Overview

This programme has been designed to enhance the specialist knowledge and skills of graduates who have already undertaken substantial accounting and finance studies at undergraduate degree level. Alternatively, if you have successfully achieved all of the ACCA Fundamental level papers you are eligible to apply.

The programme covers a number of core themes including International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS), corporate reporting, corporate governance and risk management. Professional ethics, alongside the application of tools and models of finance theory to complex strategic corporate finance transactions are central to the programme. In addition, you will develop knowledge in implementing strategy in the context of both the external environment and internal business capabilities, and be able to evaluate performance implications of a given strategy.

International Corporate Reporting and Governance - The international corporate reporting aspect of the unit considers the impact of International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) on corporate reports across a number of different business situations and considers the impact of the move to harmonisation of accounting standards globally. The governance aspect of the course will cover governance, risk and ethics and their inter-relationship.

Corporate Finance and Strategy – This unit will develop the knowledge and skills used in designing and implementing business strategy in the context of the external environment and internal capabilities.

Investigating Business Practice - You will work on a live business problem, from the setting of objectives through to the production and presentation of recommendations for a business audience. This is an investigative unit that enables students to synthesise theoretical knowledge with practical application and supports the development of professional and employability skills.

Part-time students entering the PG Diploma or MSc will normally study one day per week, to complete 60 credits per year as required for the award. An exit award of PG Certificate is available to students exiting after completion of 60 credits. This must include at least 15 credits of Audiology specific units, from those available. A maximum of 30 credits of individual course units can also be studied on a 'stand-alone' basis.

Bioinformatics has been an identifiable discipline for more than a decade, driven by the computational demands of high volumes of biological data. It incorporates both the development and application of algorithms to decipher biological relationships. Enormous success has been achieved, for example in defining homologous families of sequences at the DNA, RNA, and protein levels. However, our appreciation of function is changing rapidly as experimental analysis scales up to cellular and organismal viewpoints. The Masters course in Biomaterials is multi-disciplinary. It provides students with a rich understanding of about current clinically used biomaterials and state of the art advances in research to improve these. The clinical application of these biomaterials will be demonstrated along with indepth description of materials structure and processing (e.g. polymer, composite and ceramic). The project component will allow hands-on training for the student in further developing novel biomaterials.

Semester 1 (Sept - Dec):

Research Methods course unit (15 credits); Lectures and workshops detailing transferable skills such as project management, time management, essay writing, oral presentation.

Master Class Course Unit (15 credits); Lectures specific to biomaterials design, characterization, manufacture and characterization. Lectures on use of stem cells with biomaterials and tissue engineering applications also included.

Structure & Mechanical Properties of Polymers (15 credits); Module covers masters level detail of polymer technology.

Clinical Applications of Biomaterials (15 credits); lectures series detailing current clinical applications of biomaterials. The module also covers a case study exercise.

Semester 2 (Jan - May):

Composite Materials (15 credits); students will learn about composite material design and implementation for biomaterials.

Tutorial course unit (15 credits); Orientation meetings. Preparative directed reading, private study and preparation of oral presentation. Pre-tutorial meeting. Tutorial. Journal study of `Biomaterials'.

Teaching Seminars (15 credits); Seminars on state of the art biomaterial research presented by invited internationally renowned speakers. Private study and preparation of written assignment.

Nanobiomaterials (15 credits); lecture series on nanobiomaterials manufacture, characterization and use as biomaterials

Summer (June - Sept): Research project (60 credits); 16week research project studying specific biomaterials design or characterisation. Student will have specifically allocated supervisor to provide training in biomaterials. Assessment: Oral presentation and write up: Research aims, hypothesis, Gantt chart, milestones, Write up project in form of journal publication for `Biomaterials' journal.

The subject
The subject of biomedical materials covers those materials that are used in the context of biology and medicine, usually to evaluate, treat, augment or replace any tissue, organ or function of the body. In surgery, a biomaterial may be a synthetic material used to replace part of a living system or to function in intimate contact with living tissue.

A new area in biomaterials involves the exploration of nanotechnology for drug delivery, biological sensing or tissue regeneration. Examples of these bionanomaterials are small particles that may be used for the delivery of drug molecules to target sites within the body or to detect diseased areas.

Biomaterials are produced using chemical, physical, mechanical processes and they often employ or mimic biological phenomena in order for them to interact with their biological surroundings in defined ways..

Application of research
The clinical applications of our research impact many areas of medicine, including drug delivery, cancer, wound healing, stem cell technology, repair and regeneration of nerve, tendon, cartilage, bone, intevertebral disc, skin, ligament and cornea.

Proliferation is tightly regulated in normal cells so that it is balanced with differentiation in adults. Mutations in different genes can result in cells undergoing uncontrolled growth so that ultimately tumours are formed. The MSc in Cancer Research and Molecular Biomedicine will give you thorough training in this subject area with opportunities to undertake research placements in the labs of leading researchers working on various processes relating to tumourigenesis such as: understanding cell cycle control mechanisms and how they are disrupted in the formation of a tumour. Investigating the cell fate choices of normal cells, and how these differ in cancer cells. Investigating how cell signals regulate gene expression in different types of cells, and how this flow of information is compromised in cancer cells. If you wish to broaden your expertise beyond the area of molecular cancer research you can chose to undertake a research placement in another area of molecular biomedicine. We investigate the mechanisms underlying a range of diseases including; hypertension, arthritis, Alzheimer's disease and diabetes.
