Take action to promote education

The aim of this master program is to train future teachers, researchers and entrepreneurs, to provide an understanding of the digital transformations happening in education and to help them design relevant and challenging projects.

Education is now globalized: teaching supports of all kinds are available at all time and everywhere. If it is stimulated by digital economy, education must also compete with it.

Schools are urged by society to encourage students’ creativity and eagerness to learn, to inspire them to undertake and share, to develop their lucidity, critical thinking and sense of solidarity. But this goals can’t easily be reached, in a context of social crises, growing inequalities and demographic needs.

It is a challenge we are ready to take-up: education is in need for new entrepreneurs, teachers and researchers, and ideally, people with these three characteristics all at once.
We are looking for talented students with a particular interest for exploration, experimentation and research.

Our candidates must have the desire to work together on exciting collaborative projects and to contribute now to tomorrow’s education.

Career opportunities

A business/job in a startup or an institution

At the exit of the master, graduates

– Become instructional designers, editorial managers or project managers in startups and publishers

Publics

At the entrance of the Master, students are

– Sociology students in educational sciences, biology, cognitive science, design, computer science, engineering sciences,

– Practicing faculty physicians involved in educational innovation. All are passionate about education and believe that its future is crucial for the future.

For some students, it is a step aside for a project.

This is the case of doctors who want to take time to imagine a serious game, design a simulator to train surgeons, embarking on a participatory science research, manufacture objects connected in a OpenLab for their research. .

This is the case of teachers who seek a breath for a job they love and want to re-imagine.

For others it is the beginning of a research curriculum that requires knowledge about learning in a digital society and that will combine several disciplines, computer science, cognitive science, physics, biology, humanities and social.

For others still, designers, artists, hackers is a creative field, for sustainable development, sharing economy, the development of “common” knowledge.

All meet, to discuss the tech ed (Education and technology) with 3 fields of expertise:

This Joint Degree between HEC Paris and Ecole Polytechnique will equip students with both the technical skills and the strategic mindset to lead successfully any business career requiring a strong expertise in Big Data.

Study in two globally-recognised Institutions

Ecole Polytechnique and HEC Paris are both world leading academic institutions, renowned for the quality of their degrees, faculties and research (see HEC rankings).

Their association within this Joint Degree represents the best Business/Engineering combination Europe could possibly offer, with extraordinary added value for the students who will follow this program in Data Science and Business.

Lead the digital transformation of the economy

Big data marks the beginning of a major transformation of the digital economy, which will significantly impact all industries. There are three main challenges to face:

  • Technological: dealing with the explosion of data by managing the spread of vast amounts of information that is often very disorganized (IP addresses, fingerprinting, website logs, static web or warehouse data, social media, etc.)
  • Scientific: replacing mass data with knowledge,i.e. developing the expertise that makes it possible to structure information, even out of tons of vague or corrupt data.
  • Economic: managing data both to control risks and benefit from the new opportunities they offer. On the one hand, it is absolutely vital to be able to control the flow of information, anticipate data leaks, keep the information secure and ensure privacy. On the other hand, it is also essential to come up with solutions capable of transforming this flow of data into economic results and, at the same time, discover new sources of value from the data.

Acquire the skills to make a difference in tomorrow's digital world

Exploiting this vast amount of data requires the following:

  • A mastery of the sophisticated mathematical techniques needed to extract the relevant information.
  • An advanced understanding of the fields where this knowledge can be applied in order to be in a position to interpret the analysis results and make strategic decisions.
  • A strong business mindset and an even stronger strategic expertise, to be able to fully benefit from the new opportunities involved with Big Data problematics and develop business solutions accordingly.
  • The ability to suggest and then decide on the choice of IT structures, the ability to follow major changes in IT systems, etc.

Therefore the program has three objectives:

  • To train students in data sciences which combines mathematic modelling, statistics, IT and visualization to convert masses of information into knowledge.
  • To give students the tools to understand the newest data distributing structures and large scale calculations to ease decision-making and guide them in their choices.
  • To form data ‘managers’ capable of exploiting the results from analysis to make strategic decisions at the heart of our changeable businesses.

Make the most of the worldwide networking and alumni power

Students will benefit not only from the close ties that HEC Paris has developed with the business world but also those of Ecole Polytechnique, through various networking events, conferences and career fairs.

The HEC Alumni network alone, consists of more than 52,300 members in 127 countries.

Program details

The key aim of the teaching in this Joint Degree is to provide students with the tools needed to solve real problems, using structured and unstructured data masses, teaching them to ask the ‘right’ questions (both from statistics and ‘business’ perspectives), to use the appropriate mathematical and IT tools to answer these questions.

Students will be equipped to shift constantly from data to knowledge, from knowledge to strategic decision, and from strategic decision to operational business implementations.

