This is a creative, project-based course focusing on the practical and theoretical study of product design and its relationship to interaction. As an advanced product designer, this course supports your continued development and will refine your practice in interaction and user-centred product design.

The course explores academic theories as well as industry practice within interactive media, digital arts, entertainment and product design; and is a combination of two separate fields: product design and interactive media.

In Interactive Product Futures you will focus on user-centred design processes and research and analyse “user interaction” as your primary focus. The emphasis is on technology-mediated communication between humans and objects or spaces, allowing you to apply design and apply technological solutions to people’s infinite needs. You will also examine how technology gives personality to objects, and thereby how to ensure technology and design are more empathetic to people and their behaviours.

In the early units of the course you will be given short project briefs in which to design, implement, test and evaluate solutions in the form of an interactive product. Each project brief may take the form of an online or offline product; for example: an online quiz, an e-commerce type application, a toy. This is also an opportunity to produce a series of creative works within the specialisation of rapid prototyping (3D printing), animation, game design, web design, installation art, projection mapping, creative coding, computation design and entertainment media. The aim is to provide you with the opportunity to develop a software solution to a given problem, or aspect of a larger problem.

You will be encouraged to experiment with new ways of working with objects/scenarios and their integration with technology both creatively and collaboratively, and to apply emerging and existing technological solutions through personal fabrication, research and the experimental application of technology.

The course promotes cross disciplinary thinking as an approach to product design, so that the relationship between interactivity, artefacts, environments and the systems and organisations in which they operate can be re-examined.

By studying the course you will develop your creative design skills to innovate and influence product and interaction design practice and realise the commercial potential of your design proposals.

Through the Business and Innovation unit you will have the opportunity to explore the generation of innovative new business models that will help to shape your emerging project concept.

Through the Research Process unit, you will explore academic theoretical frameworks and research methodologies and their application within industry practice.

The MA route allows students to refine a critical approach to creativity in areas such as writing, directing, and producing; the MSc focuses on creative technological agendas in areas such as cinematography, editing, and VFX. They explore the scientific issues underlying dance performance, technical training, and dancer health and injury prevention, looking at ways to optimise the body's performance, improve training techniques and enhance performer potential.

Format

Our carefully devised programmes examine qualitative and quantitative aspects of dance practice through a range of scientific disciplines. Application of theory to dance practice is essential at Trinity Laban, and Dance Science is no exception. Sessions frequently take place in the dance studio or involve practical and hands-on experience with testing equipment in the lab.

Dance Science can be undertaken as an MSc (one year) or, in a programme new this year, as an MFA (two years), with the second year dedicated to research. NB: Participants on the MSc programme can transfer to the MFA programme subject to application, and this should be discussed with the Programme Leader before completion of the 4 taught modules.

Year One (MSc and MFA)

Implementing this technology is essential in today's global marketplace, where survival relies on being first to market.

The course covers a range of topics from 3D solid modelling and the techniques required to extend the capabilities of a 3D modelling system to gaining practical and theoretical knowledge of analytical computer tools by using finite element analysis (FEA) techniques. It also examines the importance of modern materials in advanced manufacturing processes, as well as computer-aided manufacturing (CAM) and application of rapid prototyping technologies. Additionally, the programme enables you to gain the entrepreneurship, management and business skills necessary to take on leadership roles in major product design engineering projects.

The project dissertation challenges you to investigate a theoretical area in depth and also to undertake a real-world product design problem-solving project.

Work placement scheme

Kingston University has set up a scheme that allows postgraduate students in the Faculty of Science, Engineering and Computing to include a work placement element in their course starting from September 2017. The placement scheme is available for both international and home/EU students.
-The work placement, up to 12 months; is optional.
-The work placement takes place after postgraduate students have successfully completed the taught portion of their degree.
-The responsibility for finding the placement is with the student. We cannot guarantee the placement, just the opportunity to undertake it.
-As the work placement is an assessed part of the course for international students, this is covered by a student's tier 4 visa.

Research Skills (15 credits)

This module provides you with the core skills needed to become a successful researcher. This is achieved via two complementary strands; the first strand covers fundamental research skills: seminars on bibliographic searching, essay writing, research report writing, oral presentation skills and career planning and lab sessions in which students conduct, analyse and write up an experiment from the field of music psychology. The second strand exposes students to cutting edge research in the field of music cognition and neuroscience via the Eminent Speaker Series and involves the opportunity to produce a collaborative report from the series for the Music, Mind and brain blog.

Research Project (60 credits)

This module provides you with the chance to design and pursue a substantial, independent research project on a topic of their choosing, with expert input from a nominated supervisor. You will be offered a selection of possible projects but are also encouraged to generate their own ideas. External supervision may also possible, in cases where students have links to outside institutions. As well as producing a written dissertation, you will have take produce and present a poster of your work to classmates and teachers from the programme.

The programme will appeal to you if you are interested in pursuing doctoral research in this area or if you are already a music professional wishing to approach music scientifically.

