MSC NURSING: PRACTICE
This pathway is open to nurses practicing in the UK only. It allows you to build on your current skills, plan, implement and evaluate patient care at an advanced level within the context of your own workplace. There is an emphasis on combining practical skills with sound theoretical principles.
MSC NURSING: PRACTICE (NEUROSCIENCE)
This new pathway aims to equip the qualified nurse with the skills and knowledge to create and implement innovative approaches to neuroscience care delivery.
You can choose to focus on the general award in order to keep your career options open. The MSc Nursing will empower you to develop a mastery of your practice and take forward person centred care. You will have an opportunity to critically examine your practice and services and develop an evidence based approach to improve patient care.
A range of teaching strategies are used, including seminars, lectures, action learning, online learning, directed study, practice based assessments and peer supported learning. The MSc Nursing is underpinned by a student centred teaching and learning philosophy.
Part-time students usually study one module per semester; full-time students will undertake two modules per semester. All students must complete 120 level 7 credits before progressing on to the dissertation.
For the two year part-time option, students will study over Semester 3 whereas for the three year option, you will study over Semesters 1 and 2.

The irreversible micro-vascular complications resulting in damage to the eyes (retinopathy), the kidneys (nephropathy), the nerves (neuropathy) and macro-vascular complications namely cardio-vascular diseases (heart attacks and stroke) and insufficiency in blood flow to the legs lead are associated with considerable human, social, and economic costs, and accounts for 10% of the total health care resource expenditure in the UK.
This relentless diabetic epidemic means that its management is becoming a significant healthcare challenge in the UK and as it is worldwide. Evidence suggests that there is an urgent need to match the ratio of Diabetes Specialist Nurses (DSN) to the number of people with diabetes they care for. DSN can be employed in various sectors of the health service both in the UK and overseas while others can potentially progress into research. Others may choose to go into academia working as lecturers or lecturer-practitioners or diabetes nurse consultants.
This course will suit you if you want to acquire a systematic understanding of the necessary knowledge, skills and confidence to deliver high quality evidence-based care to people with diabetes, or if you wish to update your skill for a different but diabetes-related career pathway.
Graduates from this course can potentially apply for such promotional posts as Diabetes Specialist Nurse or Nurse Consultant in Diabetes or Divisional Nurse for Long Term Conditions.
Guest speakers from the clinical areas will provide input in to specific modules. This practical course uses a work-based learning approach to develop the higher-level skills that will lead to advanced practitioner status.
This is a challenging and intense programme and allows experienced neonatal intensive care nurses to become qualified advanced neonatal nurse practitioners.
This 12 month course requires a high level of commitment to succeed and you will move from a nursing to a medical rota immediately upon qualification.
You will achieve a number of clinical competencies such as advanced resuscitation skills, insertion of percutaneous long lines, insertion of umbilical and venous catheters, airway management and intubation and chest drains.
The programme may be commissioned by Health Education North West to meet the needs of a modernizing NHS. Upon completion you will be eligible for a non-medical advanced practitioner in Neonates to work within a junior medical rota.

Simulation teaching will be undertaken in the university’s simulation suite and in the clinical area.
You will be expected to undertake a series of assessments including a clinical portfolio, written assignments, OSCE, and supervised clinical practice by specialist registrars, advanced neonatal nurse practitioners and consultant neonatologists.
Our Clinical Practice Wards are located in the Mary Seacole Building on the second floor. There are four rooms designed to give the look and feel of a hospital environment. The rooms are furnished with patient's beds, lockers, chairs, sinks and curtains as well as audio-visual equipment, internet and a teaching area.
We also have a number of clinical skills rooms that enhance student learning from taking blood pressure, to giving CPR and more complicated procedures. Along with nursing skills rooms where you can practice in a ward situation, there are basic skills rooms for sessions such as moving and handling.
The patient simulation laboratory provides you with the opportunity to tackle real-life scenarios in a safe and supported environment. Set up like a hospital ward, the lab contains hi-tech patient simulators that can mimic everything from the common cold to a major heart condition.

