Learn about conservation biology surrounded by an international hotspot for biodiversity, in the science capital of New Zealand, from world leaders in conservation practice.

This Master of Conservation Biology (MConBio) programme is a professional one year Masters drawing on scientific expertise and its application to conservation throughout New Zealand.

We explore the processes of conservation biology and look at practical problems and solutions in examples from New Zealand and internationally. Skills in experimental design, collection and analysis of data and presentation of research results will be gained by students in conservation, ecology and biodiversity. We use examples of internationally renowned best conservation practice being applied. Our studies include theoretical and field based approaches including an extensive range of terrestrial and marine environments that enable a comprehensive study of the important issues in conservation.

A supervisor is not usually required for completion of this programme, as there is no thesis component. The masters programme can be completed in one year. Normal prerequisites for entry into the programme may not apply if students can provide evidence of excellence in their field of study and/or sufficient work or volunteer experience.

The Master of Conservation Biology (MConBio) is designed both for international and New Zealand students who wish to gain a broad understanding of conservation biology. It is an ideal qualification for those seeking employment in a wide range of government, conservation and resource management agencies worldwide. The programme can be undertaken part time and would also suit those in employment looking to increase their capacity. It also prepares students for doctoral studies. A background in ecology is optimal but not necessary for entry into the programme.

Course Outline

The Master of Information Technology is aimed at IT professionals and recent graduates (domestic and international) wishing to undertake an advanced programme of study in order to prepare for further study or to assist with obtaining a more senior position.

Course Content

Master of Information Technology students will undertake a coherent programme of 180 credits approved by the programme manager and will follow one of two pathways.

Pathway 1

The first pathway is designed for students who want to undertake more course work and consists of four compulsory components:

- IT801 Managing ICT Projects and Systems
The student will develop knowledge and skills in managing ICT projects and systems. The student will also research into established frameworks that are relevant to current industry trends.
- IT802 Researching ICT Issues and Trends
The student will develop knowledge and skills in critiquing and undertaking research, assessing social impacts of ICT and analysing ethical issues in ICT practice.
- IT803 Research Proposal
The student will develop expertise in preparing research proposals, including reviewing relevant literature, selecting a methodology and exploring ethical issues.
-IT901 Research Project
The student will develop expertise in conducting applied research that informs professional ICT practice.

and an approved selection of level 8 papers worth at least 90 credits from the following list:

- IT811 Business Analysis
The student will develop knowledge and skills in analysing the structure and function of organisations in order to improve efficiency and productivity using ICT.
- IT812 Business Intelligence
The student will develop knowledge and skills in analysing the strategic use of data warehousing, data mining and data analysis in order to obtain business intelligence.
- IT813 ICT Infrastructure
The student will develop knowledge about various aspects of ICT infrastructure, including emerging digital technologies.
- IT814 ICT Quality
The student will develop knowledge and skills in the application of methods and techniques used in ICT quality assurance and testing.
- IT815 ICT Security
The student will develop knowledge of the impact of security on an ICT infrastructure, research into the ethical and legal implications of ICT security and cybercrime, and identify appropriate investigation strategies in the light of emerging digital technologies.
- IT816 Mobile Application Development
The student will develop knowledge and skills required to create, market and deploy a mobile application.
- IT817 Web Application Development
The student will develop knowledge and skills required to develop web services and applications.
- IT818 Special Topic
The student will critically examine current developments and emerging issues in a specified topic area.
- IT819 Applied Project
The student will be able to identify and apply appropriate ICT techniques and technologies to solve a non-trivial problem in a business, educational, industrial or similar setting.

Pathway 2

The second pathway is designed for students who want to undertake a more substantial research project and consists of four compulsory components:

- IT801 Managing ICT Projects and Systems
- The student will develop knowledge and skills in managing ICT projects and systems. The student will also research into established frameworks that are relevant to current industry trends.
- IT802 Researching ICT Issues and Trends
The student will develop knowledge and skills in critiquing and undertaking research, assessing social impacts of ICT and analysing ethical issues in ICT practice.
- IT803 Research Proposal
The student will develop expertise in preparing research proposals, including reviewing relevant literature, selecting a methodology and exploring ethical issues.
- IT902 Thesis
The student will develop expertise in conducting publishable research about applied ICT.

New Zealand is widely regarded as a world leader in marine conservation, and Victoria University of Wellington offers the only taught Masters in Marine Conservation in New Zealand.

A unique place to study marine conservation, New Zealand offers abundant access to extensive coastline that reaches from sub-tropical climates in the far north to the remote and windswept Stewart Island in the south. It is home to numerous rare and endemic marine organisms, from tiny phytoplankton to formidable sea lions. The capital city location of Victoria enables us to draw on local and national research, management and conservation agencies, who are actively engaged in our teaching programme. The programme also includes a tropical marine biology field course, which is held in either Australia or Indonesia in alternate years.

With the pressing need for scientists to advise on, implement and manage the growing number of marine protected areas around the world, our graduates are highly sought after and are well placed to work around the world in a number of exciting roles such as:

- research institutes and consultancy firms carrying out marine biology work
- local and national government agencies managing marine conservation and fisheries
- national and international non-governmental organisations and not-for- profit organisations with an environmental focus.

Two study options are available:

Master of Marine Conservation (MMarCon) is a taught Master's with no thesis component. It is an 12 month programme that may be started in January or June.
Postgraduate Certificate in Marine Conservation (PGCertMarCon), involving 6 months of coursework.

The MSc can be studied in any of the subjects listed below, and may be taken by a combination of coursework and thesis, or by thesis only. Students who have a Bachelor's degree will complete the MSc by papers and thesis (at least two years of full-time study). Students who have an Honours degree or postgraduate diploma can complete the degree by thesis only (minimum of one year of study).

Structure of the Programme

The degree may be awarded in any of the subjects listed above. With the approval of the Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Sciences) the degree may be awarded in a subject not listed above.

The programme of study shall be as prescribed for the subject concerned. A candidate whose qualification for entry to the programme is the degree of Bachelor of Science with Honours or the Postgraduate Diploma in Science or equivalent may achieve the degree after a minimum of one year of further study, normally by completing a thesis or equivalent as prescribed in the MSc Schedule.
A candidate may be exempted from some of the prescribed papers on the basis of previous study.

A candidate shall, before commencing the investigation to be described in a thesis, secure the approval of the Head of the Department concerned for the topic, the supervisor(s), and the proposed course of the investigation.

A candidate may not present a thesis which has previously been accepted for another degree. A candidate taking the degree by papers and thesis must pass both the papers and the thesis components.

For the thesis, the research should be of a kind that a diligent and competent student should complete within one year of full-time study
