UCLan’s postgraduate Health Psychology is a British Psychology Society-accredited postgraduate professional training course. It fulfils Stage I postgraduate training requirements in health psychology. In conjunction with Stage II postgraduate training, it equips you for practice as a Registered Health Psychologist with the Health and Care Professions Council and eligibility for Chartered status with the British Psychological Society.

LEARNING ENVIRONMENT AND ASSESSMENT

The course is based in the School of Psychology, housed in the purpose-built Darwin Building. This building offers specialist teaching and research facilities, including Sport and Exercise Psychology Laboratories, Health Psychology Suite, Cognitive Psychology Laboratories, Brain Imaging Laboratory, Video Observation Suite, Biomechanics Laboratory, and Sport Physiology Laboratory. The building also includes a state-of-the-art lecture theatre, teaching and computer rooms.

Teaching is delivered primarily in small interactive sessions. Assessment is achieved through a combination of coursework assignments (essays, reports, statistical exercises, presentations) and research project.

OPPORTUNITIES

This is Part One of a two-stage postgraduate training in Health Psychology leading to Registration as a Health Psychologist with the HCPC and Chartered status with the BPS. Registered Health Psychologists work in academic and health settings, teaching students and health professionals, research, assessing patients, managing clinical interventions, informing health promotion and public health policy.

MSc Health Psychology provides an advanced training in fundamental theoretical, methodological and empirical areas of Health Psychology. The course addresses key contemporary themes within health psychology such as the psychosocial models of disease (eg the link between stress and heart disease), the development and evaluation of health interventions (eg smoking cessation or nutritional education), and contemporary methodological approaches to health psychology research (eg salivary hormone assessment of stress, auditing daily life stress, advanced methods in research design). A substantial component of the course is the advanced research project. You are encouraged to develop your expertise in an area of special interest under the supervision of a member of the course team whose research experience complements your interests.

As part of the professional training route for Registered Health Psychologists, the MSc in Health Psychology will develop your expertise in key health psychology competencies, and equip you to work in a range of academic and clinical settings. The training will prepare you to apply psychology research/methodologies in the prevention and management of disease, the promotion of health behaviours, the identification of risk factors for disease, the assessment of health care systems, or the development of health policy. This course is divided into three single-module courses, two half-module courses, one double-module course, and a three-module research dissertation. Two-thirds of the course is devoted to advancing students' knowledge in the core curriculum areas identified by the BPS. The remaining third is comprised of the advanced research project, an opportunity to conduct a major piece of empirical work in an area of special interest, and an exercise which gives the student the opportunity to demonstrate their skills in research design, data collection, analysis, and interpretation.

Anyone interested in child development, or planning to work with children in the future, will be fascinated by this course. As well as core modules in Social, Developmental, Biological and Cognitive Psychology, Research Methods and Statistics that will give you a BPS-recognised Psychology degree, you will take a series of specialist Child Development modules in years one, two and three that will give you a chance to study children’s thoughts, emotions and behaviour in great detail. You will be able to do a work placement in a child-centred setting, and you will complete an original research study under the supervision of an active developmental researcher. If you want to see how children play or how they interact with their carers or peers, you will have access to our purpose-built Child Observation Suite. If you want to see what is happening inside their heads, we have a fantastic Developmental Cognitive Neuroscience lab with a wide range of imaging equipment designed for children of all ages. If you are interested in Educational Psychology, we have lots of links with local schools and other children’s services, providing opportunities to study language development, literacy, peer relations, online safeguarding, antisocial behaviour and bullying.

LEARNING ENVIRONMENT AND ASSESSMENT

You’ll be taught by academics that produce first-class research, which has an impact not just in academia but in our working and everyday lives. Much of our psychological research was rated as ‘internationally excellent’ and ‘world-leading’ in the last research assessment exercise.

Year 1 is assessed by coursework and Multiple Choice Question exams; Year 2 through coursework, MCQ and essay exams; Year 3 through coursework or essay exams and the project. Percentage of coursework to exams is roughly 50/50.

OPPORTUNITIES

You can get involved in the research carried out by our staff, both as a participant and as a researcher, and not just through your classes and final year projects - there are paid research student internships and part-time research assistant positions available. You can also take part in conference talks, research publications and research grants - our current students regularly publish themselves, or become members of the editorial panel of ‘Diffusion’, UCLan’s own undergraduate research journal.

