In Massey University’s Master of Science (Biochemistry) you will undertake enquiry-based course work and a unique research project under the guidance of experts in their respective fields.

Intellectually-challenging

It is an intensive, intellectually-challenging programme where time management is critical and where you can expect to acquire many transferable skills, sought after by employers. 

Biochemistry focuses on the structure and function of proteins, the intricacies of cellular metabolism and communication and information transfer from nucleic acids to improve our knowledge and understanding of biomedical science, biotechnology and biological chemistry.

World-leading facilities and equipment

Massey University is well supported with specialist equipment to carry out biochemistry research. In addition to a dedicated tissue culture facility, real-time PCR instruments, specialised fluorescence microscopes and plate readers, the Manawatu Microscopy Center is housed within the Institute. Confocal, and scanning, transmission and epifluorescence microscopy services and expertise are therefore on site. 

Genome sequencing services are also readily accessible with both the Massey Sequencing Service and a New Zealand Genome Limited laboratory housed on the university’s Manawatu campus. This service center is equipped with ABI3730 and Illumina MiSeq instruments and associated expertise. A group of dedicated bioinformatics experts support this service. We house a full suite of protein purification, separation and analysis equipment, including DIGE imaging and access to mass spectrometers. There is also an X-ray diffraction laboratory and access to the Australian Synchrotron in Melbourne.

When you study Massey’s Master of Science with a major in biological sciences you don’t have to focus on one particular type of science, but will gain expertise across a range of your interests.

If you are interested in subjects like microbiology, genetics and biochemistry, but don’t have all the prerequisites you need to specialise, or you want to open the door to a broader range of careers, a major in biological sciences gives you a broad-based degree that keeps your options open.

Whether you study on the Auckland or Palmerston North campuses, you will have access to world-class facilities. These include the Manawatu Microscopy and Imaging Centre and the Massey Genome Service (part of New Zealand Genomics Limited), our controlled environment plant growth facilities, the unique and extensive university orchards and state-of-the-art plant physiology and biology equipment. We have large animal units and there are extensive Massey farms that operate as commercial beef, dairy and sheep farms.

With Massey’s Master of Science (Conservation Biology) you will learn to address real conservation management problems. You will work in a small-group setting and engage with staff of conservation agencies who are working, on the ground, to save our endangered native species.

The Master of Science (Earth Science) at Massey University will develop your skills in a field and laboratory environment that is focussed on solutions to Earth science-based issues facing society.

Explore the world around you

Field work could find you on a volcano top in Vanuatu, exploring ancient volcanoes on Chatham Island or assessing real-time hazards from an erupting volcano. You might find yourself exploring the back country of the Wanganui Basin or its marine terraces, sampling rivers and aquifers to determine groundwater recharge/discharge, or investigating erosion and land use employing both field and remote sensing techniques. 

You will also gain transferable skills that will be useful in many different careers. These include observation skills, advanced ability in data collection, analysis and interpretation, problem-solving and lateral thinking skills, self-motivation and resilience, teamwork as well as developing high-level written and verbal communication skills.

Examine the environmental impact

Massey’s expertise in environmental geochemistry includes remediation of contaminated sites, phytomining, mine site and land reclamation.

You can learn from – and build on – our expertise in the societal impacts of Earth events, such as volcanic activity. These include social, economic, infrastructure and the impact on local communities including iwi.

Specialised equipment

We have a range of specialised equipment which is available to you for your research and study. This includes:

  • A microprobe for spatial geochemical analysis of geological materials. Able to focus down to two microns, it allows measurement of changes in composition across crystals (which record pre-eruption processes in magmas)
  • Laser particle size analyser for measuring grain-size distributions of materials such as tephra
  • FTIR (Fourier Transform Infra-red) microscope. This measures water and CO2 contents in volcanic materials (related to eruption dynamics), but has also been used for analysing compositional differences in horse bones and carbon nanoparticles
  • Pyroclastic Flow simulator
  • Hyperspectral analyser for remote sensing soil,rock and plant materials (an example of use includes detecting mineralised ground by remote sensing)
  • FLYSPEC analyser for measuring SO2 in volcanic eruption plumes
  • XRD analyser for determining mineralogical compositions of a wide range of materials, especially clay minerals
  • TGA/DSC (Thermogravimetric Analyser/Differential Scanning Calorimeter) for uses such as thermal behaviour in volcanic glasses to characterise biochar
  • OEM (Optical Emission Analyser) for geochemical analysis with particular application to environmental geochemistry

Massey’s Master of Sciences (Geography) will give you the knowledge and skills to understand and help solve some of the world’s most important environmental issues like flooding, coastal erosion, sea level change, landslide hazards and environmental change.

