone and oncology research.

At our Clinical Research Facility, you’ll be able to conduct studies with adult patients and volunteers. The Sheffield Children’s Hospital houses a complementary facility for paediatric experimental medical research.

Hepatitis B policy

If your course involves a significant risk of exposure to human blood or other body fluids and tissue, you’ll need to complete a course of Hepatitis B immunisation before starting. We conform to national guidelines that are in place to protect patients, health care workers and students.

Molecular Neuroscience; CNS Structure and Function; Genetics and Modelling of Neurodegenerative Disease; Mechanisms of Neurodegenerative Disease; Applied Neuroimaging; Neurophysiology and Psychiatry. A 20 week Research Project will be undertaken in the Summer Term.

Option one: Literature Review and Critical Analysis of Science; Ethics and Public Awareness of Science.

Option two: Computational Neuroscience: Neurons and Neuronal Codes; Mathematical Modelling and Research Skills.

Teaching and assessment

Lectures, seminars, tutorials, laboratory demonstrations, computer practicals and student-led group work. Assessment is primarily by written assignments and coursework, although there are some written examinations and oral presentations. The research project is assessed by a thesis 
and presentation.