Some of our graduates pursue a career in psychology by undertaking postgraduate training to become professional psychologists, including our BPS-accredited Master’s programmes. However, UCLan graduates are valued more broadly, and others utilise the skills that our degree encourages to take graduate-level positions in a range of organisations, including the Police, Prison Service, NHS, social and community services, health authorities and in the pharmaceutical industry, and in education and training.

All our Psychology degrees share a common first year, with the opportunity to start specialising from Year 2. You can choose BSc routes in (i) Developmental Psychology, (ii) Forensic Psychology, (iii) Health Psychology, (iv) Neuropsychology, (v) Psychology with Psychotherapy and Counselling and (vi) Psychology and Criminology.

The Psychology syllabus is informed by the professional body, the British Psychological Society (BPS). All core modules are completed by Year 2, after which you can choose your specialism and, if you like, progress straight onto a Master's degree, which can provide stage 1 of your training towards becoming a professional psychologist.

In Year 1 you will attend lectures, seminars, workshops and labs. You will take part in Psychology practicals and develop your skills in statistical analysis and report-writing. Lectures are delivered to large groups, but other classes contain about thirty students. These small groups allow you to develop your understanding of psychology and to practise your communication skills. You should get to know your fellow group members, and learn to use your Academic Advisor as a source of academic advice.

In Year 2, you will study core areas of psychology in more depth, including Social and Developmental Psychology, Cognitive and Physiological Psychology, and Psychological Research Methods. You will continue to develop your skills in psychological research and report-writing but work in smaller groups, and take a role in designing your own studies.

In Year 3, you will complete a double module research project on a Developmental topic. This can be the most exciting part of your degree because it lets you investigate a subject in which you have a particular interest, supported by one-to-one discussions with your supervisor. The rest of Year 3 is made up of a mixture of specialist and general modules including two core Developmental Psychology and Educational Psychology modules.

LEARNING ENVIRONMENT AND ASSESSMENT

You will be taught together as a group, using a mixture of lectures, workshops and seminars. Online learning facilities are used to support classroom teaching, for the submission and marking of coursework and for independent learning. In addition to classroom teaching, the course includes substantial elements of independent learning, so you will also develop your skills in this area. A range of assessment methods are used – for example, unseen exams, class tests, empirical research projects, presentations and coursework.

FURTHER INFORMATION

The MSc Psychology Conversion course will equip you with knowledge about psychological theories, concepts and research findings. You'll develop key skills that are valued in employment, including report writing, data collection, critical evaluation, argumentation and the processing and analysis of complex numerical and textual information.

Successful completion of this course allows you to apply for further professional training in psychology areas (such as clinical psychology, health psychology, forensic psychology, sport psychology). The MSc Forensic Psychology course provides a strong emphasis on the application of Forensic Psychology in professional practice, and practising Forensic psychologists are employed by the School to lecture on the course. All of the more theoretical modules include topics on how the theory is applied in practice. The MSc reflects the academic skills underpinning the application of psychology to a forensic setting.

MSc Forensic Psychology attends to victims and offenders. With regard to the latter, it follows the progression of an offender from their first contact with the criminal justice system until their eventual release into the community and/or transfer to conditions of less security. The role of on-going assessment, intervention and throughcare are emphasised throughout.

LEARNING ENVIRONMENT AND ASSESSMENT

This course is delivered through lectures, seminars, practical workshops and independent learning sessions. Taught units account for 75 per cent of the award. The primary purpose of the taught component is to further students’ academic knowledge (including of advanced research methodology) and how this can be applied to Forensic Psychology in practice. The remaining 25 per cent of the course is based on an advanced research project; a substantial empirical investigation that will make a contribution to Forensic Psychology.

OPPORTUNITIES

A number of our graduates acquire trainee forensic psychologist positions, or go on to other careers associated with the Legal and/or Criminal Justice System.

The MSc Forensic Psychology course does not directly source work experience and does not offer placements, yet does actively support students in seeking employment, being paid or voluntary.

The major aim of this postgraduate course is to equip psychology graduates with the British Psychological Society Graduate Basis for Chartered Membership (GBC) for Stage 1 professional training in Forensic Psychology, and to equip them with some of the knowledge needed for future practice as Chartered Forensic Psychologists, following completion of Stage 2 training - a minimum of two years supervised practice.

