You can select from a wide range of taught modules in the first half of the course and then select your own focus for the final project. Comprehensive computer science research training will help to develop your skills in computer and information systems, providing a basis for PhD study. Delivery

You can study over one year full time, or two years part time, leading to the award of an MSc. Our computer science conversion course is for those who have little or no experience in computing. You will study the principles and practice of computing. It will include the fundamentals of computing science, database design, network technologies and programming.

This course can also be taken as Continuing Professional Development (CPD), for example by ICT teachers who are switching to the new Computer Science curriculum.

Our graduates have an excellent record of finding employment (around 90%). Recent examples include:

Our research expertise feeds into our teaching. This means that you learn at the cutting edge of the discipline. We incorporate new techniques and knowledge into your learning and have an active research community. We have several research groups and four three research centres.

Delivery

The course is delivered by the School of Computing. You can study over one year full time or two years' part time.

The first nine months of the full time course are devoted to taught modules (120 credits), which are examined by written papers. There will be about 20 contact hours per week. You will also undertake a substantial amount of supervised and unsupervised practical work.

The taught part of the course follows three main threads:

  • programming: introduces the Java programming language
  • computer architecture: covers the basic structure of computers and computer networks
  • software engineering: considers the problems of the design and implementation of large computing systems produced by a team of designers and programmers

The three summer months are devoted to a dissertation project (worth 60 credits).

Research

If you take this option, you will be assigned to our Computer Science and Informatics Research Group. There is every possibility that you may contribute to published research and therefore you may be named as part of the research team, which would be a great start to a research career.

Study Abroad

We have exchange agreements with universities all over the world, including partners in Europe, Asia, the Americas and Oceania. If you take the Study Abroad option you will spend a semester at one of these partners, continuing your studies in English but in a new cultural and learning environment. It equips you with the skills to contribute to biologically realistic simulations of neural activity and developments. These are rapidly becoming the key focus of neuroinformatics research.

Newcastle is among the pioneers of neuroinformatics in the UK and hosted the £4m EPSRC-funded CARMEN project for managing and processing electrophysiology data. We are currently involved in a £10m EPSRC/Wellcome Trust-funded project. This is on implantable devices for epilepsy patients. We use computer simulations to inform about the stimulation location and protocol.

As the amount of data in the neurosciences increases, new tools for data storage and management are needed. These tools include cloud computing and workflows, as well as better descriptions of neuroscience data. Available data can inform computer simulations of neural dynamics and development. Parallel computing and new algorithms are needed in order to run large-scale simulations. There is high demand within academia as well as within industry involving healthcare informatics, brain-inspired computing, and brain-inspired hardware architectures.

The course is designed for students who have a good degree in the biological sciences (including medicine) or the physical sciences (computer science, mathematics, physics, engineering).

You will gain foundational skills in bioinformatics together with specialist skills such as computing programming, mathematics and molecular biology with a significant focus on the development of research skills.

Delivery

Our Cloud Computing MSc can be completed full time or part time. The course typically starts in mid-September and is delivered on our Newcastle campus.

Full time students are taught in three blocks. Each block is timetabled to accommodate all formal lectures and practical sessions for the modules covered in that block. This arrangement is to provide the foundational knowledge necessary to study the modules covered in later blocks. For example, Advanced OO Programming, covered in the first block, provides the essential background for Enterprise Middleware in the second block which, in turn, supports understanding of the concepts and tools for Cloud Computing and System Design in the third block.

Modules worth 60 credits are taught in the first three months and are assessed through written examinations conducted in mid-January. The remaining 120 credits worth of study are assessed by coursework and project work. Of these 120 credits, the individual project is worth 90 credits and is carried out in the last five months.

Part time students have the flexibility to study over two years. The only constraint is that you must be examined for modules worth at least 30 credits in the January of your first year. The part time version of the course is designed to encourage participation of employees from local IT companies. As a part time student you can carry out your individual project in your place of work, as long as the supervisory processes in place meet University standards.

Project work

You will need to demonstrate your understanding and competence in cloud computing during the taught part of the course before you can proceed with your individual project. There are no formal lectures during this period. Your five month individual project gives you an opportunity to develop and deepen your knowledge and skills, and to work in a research or development team. For your project you will build a challenging and comprehensive cloud computing application, from design to prototype development, testing and demonstration. You can develop your project either at the University under an academic supervisor or by securing an industrial placement through an open competition. You will have one-to-one supervision from an experienced member of staff, supported with supervision from industry partners as required.

Teaching And Assessment

You’ll learn through a mix of lectures, seminars and workshops combining theory with case studies and examples. Guest lectures from visiting professionals will support your learning and industry practitioners will set live project briefs and offer personal feedback.

Given the ever-changing nature of the digital marketing field, you will be encouraged to innovate and apply emerging technologies to solve business problems.

During the second year you’ll undertake an internship or consultancy project for a whole semester. You’ll follow this up with an Applied Management Work Investigation Report that will critically analyse an issue related to your practical experience.

The main assessment method will be via individual assignments and business reports where you’ll be expected to take a deep and critical approach and demonstrate your ability to think widely about the issues presented.

You’ll also be required to submit a 15,000 word, subject-specific dissertation where you’ll explore a digital theme in depth, applying research skills and methodologies that will be covered as part of your dissertation preparation.

You will have the option to undertake a Masters’ consultancy project as an alternative to the dissertation, which will be discussed during the course.
