Want to be a leader in Sports Medicine who engages with evidence-based practice to deliver safe and effective care to those engaging in sport and physical activity? The MSc Sports Medicine includes a contemporary collection of modules which offers options to suit General Practitioners, Physiotherapists, Sports Therapists and Sports Rehabilitators - enabling them to develop advanced clinical reasoning skills. This flexible course has been developed with feedback from clinical partners and alumni. Optional modules include Injection Therapy or Developing Strength; two modules unique to our course which will allow you to develop specialist skills to enhance your role as a Sports Medicine professional.

You’ll be taught by staff and researchers who have worked in the field of Sports Medicine from grass roots sports to National team level. Lecturers from Medicine, Physiotherapy, Sports Therapy and Sport, Exercise and Nutritional Sciences will work concurrently to deliver modules making the most from each of the speciality disciplines.

You’ll have access to facilities from the School of Medicine, the divisions of Health & Sports Sciences as well as the Sir Tom Finney Sports Centre and the UCLan Sports Arena.

This course will involve access to children and/or vulnerable adults. You will be required to obtain a satisfactory Enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service clearance (formerly termed CRB) and we will guide you through this process.

LEARNING ENVIRONMENT AND ASSESSMENT

Many modules will have classroom sessions supported with online learning material. Your module tutors will guide you as to the preparation required for teaching sessions and whilst they will sometimes give specific guidance, at master’s level it is expected that you take some initiative to read around the session topic so that you can contribute to classroom discussions. The emphasis will be on problem - based learning where a student will be facilitated to engage in deep learning and enquiry. Blackboard, our online learning platform, will be used to support this process.

All the staff teaching on the course are experienced clinicians and have many years of experience in education. Each staff member is delivering modules within their area of expertise and so you can be sure that you are being taught by staff who are at the forefront of their field. All staff are involved in research within their clinical and/or academic field, and where it is relevant to the module you are studying, the research will be shared with you. In some modules we also bring in experienced, practising clinicians with current expertise in an aspect of the module; this enables us to blend academic expertise, clinical knowledge and current clinical experience and to give you access to people who are able to ensure that your learning experience enables you to meet the demands of the current clinical environment.

OPPORTUNITIES

On completion of the course you will have the necessary skills to pursue a career in Sports Medicine. You will also have developed valuable research skills that will allow you to continue with your education. After completing the degree, students will be encouraged not only to consider a position in Sports Medicine but to also consider further educational opportunities such as progressing on to a PhD or Professional Doctorate pathway. The course team will be happy to discuss and advise you on these further progression opportunities.

FURTHER INFORMATION

Whether you are currently working in sport or aspire to work in sport at any level, the course will enhance your skills in assessment, management and rehabilitation of sports injuries and common medical conditions. As a student studying Sports Medicine you will also learn essential skills for health & injury screening assisting in prevention of injury and safe participation in sport. You will learn advanced trauma management skills enabling you to feel confident in working with a team, an individual athlete or in populations with common medical conditions. This will be supported by a member of the Medical School who has worked as a Consultant and Lecturer in Emergency Medicine and instructed on both the European Trauma and the FA AREA course.

Therefore the course aims to help students develop the necessary knowledge and practical skills to work in various areas within the pharmaceutical industry, including formulation, regulatory, and analytical services. Students will have a holistic view on the drug development process and be able to solve common pharmaceutical problems by critically evaluating and discussing the scientific literature.

The course is offered on a one year full-time basis, taught over three terms. It includes six taught modules in the first two terms in which all lecture material will be provided on our VLE to enable access.

The MSc programme is delivered not only via the conventional means of face-to-face lectures, workshops, tutorials and seminars, but the use of online technologies such as videos and discussion forum would also help integrate students’ learning into their normal daily activities.

Practical classes, problem-based-learning exercises related to industrial challenges and reflective activities throughout the course would also help develop students’ ability to solve pharmaceutical problems practically and provide students an opportunity to apply their knowledge into practice, particularly in relation to the need for appropriate formulation design and development, and how these factors affect clinical outcomes in practice.

A variety of assessment methods will be used for this MSc course, including essays, oral presentations, posters, written examinations and laboratory reports.

OPPORTUNITIES

Students on the course have opportunities to visit our industrial collaborators who specialise in liquid and solid dosage forms, which aim to provide an insight to students about the pharmaceutical industry and the various roles available in industry. Guest lectures and workshops provided at UCLan from the pharmaceutical industry and regulatory bodies also supplement the various modules studied in the course.

Graduate careers include: formulation scientist, PhD research student, and quality control technician.

Graduates may apply for further PhD study at UCLan or other institutions following completion of the MSc Programme. Alternatively, graduates aim to find jobs in the pharmaceutical industry as a formulation scientist, regulatory affairs officer and other roles in industry.

Eligible students may also be able to conduct their MSc research project in collaboration with an industrial partner in semester 3 as part of their MSc studies. This could be in the UK or overseas, subject to availability and agreement with the industrial organisation.

FACILITIES

The specifically designed Pharmaceutical Sciences laboratories have excellent facilities to carry out teaching and research in pharmaceutical sciences. For example, a single-punch tablet press and powder encapsulation equipment help provide practical experience of small scale solid dosage form manufacturing. Other specialist equipment such as coating and spray drying instrument also help enhance students’ learning experience at the University. The characterisation of various dosage forms in accordance to the BP or USP methods can also be carried out using dissolution, disintegration, friability testers etc.

Various advanced drug delivery devices for pulmonary, oral and transdermal applications are also available for both teaching and research at the School. Students would also be able to use the superb analytical instrument available at the University for their practical classes and research project.

While the primary focus of this course will be drugs of abuse, the underpinning science and methodologies are equally relevant to a toxicologist analytical chemist working in the pharmaceutical or other related industries.

As a Forensic Toxicologist you may be called to provide evidence in a court of law, training in this important aspect is provided through an Expert Witness module which includes a moot court presentation. In addition to acquiring a sound theoretical understanding of the subject area there is a strong emphasis on developing practical skills throughout the course.

This cumulates in a 60 credit project whereby students have the opportunity to specialise in various areas of drugs toxicology. This course will appeal to graduates from a wide range of disciplines including forensic science, chemistry, biology and other related disciplines.
