The Medical Sciences MSc has a flexible modular structure that is designed to provide a broad-based training in current knowledge and research in medical sciences, medicine and dentistry. You are encouraged to tailor your course to suit your background, interests and career aspirations. This is done through selection of three taught modules in the first semester and your choice of dissertation research topic, upon which you will work full-time in the third semester. You will be supervised for your dissertation in a Research Institute or associated NHS department.

As a student on this course you will:
-Study diverse aspects of medical sciences, through structured, subject-based modules
-Acquire advanced knowledge and critical awareness in different areas of medical sciences and medicine

Delivery

The Medical Sciences MSc is an intensive taught course delivered by the Faculty of Medical Sciences and is based on the Newcastle University campus.

In semester one, you will follow three 20-credit subject-focused optional modules. Most modules are taught in either the morning or afternoon of one day each week. There are in-course assessments and you are expected to engage in self-directed study. Lectures, seminars, and tutorials are led by Newcastle University academics or clinicians based in associated NHS Foundation Trusts.

In semester two, you will follow additional two 20-credit subject-focused and compulsory modules.

Alongside the subject-focussed modules, you will also be enrolled in a compulsory research skills module. This explores the basic principles of good practice in relation to experimental design, statistical analysis and ethics that underlie all aspects of research in the biosciences.

In semester three, you work full-time within a research group. This experience provides an excellent opportunity to work in a professional environment. This course provides specialist expertise in core neuroinformatics (such as computing and biology) focusing on the development of research skills. It equips you with the skills to contribute to biologically realistic simulations of neural activity and developments. These are rapidly becoming the key focus of neuroinformatics research.

Newcastle is among the pioneers of neuroinformatics in the UK and hosted the £4m EPSRC-funded CARMEN project for managing and processing electrophysiology data. We are currently involved in a £10m EPSRC/Wellcome Trust-funded project. This is on implantable devices for epilepsy patients. We use computer simulations to inform about the stimulation location and protocol.

As the amount of data in the neurosciences increases, new tools for data storage and management are needed. These tools include cloud computing and workflows, as well as better descriptions of neuroscience data. Available data can inform computer simulations of neural dynamics and development. Parallel computing and new algorithms are needed in order to run large-scale simulations. There is high demand within academia as well as within industry involving healthcare informatics, brain-inspired computing, and brain-inspired hardware architectures.

The course is designed for students who have a good degree in the biological sciences (including medicine) or the physical sciences (computer science, mathematics, physics, engineering).

You will gain foundational skills in bioinformatics together with specialist skills such as computing programming, mathematics and molecular biology with a significant focus on the development of research skills.

We provide a unique, multidisciplinary experience that is essential for understanding neuroinformatics. The course draws together the highly-rated teaching and research expertise of our Schools of Computing Science, Mathematics and Statistics, Biology, Cell and Molecular Biosciences and The Institute of Neuroscience. We also have strong links with the International Neuroinformatics Coordinating Facility (INCF).

Delivery

We cater for students with a range of backgrounds, including Life Sciences, Computing Science, Mathematics and Engineering. Semester one contains modules to build the basic grounding in, and understanding of, neuroinformatics theory and applications, together with necessary computational and numeric understanding to undertake more specialist modules next semester. Training in mathematics and statistics is also provided. Some of these modules are examined in January at the end of semester one.

Semester two begins with two modules that focus heavily on introducing subject-specific research skills. These two modules run sequentially, in a short but intensive mode that allows you time to focus on a single topic in depth. In the first semester two module, you will focus on learning about modelling of biochemical systems - essential material for understanding neural systems at a molecular level. The second module is selected from a number of options. There are up to four modules to choose from, allowing you to tailor the research training component of your degree to your preferences.

The course is suitable if you have a background in the chemical or pharmaceutical sciences. It includes 120 credits of taught modules and a 60 credit practical project.

Themes include drug design, metabolism and toxicology with an understanding of synthetic organic chemistry. Building on University research strengths, specialist topics include bio-imaging and modern approaches to chemotherapy. Our Language Pathology MSc is designed for those wanting to develop a career as a Speech and Language Therapist in the National Health Service. This practical course is accredited by the Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists (RCSLT) and approved by the Health and Care Professions Council.