All these shifts carry with them numerous challenges that each require an interdisciplinary approach involving mathematics, IT, business strategy, and management skills.

The HEC Paris MSc in International Finance (MIF) program caters for highly-motivated top achieving graduates looking to succeed in a career in finance and consulting. Read more

The HEC Paris MSc in International Finance (MIF) program caters for highly-motivated top achieving graduates looking to succeed in a career in finance and consulting. The program has a strong analytical focus yet is accessible from either business and finance (business track) or economics, math, physics, engineering (accelerated track) backgrounds.

A flexible curriculum

A ‘tailored-designed’ approach towards education is at the core when designing programs at HEC Paris. This is shown in at least two aspects of the HEC Paris MSc International Finance curriculum:

  • The courses taken during the first semester depend on your experience before joining HEC Paris. If you have already covered basic financial accounting, investment theory, and corporate finance, you will start finance classes at an advanced level (business track). If you have not done so, you will start at a more basic level with significantly more class hours at an accelerated pace to enable you to cover the same material by the end (accelerated track)
  • The second semester is comprised of more than 40 Concentration as well as free electives. More concretely, students must choose between a specialization in Corporate Finance and a specialization in Capital Markets. In addition, they have access to more than 15 free electives.

Balance between theory and practice

The number of hours spent in the classroom by HEC MIF graduates significantly exceeds international standards. Around half of that time will be spent in front of world class researchers, imparting you state-of-the-art knowledge. The other half will be spent in front of top-level practitioners. The latter is one of the many ways in which the learning experience at HEC Paris differs to most and adds another dimension to teaching. We feel it is important to complement theoretical teaching by using top researchers and practitioners lectures to give our graduates that "extra edge" over graduates from other institutions. The more competitive the environment, the more important having that extra edge is.

Strong and cohesive peer group

Who your peers are matters: with regards to the quality of your learning experience, the perception of potential employers and for the value of your network after you graduate. This is why academic performance is at the top of our admissions criteria. However at HEC we look for more than just academic excellence: smart, ambitious individuals will underperform without adequate interaction. We put a strong emphasis on group interaction and encourage it in any way we can. For instance:

  • Honours are granted on the basis of absolute GPA and not class percentile to make sure that no HEC MIF student can benefit from the underperformance of one of his or her classmates
  • A study trip is organized in the 3rd week of the program with all HEC finance students participating and interacting in both professional and non-professional activities

Life long ties

At HEC Paris, we pride ourselves on the fact that ties built on campus between both professors and students continue after students graduate and become alumni. Our alumni get directly involved in guiding the "new generation" of HEC MIF students and to make sure they achieve the same success as past students. A few examples:

  • Career and job training workshops the first week of the program
  • More than 250 students take part in the formal networking event on the London study trip… and many more at the less formal Friday night HEC Finance pub crawl: a unique opportunity to gain privileged access to young professionals from bulge bracket banks!

International diversity

With 29 different nationalities making up the class of 2016, the International Finance program is equally as enriching on a cultural level. Working alongside a diverse group of nationalities can be highly educational and rewarding and is a true highlight of the program for many. London is the main hub for HEC MIF graduates in terms of placements although we also have alumni working in Continental Europe, Asia, Americas, and the Middle East.

The MSc Managerial and Financial Economics program at HEC Paris is a unique Master’s program combining rigorous training in quantitative and analytical skills with essential knowledge in economics and finance. Students are prepared perfectly with the essential reflexes for a career in many diverse business sectors, such as the banking and finance industry, consulting, as well as the corporate strategy or corporate finance departments in multinational companies.

An intensive and selective Master's program

Admission to the MFE program is highly selective. Only students with previous experience at a recognized international institution will be admitted. HEC’s expectations regarding the performance of students are very high and students should be prepared to put in considerable efforts during the program.

A balanced combination of theory and applications

The objective of the program is not to produce theoreticians but to train students to become top corporate executives by equipping them with the capacity to apply economic concepts and methods to their work and by enhancing their understanding of the economic forces shaping the business and financial environment. A solid basis in economics and its applications is an invaluable asset for solving problems in all areas of management.

9 certificates to enhance your expertise

With 9 certificates to choose from, students are able to deepen their knowledge in a specific area of their choice, and subsequently boost their added-value on the job market. The certificates are chaired by some of the top leading global companies.

An international program

MFE students follow the same program as the students enrolled on the Managerial and Financial Economics specialization of the Grande Ecole and benefit from the same access to both our powerful local and international networks. Interactions with French students will also enhance their understanding of the local culture and business practices.

Strong connections with the business and financial community

Students will have many opportunities to meet business leaders and top executives from financial institutions through consultancy projects, seminars, internships and career fairs organized on campus.