MSc Forensic Psychology reflects the academic skills underpinning the application of psychology to a forensic setting. It is currently accredited by the British Psychological Society to provide Stage 1 (academic) training for Full Membership of the Division of Forensic Psychology. In common with other accredited MSc courses, Stage 2 training for Full Membership (supervised practice element) is not provided via the MSc.

This course incorporates changes reflecting the demand for quality training within the UK and other EU countries. The course aims to facilitate and evaluate student competence in core academic areas of forensic psychology, through supportive seminars, lectures, coursework, examination and independent study and research supervision. A final aim is to facilitate and evaluate student competence in the production of a research project designed to assess their ability to integrate core information from the course, implement it within a research setting, and demonstrate a good level of organisational and communication skills. Stage 2 training (a minimum of two years supervised practice) is not provided by the MSc and students will need to complete Stage 2 in order to qualify a Forensic Psychologists. The MSc does not contribute towards Stage 2 training.

The course comprises nine compulsory modules, which include advanced methods in psychology, applying psychology to the legal process, attributes of offenders and victims, forensic mental health, forensic risk assessment (including HCR-20 training), professional practice, intervention with offenders, and a research dissertation. Teaching methods include lectures, seminars and self-directed study and assessment is by a combination of exam and coursework.

This programme is aimed at graduates who wish to strengthen their academic credentials in preparation for a career in clinical psychology and is taught by academics/research experts in their field, HCPC Registered Psychologists, clinicians across a wide range of specialities, and service users and/or carers. You will also have the opportunity to undertake and be assisted in finding a clinically relevant placement.

With one day of teaching (Tuesdays), delivery is designed to support those with full-time jobs or family commitments, and full-time (one year) and part-time (two years) study options are available.

LEARNING ENVIRONMENT AND ASSESSMENT

We aim to provide the best possible facilities for our students. The School is based in the multi-million pound purpose-built Darwin Building, which includes an extensive range of state-of-the-art laboratories and equipment, including: a Brain Imaging Laboratory, Observational Suite equipped with one-way mirrors and video cameras; established Health Psychology Suite; and eye tracking equipment. The School has a thriving community of PhD and MSc students and has links with regional universities, NHS hospital trusts, schools and community groups.

The core theoretical basis of clinical psychology will be presented via lectures and supported seminars. Seminars or workshops are used to explore key issues from the curriculum, both to facilitate understanding and develop skills; you are encouraged to prepare material in advance of the sessions, to exchange information as part of a peer network, and to reflect upon their understanding. Independent study will also be incorporated, as well as research supervision to support the production of a high-quality research project that will contribute to the field of clinical psychology.

The course is assessed through a mixture of exams, coursework, statistical assignments, and an advanced research dissertation.

The taught component of the course will take place on a Tuesday to support students with full-time jobs or family commitments, and it may be completed over 1 year (full-time) or 2 or more years (part-time).

The MSc in Applied Clinical Psychology is intended for graduates who wish to strengthen their knowledge base, academic credentials and applied skills in core areas of clinical psychology. The course aims to develop your knowledge and understanding of:
-The theory and evidence that underpins the application of psychology to psychological distress/conditions across the lifespan
-Core applied skills of the clinical psychologist, including communication, assessment, formulation and treatment
-Professional issues and practice in clinical psychology
-Key research methods and statistics used by clinical psychologists and their application to clinically relevant topics and settings
-The application of clinical psychology in health and forensic settings, or in specialist areas such as clinical neuropsychology

Advanced research skills and competencies are developed further through a project supported by an experienced researcher within the programme team, where you will be given the opportunity to apply your skills to a relevant topic in clinical psychology.

The applied focus of the course places a key emphasis on supporting placement opportunities for our students; with staff assisting you in finding a suitable placement, and ensuring you work on a project that is relevant to clinical psychology (e.g., service evaluation)*. The course also targets your development of applied skills through embedding your core knowledge directly into clinical contexts within role play and case study review. A critical area in your skill development will be working on developing your competence in reflection and clinical communication, learning how to adapt your style for different client groups. This course has been developed by law enforcement practitioners to enhance knowledge and practical skills in the areas of behavioural psychology, criminal investigation and the technical aspects of obtaining computer-based evidence.

Aimed at personal professional development for current investigators in the criminal and private sector and as a natural progression for graduates in Computer Forensics, Psychology or Policing.