In year one you will cover modules in psychology, linguistics and anatomy/physiology that underpin the discipline. You will also begin to work on speech and language therapy (SLT) cases and have your first experiences of working clinically under supervision.

Year two is more specialised with a focus on motor, head and neck and cognitive impairments. With academic and clinical supervision, you will carry out and write up a clinically-based research project (an extended case report), based on a therapy programme that you will deliver to one client.

You need to be able to identify with NHS values as stated in the NHS constitution.

Teaching is delivered through case-based problem solving which means you will be participating in guided self-directed learning and collaborating with peers in group work.

[Delivery

The course is taught at Newcastle city campus and in a variety of external clinical placements. The course runs from 9am to 6pm during weekdays from September to July in both years. This is an intense course with approximately 25-30 contact hours per week with the possibility of additional contact hours during clinical placements. There are also block clinical placements in the summer months in both years.

You will complete compulsory modules followed by a six-week clinical placement in both years. Assessment is through course work, written examinations, in-course assessment of the clinical practicum, case presentations and in-course class tests. An important element of year two is the extended case report, where you manage a clinical case, provide intensive input, and write up your findings in dissertation format.

Placements

You will complete two, 11-week on-site placements either in the Aphasia Centre or the Child Speech and Language Therapy Clinic. You will also complete two, six-week placements in a range of NHS and educational settings.

Your clinically-based research project (extended case report) will be the basis of a third six-week placement.

Accreditation

The course is accredited by the Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists and approved by the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC). On successful completion of the course you can apply to register with the HCPC and RCSLT as a speech and language therapist.

The two year physiotherapy course allows students to explore the physical, biological and behavioural sciences that underpin physiotherapy practice and develop critical, analytical, reflective and practical skills that can be applied to a wide variety of clinical situations. Previous undergraduate experiences enables student's to engage in practice with a strong enquiry-based approach. Some shared learning with students from other health and social care professions introduces physiotherapy students to 'team' working in the NHS.

Central to this Physiotherapy course is the development of clinical reasoning and the critical appraisal of evidence-based practice particularly with respect to complex health and social care situations utilising a multi-disciplinary focus. Through critical analysis, contemporary legislation on policy, structure and function of health and social care organisations are considered in addition to how these impact on physiotherapy practice. Students complete a research project supported by an experienced academic research supervisor which draws together much of the critical thinking and has strong links to local clinical practice.

All aspects of the course are learned through an Enquiry-Based Learning approach (EBL), in which students work together and individually to further their comprehension, analysis and application of the material that underpins physiotherapy. Assessments include traditional examinations, poster presentations, group assignments, written assignments, practical assessments and videos.

Graduates find employment in an increasingly diverse range of healthcare settings including the NHS, the private sector, sports clubs and voluntary organisations.

In line with the principles and values which underpin the NHS constitution, the University expects all students undertaking programmes which lead to registration as a health professional to demonstrate the NHS values.

Our course provides a foundation in research methodology and evidence based practice in a flexible format. You can develop your own area of interest in a research or Evidence Based Practice (EBP) framework. It forms part of the 1+3 (Master's plus PhD) scheme under the ESRC Northern Ireland/North East (NINE) Doctoral Training Partnership.

This course is intended for graduates in clinical linguistics, psychology, speech and language therapy or a related discipline with an interest in research in speech, language, communication and swallowing disorders.

The course will cover:
-Social science theory, approaches and research methods
-Research methods in the discipline appropriate to your planned dissertation project and future doctoral research
-Advanced scholarship and practice in areas within that discipline as well as an awareness of current research
-Design and implementation of an original investigation including statistical and/or qualitative analyses and interpretation of findings
-Development of communication skills appropriate to sharing the findings of a clinical investigation with a professional audience through a conference presentation and manuscript suitable for submission to a scientific journal

You will be taught by internationally renowned researchers and lecturers, such as Professor David Howard, Professor Nick Miller and Professor James Law. They will support you to develop research and enquiry in specialist clinical areas.

The Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) recognises the programme as a Research Master's award, making it ideal preparation for a PhD under the ESRC funded 1+3 (Master's plus PhD) degree scheme.

Delivery

The course is delivered by Speech and Language Sciences in the School of Education, Communication and Language Sciences.

The five modules are taught in blocks of three –four days of intensive lectures, seminars and group work. Two Humanities and Social Science Faculty modules are taught on a weekly basis.
