Using knowledge of psychology to improve daily life

With the Master’s programme Applied Cognitive Psychology, you will apply the most up-to-date knowledge of cognition to situations and solutions for problems that occur in daily life. Students will apply knowledge of human cognitive, sensory and motor systems in real-life situations.

Processing information

During this one-year programme, you will learn about processing information, especially about how you can use that information to advise clients on how to improve communications. That knowledge is useful for making signage or advertising more effective, for example, or for making products more user-friendly.

Students also learn to come up with solutions for a wide range of problems that can occur in professional practice. Humans are dramatically changing their environment using increasingly complex technology, such as the Internet, social media, robotics and automation. In order to design a living environment that is well suited to human cognitive abilities, we must have a good understanding of how humans process knowledge and their skill at applying it.

Apply psychological knowledge creatively to everyday problems

International orientation

This Master’s programme is internationally oriented, from the literature used in class to the opportunity to do an internship and write a thesis abroad, and from the option of attending electives at foreign universities to participating in international summer schools, research conferences or workshops.

Learn to work in multidisciplinary teams

Both our lecturers and our students have very diverse backgrounds. During the study programme, you will spend a lot of time learning to work in multi-disciplinary teams. Accurate and careful communication is vital to that process.

Humans are dramatically changing their environment using increasingly complex technology

The purpose of the programme

Once you have completed the Master’s programme, you will be a true academic professional who can apply scientific knowledge in day-to-day practice, such as acting as an independent consultant on ergonomic problems. As a member of an interdisciplinary team, you will contribute to solving these problems together with designers, policy makers, technicians, computer scientists and business experts. The human side of economics: the impact of psychology on decision making

Why do people not always act as rational economic decision makers? How can we apply mathematics and psychology to improve our economic models? Contrary to assumptions in traditional economics, people do not automatically choose the optimal course of action, even if given proper incentives. Intrigued? Our Behavioural Economics programme brings you the skills to optimise strategies and policies by including the framing and context that affect people’s choices.

The skills-based specialisation addresses the psychology of decision making. In both mainstream and behavioural economics courses you will acquire both a deep understanding of economics and the skills to adapt strategies and policies to deviations from rational behaviour.

Erasmus School of Economics, where else?

Few universities offer this increasingly popular stream in economics. If Behavioural Economics is your programme of choice, Rotterdam, frontrunner in economics, makes perfect sense. Select the curriculum that suits you best, study among ambitious and inquisitive co-students and benefit from the expertise of the internationally renowned Behavioural Economics Group.

Careers

Countries like the US, UK, and the Netherlands, and companies worldwide increasingly use the insights from Behavioural Economics to shape their policies. With this specialisation you can either help improve products, marketing policies, negotiation procedures, contracts, and financial portfolios in business, or design and improve public economic policies and strategies. It’s up to you. Careers are possible in many sectors, including:

  • Consultancy
  • Financial sector
  • Governments

Biofabrication

Creating functional tissue models with 3D printing technologies: Biofabrication combines advanced fabrication techniques with biological systems to prepare designed tissue constructs.

Tissue constructs can be applied for tissue engineering, as 3D in vitro biologic models or as medical therapeutic products.
Biofabrication is a truly multidisciplinary area of research. It requires an understanding of chemistry, physics, biology, medicine, robotics and computer science. In this respect, few researchers entering the biofabrication field have been trained in such a diverse range of subjects.

Students enrolled in the Biofabrication programme at Utrecht University will complete their coursework required for the degree in Utrecht at Utrecht University / UMC Utrecht, as well as a research project that fills the first year. A total of 60 EC including a research project will be undertaken in Australia in the second year, at either Queensland University of Technology or University of Wollongong. Both institutions have a strong reputation in the field of Biofabrication and are in the forefront of 3D printing with biomaterials. *Please note that it is our intention to transform this programme into a new programme Biology of Cardiovascular Disease from September 2017 onwards. The option to focus on areas other than cardiovascular disease then will be limited.*

The Master's in Biology of Disease focuses on the translation of disease into a scientifically secure experiment/model, in order to study its underlying mechanisms and reveal potential therapies.

The Master's programme in Biology of Disease offers the opportunity to study disease mechanisms in the broadest sense via internships in pre-clinical and clinical research in medical, biomedical, biological, industrial and veterinary labs; and to focus on more than one clinical specialty enabling you to conduct research projects on different subjects and diseases. Alternatively this programme offers the possibility to focus on cardiovascular research.

This two year research programme comprises theoretical courses, elective courses, seminars, a major and minor research project, and the writing of a Master's thesis. The core component of this two year research programme consists of independently planning and conducting the two research projects, which will take 15 months in total. The minor research project may be completed elsewhere in the Netherlands or abroad; or it may be replaced by a specific profile: Management, Teaching and Communication or Drug Regulatory Sciences. Graduates of this programme are prepared for PhD studies (approximately 65% choose for this option); or to take on a position in the medical-technical or pharmaceutical industry, or in science journalism.