All the simulation equipment can be linked up to some very hi-tech computer and audio-visual aids. Groups of students get to role-play a wide range of different scenarios, with a lab co-ordinator observing, running and intervening in the scenario remotely.
Sophisticated computer equipment can also provide detailed physiological information for each of the simulators under observation. The lab will help you develop the clinical skills you need but also the high level communication skills that will make a real difference to your patients.

Contemporary midwifery requires a diverse range of skills and the programme is designed to nurture and develop these according to individual need. The MSc Midwifery allows for a variety of assessments related to the real world, depending on the module undertaken, and includes:
Simulation Suite and Immersive Suite
The University has state-of-the-art simulation facilities for clinical skills and simulation scenarios in a variety of high and low risk environments. The immersive suite, one of only a handful of its kind in UK universities – will enable students to practice dealing with any kind of incident in a virtual setting. A series of cameras project realistic images onto three walls of the room as well as onto the floor, while sounds can be piped into the room by specialist technicians working from a separate control room.
The room can be transformed into anything from the back of an ambulance transporting women between hospitals or from home to hospital or to a challenging environment such as a house boat where a woman has chosen to give birth.
The dedicated counselling suite with therapy and psychotherapy rooms can also be utilised for learning such as debriefing and coaching sessions.
We use a maternal and fetal simulation system called Sim Mom which allows you to appreciate the birthing experience from the onset of labour, through delivery, to treatment of the mother after the birth.
Past students have gone on to take up posts as midwifery managers, educationalists and consultant midwives. Others have continued their studies at PhD level, for example undertaking the Professional Doctorate offered at this University.
This course is mapped against the NHS Knowledge and Skills Framework, which was introduced to provide greater flexibility and benefits for individuals and employers. It provides a single, consistent, comprehensive and explicit framework on which to base the review and development of all staff. This course has been produced in consultation with clinical specialists to ensure that it provides the appropriate content for orthopaedic trainees and advanced therapists to progress in orthopaedics in the current climate. Not only will you have input from our own, highly experienced staff, you will also be taught by clinical experts who are in current practice.
Key lectures and case discussion sessions will be delivered on campus days by the consultant faculty, who will also guide the distance learning element of the course. This course will also give you access to expertise in clinical assessment, rehabilitation, spinal pathology and biomechanics as well as specialist surgical skills workshops.

A programme of formal lectures, case discussion seminars and workshops, together with online learning is delivered to students by a team of orthopaedic consultants, radiologists, advanced therapists and other specialists. Each of the three clinical modules, upper limb, lower limb, and spinal, covers the advanced assessment and differential diagnosis of orthopaedic and sports-related disorders, including pre-operative, intra-operative and post-operative surgery management and rehabilitation strategies.
For those attending full-time, additional observational placements are an integral part of the course. These are arranged for specialist areas of spinal orthopaedics, upper limb orthopaedics and lower limb orthopaedics. Placements are offered in key orthopaedic departments and sports clubs.
Research skills sessions are integrated throughout the course.

A number of specialist workshops will take place in the new University campus at MediaCityUK including surgical simulation sessions.
This course has been produced in consultation with clinical specialists to ensure that it provides the appropriate content for orthopaedic trainees and advanced therapists. You will gain the skills and qualification to compete for specialist posts in orthopedics within the NHS and private practice.
This course addresses the needs of orthopaedic trainees and of experienced non-medical health professionals who have been training/developing in their clinical roles.
Many doctors have advanced to higher posts in surgery as a result of completing the MSc.
The course works with a number of orthopaedic companies to provide specialist workshops.
There are also a number of bursaries available through these companies.
Not only will you have input from our own, highly experienced staff, you will be taught by clinical experts who are in current practice. Among these are internationally renowned Professors Lennard Funk, Philip Turner and David Sochart, as well as Consultant Spinal Surgeon Neil Oxborrow.