Broad range of equipment and facilities

You will have access to a wide range of techniques and equipment, making it easier to progress your research in a timely and comprehensive fashion. From ground survey equipment like a Trimble RTK differential GPS and S6 robotic total station and a ground penetrating radar to a range of coring apparatus e.g., lake/bog corers, percussion corer and vibracorer and Schmidt hammers for relative age dating of boulders we have the specialist equipment to help your research meet global standards.

The postgraduate study experience

Some courses in the geography major are taught in block mode, which means you come onto campus for a period. This gives you the opportunity to come to Massey for a semester and spend valuable time with lecturers and fellow students in lectures, seminars, student-led presentations and seminars, lab work, field work day trips, small group discussions, and residential field work.

Postgraduate study is not just ‘more of the same’ undergraduate study. It takes you to a new level in knowledge and expertise especially in planning, time management, setting goals and milestones and undertaking research.

Geography options

The Master of Science (Geography) may comprise a selection of courses from across both physical and human geography. However, normally students taking this programme will focus on physical geography and it is this experience that is described in these pages.

Award–winning labs

Massey’s Manawatu campus hosts the only multi-function teaching laboratories in Australasia. The labs, built in 2010, won a Best Practice Award for Innovation at the Association for Tertiary Education Management conference in Australia and was shortlisted for the international UKS-Lab awards.

The facility is unique in Australasia in that it allows each laboratory to be tailored to accommodate a variety of disciplines. Technicians can do preparation in the dedicated technical area before moving this into the lab, which means students can spend more time doing lab practical work.

Massey University is a partner in the Joint Graduate School for Horticulture and Food Enterprise (with Plant&Food). Massey University is also home to ‘foodHQ’, New Zealand’s international centre for collaborative food research. FoodHQ is a collaboration between organisations including Massey University, AgResearch, AsureQuality, the Cawthorn Institute, SR, Fonterra, Plant & Food Research and the Riddet Institute. There is a breadth of horticultural research activities at Massey, including the work to understand the effects of light in improving crop production and quality, research on fruit crops such as kiwifruit and apples, Maori vegetable crop science, and plant disease.

Complete in 1.5 years

Massey University’s Master of Science is primarily a 180 credit master qualification. This is made up of 90 credits of taught courses and a 90 credit research project.

A 240 credit MSc is also available if you want to do more in-depth research. 

Or if you have already completed the BSc (Hons) or PGDipSc you can conduct a 120 credit thesis to achieve your masters qualification.

WHAT IS IT LIKE?

Massey’s MSc (Human Nutrition) will give you in-depth knowledge and understanding of the latest issues in the field of human nutrition. 

You’ll study nutrition principles in four core courses, then choose areas of interest for remaining courses, or a special topic, tailored to your requirements.

Develop your research skills

You’ll develop your scientific research skills to an advanced level with a high-quality, student-led research project under the supervision of experienced and dedicated staff. You’ll investigate the links between diet and health, and the factors affecting them, by evaluating the underlying research and nutritional mechanisms.

You choose how and where

Your research project can be completed in the nutrition research facilities on our campuses, in the community or in your workplace. Research projects may be part of existing research within the University, or designed specifically for your needs and interests. Your MSc (HumNutr) can have a particular focus, such as public health nutrition, sports nutrition or nutritional physiology.

Flexible study options to suit you

Study hours are flexible to fit in with your busy life, with courses offered in block mode. You can study full-time or part-time, combining study with your work and other commitments. 

Teaching is a mixture of self-directed learning (supported by the Stream virtual classroom environment) and block courses (usually two eight-hour block courses for core courses and two four-hour, half-day block courses for elective courses). The block courses are video-linked and you can attend in Palmerston North or Auckland, regardless of where the course is hosted. 

If you don’t have a science or nutrition background, you can take a conversion course, such as the graduate certificate or graduate diploma, to transition to postgraduate study. If you have postgraduate qualifications in nutrition or dietetics, you may be eligible to enrol in an MSc(HumNutr) by thesis or a PhD.

Careers

With internationally marketable skills, you’ll be able to select from a wide range of career opportunities as a human nutrition postgraduate, including:

  • Health promotion/public health (such as District Health Boards, Ministry of Health, NZ Heart Foundation)
  • Sport and exercise nutrition (such as elite and recreational sports teams, fitness industry)
  • Research in universities and Crown Research Institutes (like AgResearch, Plant & Food Research)
