This cutting-edge programme offers an exciting opportunity to study modern neuroscience with a focus on clinical implications. You will gain a strong foundation in understanding the mechanisms and treatments of neurological and neuropsychiatric diseases.

This course is designed for students from a range of backgrounds, who are interested in pursuing a career in neuroscience. You will develop a detailed understanding of modern theory and concepts relating to brain research and neuroscience and the application of these principles in the treatment of brain disorders. This course places emphasis on the clinical relevance of recent developments in neuroscience.

The development of your research methods skills is an integral part of the course. You will further your understanding of applied neuroscience with a research project which will develop your data handling and analysis skills, use of applied theory and statistics.

You will join the Health Sciences Research Centre whose academics are currently investigating a range of topical issues such as the addictive nature of new psychoactive substances, effects of stress on the brain regulatory systems and the mechanisms of brain cell death and repair using neural stem cells. You will be welcome to attend research seminars and discussions on topical developments in neuroscience and health sciences, led by experts.

MSc Clinical Neuroscience is recognised by the Federation of Neuroscience Societies (FENS) and included in the Network of European Neuroscience Schools (NENS), which is the highest accolade in European neuroscience teaching.

Content

In this postgraduate programme, you will develop an integrated overview of contemporary neuroscience as a rapidly developing discipline with multiple links with molecular biology, genetics, pharmacology and medical sciences.

You will be introduced to a diverse range of topics and will have the chance to focus on areas that interest you. Examples of topics that you might cover include: clinical relevance of recent developments in neuroscience, brain imaging techniques and their applications in neurology and psychiatry, neurobiological mechanisms of human brain disorders, effects of nutrition and addiction on brain function, and research methods.

You will discuss ethical issues in clinical neuroscience and develop your ability to critically evaluate current developments in clinical brain research, which are relevant to healthcare.

This course can accommodate students from a range of backgrounds including new graduates from life sciences or psychology as well as health professionals who hold non-traditional qualifications. The programme options of PG Diploma or PG Certificate can be useful to health professionals who wish to refresh update theory knowledge without the commitment of conducting a research project (MSc). It is also suitable for applicants from the NHS, for example neuro-nurses or therapists.

Summary

Gain the essential skillsets as a nutritionist to help improve people’s health and well-being in the context of the malnutrition, obesity, metabolic response to injury and chronic disease.

This was the first MSc in Clinical Nutrition to be established in the UK and has gained an international reputation, attracting students from around the world. You will consider the patient’s journey from birth to extreme age in the context of the metabolic response to injury or to chronic disease. The course is designed for all members of nutrition support teams and is also suitable for students who wish to pursue clinically-based nutrition research.

After establishing a firm foundation in physiology and the biochemistry of nutrition, this course will cover the nutritional management for clinical conditions such as gastro-enteral problems, long-term disablement and intensive care. It also includes a focus on nutrition support in paediatric, adult, older adult and critically ill patients.

This course is perfect for nutrition support teams or those who want to pursue a career or a doctorate in clinically-based nutrition. The course will provide an important insight into contemporary developments in clinical nutrition for a wide range of healthcare professionals.

You will have access to our state-of-the art facilities and excellent laboratories including a food lab complete with sensory analysis tasting booths and specialist laboratories for physiology, microbiology and computing.

Please note this programme does not lead to a qualification in the UK as a registered Dietitian. It is an accredited course with the Association for Nutrition, and does enable you to become a registered nutritionist, once you have complete two years in the nutrition field.

Content

We offer a diverse range of modules to build your knowledge and enable you to focus on topics that interest you. Recent examples of these topics have included: macronutrient and micronutrient metabolism in health and disease, nutrient digestion and absorption and gastrointestinal disease, nutritional support in paediatric, adult, older adult and critically ill patients, the effect of disease on nutrition status.

Research areas that are also included in the programme are dietary management strategies in women with polycystic ovary syndrome; the role of brain–gut interaction in obesity, eating disorders, and irritable bowel syndrome; the role of the enteric nervous system in known intestinal diseases; vitamin E status in health and disease; the role of microbiota in food and nutritional systems; food bioactives for a healthy gut, brain and vascular system; the regulation of insulin secretion and glucose metabolism in health and diabetes.

Summary

Our programme equips you for a career in sport, exercise and clinical biomechanics. You will gain in-depth knowledge into how theoretical biomechanics can be applied to the understanding and development of movement for sport, exercise and clinical applications.

Our MSc in Biomechanics will enable you to support the physical development and health of sports people engaged in intensive training and exercise. This programme critically examines the theoretical basis of methods of assessment and the practical application of data within biomechanics. It offers you a means of studying biomechanics from a discipline-specific standpoint.

You will be taught by staff who are committed to pursue excellence in the field of sport, exercise and health sciences and have achieved a high level of expertise within their profession.

The Sport and Exercise Research Centre houses one of the best sport science laboratory facilities in London. You will have access to our biomechanics laboratory and physiology laboratory during your study here.

You will be able to collaborate with our members of the Sport and Exercise Science Research Centre engaged in range of multidisciplinary research themes including: Neuromusculoskeletal Function through the Ages; Extreme Environments; Amputee Mobility; Performance and Well-Being; and Exercise Adherence and Health.

Roehampton has over twenty-five years' experience of teaching Sport Science and has run Masters level Sport Science programmes since 1997. Over this time, we have constantly embraced changes in the profession and utilised student feedback to ensure that our programmes are relevant, inspiring and provided to the high standards.

Content

You will study modules that provide both the theory and hands-on application in areas such as biomechanical assessment/support techniques, neuromuscular function, and biomechanics of gait. The teaching in these modules is both in-depth and highly practical, with extensive use of laboratory facilities such as Vicon 3D motion capture system, 2D video analysis, Kistler force plates, isokinetic dynamometers, ultrasound scanners, electromyography, and neuromuscular electrical stimulator.

You will also have the opportunity to gain two weeks work placement in gait laboratories of Guys and St Thomas’s Hospital and Queen Mary’s Hospital. Through this placement our previous graduates have developed their clinical gait analysis skills and have enhanced their employability within the field of Biomechanics.

In your research dissertation, you will have the opportunity to perform focused research in a project to be developed with our staff member with the view for publication in a peer-reviewed journal.