On this course, you'll receive instruction in core public health skills including epidemiology, statistics and research methods. As well as giving you the opportunity to gain in-depth knowledge of a range of topics; evidence-based public health and 21st Century Global Public Health Challenges. The focus of the curriculum is on the social determinants of health (which makes it unique among the other Greater Manchester universities).
This course aligns to the 9 key competencies of the UK Faculty of Public Health Curriculum. In this regard, the course will equip you with the core skills you'll need to to effectively interpret and understand key areas of health research and how this can be used to inform and drive policy. You'll also learn how to use this insight to inform and drive public health.
During your time with us, you can tap into the expertise and skills of our partners, who include external public health practitioners and research staff from across the University. Whilst the programme does not include a placement, or work experience, students have the opportunity to work on external or internal applied research projects as part of their dissertation.
One of our strengths is the small class size (typically less than 30 students per year) which enables close liaison between students and the leading research staff who will be teaching and mentoring students.

The MSc Public Health adopts a multi-disciplinary, evidence-based approach, focusing on the social determinants of health.
The taught modules will give you core public health and epidemiology knowledge and skills, research methods and quantitative analysis skills, and give a focus on health inequality and the social determinants of health. Full time students on this course can apply for student membership with The Royal Society of Public Health. Upon completion of the course students are eligible to apply for a fellowship membership with The Royal Society of Public Health.
Lecturers on the MSc Public Health have close links with a range of national and international agencies and community partnership, most through research, with an ‘applied’ focus. Examples of these links include: The World Health Organisation’s Collaborating centre for Research in Oral Health in Deprived Communities; The Royal Society for Public Health; The NHS; Department of Health; Strategic Health Authority; and The National Institute of Clinical Excellence (NICE).

Students already studying on the course report how their leadership development went hand in hand with the work-based and work- related learning that they have undertaken. Students describe how their leadership skills have been enhanced through application of learning within their own organisation. Self assessment of their own role as leader has revealed an enhanced level of understanding about the context of the organisation, decision-making, strategy development and implementation. Furthermore they learnt how strategic planning is undertaken within their own organisations.
Students realised that networking with people who could assist them deal with a leadership situation was so important to their role that they then purposefully sought out individuals in order to establish relevant links. For others the networking activity increased the students’ confidence to seek out work-based relationships with people in the organisation that they would never have considered in the past.

Current students place great importance to the processes involved when work related, work-based learning is used to support leadership development. Elements of work-based learning include thinking and reflecting on work practices, reviewing and learning from experience, and problem-solving within a working environment. This in turn positively influenced leadership development whereby the students developed a conscious awareness of their role, skills, skill level and style of leadership that gets the best result.
You will gain an insight into how to use CBT creatively and collaboratively with clients and how to assess, formulate, provide interventions and evaluate your work with clients. This course focuses on interventions with clients who have anxiety and depression right through to people with addictions, personality disorder and schizophrenia as well as other complex needs. There are opportunities to study new developments in CBT, family interventions and how CBT is used with people who have physical health issues.
This course runs part-time for half a day per week over three years, or full-time for two half days per week.
Depending on your level of experience and professional interests you can choose to study a variety of modules.
Learning is delivered via blended learning methods including seminars and master classes, critical analysis of case studies, relevant literature and research and reflection on practical applications. Use of video/audio, role play and skills assessment are essential to this course in years one and two to ensure competency of the student in practising CBT. The use of Blackboard as a learning resource is also an important element in all of the modules on the course. It is anticipated that a generous part of this work will be focused on enhancing self-awareness and using CBT tools and techniques on the self using self-help texts and interactive activities. It is anticipated that if the students can use some CBT tools on themselves that this increases self-awareness of their own interpersonal issues and also assists in practicing methods on themselves prior to using these with clients.

This Masters has been designed to meet the growing need for people to have the skill set to work with clients with complex needs or mild to moderate mental health issues.
Many of our students already have jobs, but inform us that this course enhances their level of employment, or offers a new career pathway. Examples of job titles in the NHS are CBT lead for mental health trust and cognitive behavioural psychotherapist/therapist.
This course has been created after request from the North West Strategic Health Authority. Some students will be able to use the Service Level Agreement to fund these modules. Other students will self-fund or request funding from their employer.
