MSc Sport and Exercise Psychology provides you with the opportunity to extend your theoretical understanding of sport and exercise psychology in a supportive environment. This programme draws on the strengths of a sport and exercise psychology team, who are actively conducting their own research, to provide you with an academic programme that supports your career aspirations of working as a sport and exercise psychologist. It enables you to become an evidence-based practitioner who is an active problem-solver, providing the best psychological solutions to the challenges you encounter.

The course has been developed for individuals who possess Graduate Basis for Chartership (GBC) with the British Psychological Society (BPS). The programme is accredited by the BPS, and therefore provides the first stage in a training process towards becoming a Chartered Sport and Exercise Psychologist.

The course encourages you to actively participate, engage in independent study, and develop a passion for the subject and the process of learning. You draw on your own experiences in a variety of ways throughout the programme, and improve your skills in both critical self-reflection and the ability to share these reflections with others.

You study core modules including Sport and Exercise Psychology Principles, Sport and Performance Psychology, Physical Activity and Exercise Psychology, and Sport and Exercise Industry Skills, along with two modules designed to help you with the research for your dissertation.

MSc Sport and Exercise Psychology is the first step (Stage 1) in gaining Chartered Psychologist status with the British Psychological Society (BPS) and Registered Practitioner status with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC). On completion of the course, you can progress to Stage 2 of training in Sport and Exercise Psychology, which is also offered by the Department of Sport and Exercise at the University of Winchester.

Careers

MSc Sport and Exercise Psychology is the first step (Stage 1) in gaining Chartered Psychologist status with the British Psychological Society (BPS) and Registered Practitioner status with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC). MSc Sport and Exercise Psychology students can progress to Stage 2 of training in Sport and Exercise Psychology which is also offered by the Department of Sport and Exercise at the University of Winchester.

94.4% of our 2015/16 graduates (first degree and other undergraduate courses) were in employment and/or further study six months after completing their course.

The Destinations of Leavers from Higher Education (DLHE) record collects information about what those completing university go on to do six months after graduation. The Careers Service undertakes DLHE on an annual basis through surveys and a data collection process. DLHE is designed and strictly controlled by HESA.

Pre-approved for a Masters

If you study a Bachelor Honours degrees with us, you will be pre-approved to start a Masters degree at Winchester. To be eligible, you will need to apply by the end of March in the final year of your degree and meet the entry requirements of your chosen Masters degree.

Occupational Psychology at Winchester provides you with the skills and knowledge requirement for Stage 1 of the British Psychological Society’s training route in Occupational Psychology, as well as supporting the transition towards Stage 2. It also incorporates the first stage of training towards Practitioner Occupational Psychologist status with the Health and Care Professions Council. There is an emphasis on reflective practice skills as well as a thorough understanding of ethical standards and practice within the discipline.

The programme introduces the context and application of psychology in various occupational and organisational settings. The emphasis is on developing your knowledge in the key areas of leadership, wellbeing at work, work design, and assessment in the workplace, as well as learning, training and development. You are taught by a range of professional occupational psychologists offering experience in a range of specialisms including coaching, use of psychometrics, human factors and leadership development. You benefit from practitioner advice on gaining suitable experience, and by incorporating practice-based assessments.

You have access to excellent facilities including numerous research cubicles and laboratories equipped for conducting interviews, observational research, eye tracking, EEG and psychophysiological measures. There are several staff members in the department with strong research and practice experience in the fields relevant to Occupational Psychology. The teaching team includes HCPC-registered Occupational Psychologists.

We consider the scope of Occupational Psychology from the perspective of the individual, their work organisation and any work with client groups. The programme includes problem-based exercises that may include elements such as mock consultancy reports, psychometric test use experience and development of training based on given scenarios. You develop your ability to appropriately design, conduct, analyse, interpret and evaluate psychological research in a chosen specialised research area within Occupational Psychology.

You complete modules including Leadership and Workplace Engagement, Wellbeing at Work, Work Design, Organisational Change and Development, and Assessment in the Workplace. There is also a module on research methods which helps you to prepare for your research project.

Graduates of the course are prepared to progress to the next stage of the BPS training and to pursue careers in occupational psychology and related fields.

Forensic Psychology at Winchester provides the academic component (Stage 1) of the route to becoming a Chartered Forensic Psychologist with the British Psychological Society’s Division of Forensic Psychology and Practitioner Forensic Psychologist status with the Health and Care Professions Council. The programme also supports you with the transition towards Stage 2 of the chartership process by incorporating practice-based assessments.

The course introduces the context and application of psychology in various forensic settings including the legal and criminal justice system, forensic psychological practice and forensic mental health. You are introduced to the role of a forensic psychologist in practice. The programme focuses on core theoretical models of crime with an emphasis on theoretical, practical and methodological limitations.

When considering applied skills in forensic practice, there is a focus on specialist assessments, core treatments and interventions utilised when working with various client groups in a forensic setting. Client groups include offenders in prison, secure hospitals and the community, as well as offenders on probation and within the legal system (court assessment). You gain the ability to design, conduct, analyse, interpret and evaluate psychological research in a chosen specialised research area.

There is an emphasis on reflective practice skills, and professional and ethical practice in the workplace. There are also opportunities for volunteering in optional forensic practice placements via the university’s volunteering department. Core modules include Foundations of Forensic Psychology Practice, The Criminal Justice System and the Legal Framework, Specialist Skills in Treatment and Interventions, and Investigative Psychology.

You have access to excellent facilities including numerous research cubicles and laboratories equipped for conducting forensic interviews, developmental research, EEG and social observation. There is a strong criminal investigation representation and practitioner focus within the teaching team, and there is a departmental forensic research group which complements the programme.

Graduates of the course pursue careers in various specialisms within forensic psychology, including the legal and criminal justice system, forensic psychological practice and forensic mental health.