Study a Master's in Business Studies in the Netherlands

Are you a future Interdisciplinary Business Professional?

  • Do you wish to work in interdisciplinary teams with people from different backgrounds and contribute your expertise and creativity to achieve a common goal?
  • Are you able to think out of the box, accept new, exciting challenges and study problems from all possible angles?
  • Are you prepared to study hard and work even harder, by putting your practical, hands-on daring attitude to good use?

Then the English-taught Master of Science in Business Studies from Hanze University of Applied Sciences, Groningen, is the right programme for you!

The Master of Science in Business Studies is an intensive, ground-breaking one-year international Master programme in the domain of business studies, designed for ambitious students who are eager to make a difference. You will contribute to solutions and innovations for wicked problems that organisations are facing. Wicked problems are complex interdisciplinary issues that require innovative and diverse answers for organisations that add value to both people and our planet.

The Master of Science in Business Studies

The Master of Science in Business Studies aims to educate ambitious, agile and innovative Business Professionals who are shaping their own entrepreneurship as so-called intrapreneurs. These Business Professionals accept challenges and are able to effect innovations in interdisciplinary forms of cooperation that will contribute to society in a meaningful way.

Dealing with wicked problems

Companies and organisations are facing a world in transition. They must cope with the effects of economic developments and societal changes such as globalisation,

digitalisation, internationalisation and sustainability. They must deal with complex issues, that are hard to define, difficult to predict and have several causes. For instance:

  • How can they guarantee that their colourful t-shirts and dresses are not sown by six-year olds?
  • What can organisations do to prevent cyberattacks on their computer systems without compromising the privacy of their clients and workforce?
  • How can they counter claims that they are responsible for the “plastic soup” in our oceans, killing off precious coral banks and sea life alike?

Survive, thrive and innovate

To survive and thrive, companies and organisations must innovate. They must look to the future. To remain relevant, they need to adapt and change. They must grab wicked problems by the tail and transform threats into opportunities and find the right answers to dilemmas. They need professionals with an open mind, who are equipped and prepared to team up with co-workers of other disciplines within and outside the organisation. To become Interdisciplinary Business Professionals who have what it takes to do what needs to be done. This is the first Master programme offered by a university of applied sciences in the Netherlands to meet this need.

Becoming leaders as well team players

As a future Interdisciplinary Business Professional, you will be a leader as well as a team player. You will be expected to take the lead in innovations and groundbreaking projects, while cooperating with team members with an entirely different background and point of view. During this Master programme, you will carry out individual and collective assignments, working independently and with a team of fellow-students, lecturer-researchers, professors and the professional field. This is how you will develop your personal and professional skills to become the creative intrapreneur organisations and companies need and demand.

Community of Learners

From day one you will work in an interdisciplinary, international setting. We offer you an ambitious and safe environment to cultivate your individual talents as well as your ability to work with others in co-creation. You will be part of an active and stimulating Community of Learners, consisting of your fellow-students as well as committed professors, lecturer-researchers and the professional practice. Within the Community you cooperate and learn from each other with the aim to create new knowledge for complex issues leading to sustainable solutions and innovations. You will learn to master the knowledge, skills, and, most importantly, the new roles you will need in your future job and you will be coached in your leadership skills.

Applied Research, Interdisciplinary Assignments, Professional Skills Development & Ethics

The Master programme consists of three pillars: Applied research, Interdisciplinary Assignments and Professional Skills Development & Ethics. These three pillars are based on the view that the future Business Professional needs to be equipped with critical thinking skills along with analytical skills to be able to handle complex issues. The interdisciplinary assignments enhance cooperation and communication skills with professionals from various disciplines and backgrounds. The Professional Skills Development & Ethics focuses on the ability to reflect on one’s own behaviour and development and to adapt accordingly. The Master programme kicks off with an intensive week where you will meet fellow students and experience the four core disciplines of the programme, while acquiring intensive training on your research skills. During the following weeks you will work in interdisciplinary teams on an assignment centered around the theme Sustainability.

Within the Interdisciplinary Innovation Assignments you will work on real-life complex issues from the professional field. It includes a dynamic combination of co-creation with fellow-students and the professional field, academic depth provided by (guest) lectures and professorships, and an evidence-based approach with insights from different disciplinary perspectives. Both (guest) lectures from experts in the field and the Community of Learners will support you throughout the Master programme. Your knowledge development is enhanced by the six ample themes and accompanying topics, that encompass the core disciplines of the Master programme: Marketing, Finance, Human Resource Management and Business & IT:

  • Sustainability: e.g. Corporate Social Responsibility, Cooperatives & Democracy