Degree information

The Performing Arts Medicine MSc at UCL is a unique programme providing specialised training to those interested or already involved in offering health services to this very special sector of instrumental musicians, singers, dancers, actors and other performing artists.

Degree information

The MSc and diploma cover musculoskeletal injury, performance psychology, pain management, assessment and rehabilitation, disability, travelling and touring, dance and music performance science, management of the professional voice and research methodology. MSc students also engage in a research project and dissertation. The certificate is a limited curriculum version for non-clinicians or clinicians who wish to upgrade at a later time.

Students undertake modules to the value of 180 credits. The MSc programme consists of eight core modules (120 credits) and the research project (60 credits). A Postgraduate Diploma (eight core modules, 120 credits) A Postgraduate Certificate (four core modules, 60 credits). There are no optional modules for this degree.

Dissertation/research project
All MSc students undertake a research project which culminates in a dissertation of approximately 6,000–7,000 words, a presentation and a viva.

Teaching and learning
The delivery of the programme is through lectures, tutorials or workshops. Performing arts clinics and performance settings when possible are also included in the programme. Details about the lecturers and tutors can be found here.

Assessment is through coursework, written examinations and objective structured clinical examinations (OSCEs).

Graduates gain in-depth knowledge of the diverse field of performing arts medicine. Their specialised skills can be incorporated in their own professional practice or they can participate in performing arts clinics in various settings e.g. conservatoires, orchestras, music or dance colleges.

Within the Technology Issues unit, you will engage with three project cycles that will allow you to explore the technologies most relevant to your discipline area. Typical past projects have included an industry collaboration project with a camera technology support company (such as digital motion capture in a ‘live’ 3D environment); an individual project in which each student explained a ‘digital broadcast’ model (such as a short film or media-share environment); and a cross- disciplinary project with visual effects students.

In the Business Innovation unit, you will develop an understanding of business and innovative practices in the creative industries.

The Research Process unit will provide the grounding for research and development skills needed for your individual project.

The Concept and Prototyping unit allows you to further develop your skills to take a single line of inquiry, idea or theory embedded in broadcast futures and research and develop (investigate, challenge and test) the concept.

The Major Project represents the culmination of your investigation and the final stage of the research strategy. This is a substantial piece of self-managed work that is underpinned by advanced practice-based methodologies and processes.

Your dissertation takes the form of Work Placement Report and Catalogue of an auction consignment. This will enable you to bring together all three areas of your programme of study: Art History, Law and Business Practice in a single piece of work.

This course offers a unique opportunity for students to gain understanding and use of digital media design and technologies for the purpose of branding. This programme aims to fill a gap by developing the knowledge and practical experience of both digital design and branding concepts.

Digital Branding Strategy
The main aim of this module is provide students with understanding and skills to (i) develop a strategic approach to branding and its relationship to digital design and organisational performance, (ii) to evaluate the current state of the relationship of branding to digital design, digital promotion and management and (iii) to build future scenarios in response to new trends.

Multimedia Research Directions
The module will introduce concepts of different types of research, present methods to identify research topic and formulate approach, prepare plan for research and provide guidance on performing research experiments and evaluating novel systems and artefacts. In this module internationally renowned researchers and practitioners in creative media design will be invited to speak in seminars to the MSc students.

Digital Promotion
In this module students will study digital promotion media and means, with the focus on creative execution: Social Media Marketing, Online Advertising, Public Relations, E-mail marketing, etc; case study of successful digital campaigns and businesses.

Digital Design
The aim of this module is to provide theoretical and practical skills of digital design in the context of creative digital branding; graphic design, layout, typography, etc; the module to include a practical design project.

Digital Media Technologies
This module offers understanding and appreciation of the various digital media technologies in the context of creative digital branding.

Advanced 3D Technologies
The aim of this module to cover advanced 3D and associated technologies including, generative 3D modelling, real-time graphics, animation and human movement and machine acquisition techniques. Complex forms will be visualized, simulated and tested on screen. The module will also explore the latest developments in rapid prototyping virtual reality and other forms of visualization.

Multimedia and Interaction Design
The aim of this module is to demonstrate advanced knowledge and understanding of state-of-the-art technologies revolving around the various interactive possibilities with digital media in the academic and commercial worlds. Audio Visual Post Production

This postgraduate degree course is positioned and seeks to assist you to engage with the huge wave of interest in the open source communities surrounding the coding developments such as openFrameworks, Arduino, Processing and Cinder. These freely available libraries of code and hardware bring the power of computing and interaction to a much wider base of creative users and you will immediately see the imaginative potential that they offer. Instruction in visual programming with Max/Msp, Pure Data and VVV may also be offered.

You will be shown examples of projects that make use of such devices such as the Kinect, Leap Motion and motion capture. Project work will offer opportunities to put this knowledge into practice in order to propose inventive solutions that respond to the movement of the human figure. The combination of data drawn from the position of the figure and a three dimensional virtual environment has opened up a fascinating discussion about the nature of human choreographic gesture and the way it can have a simultaneous effect both in the digital and real world domains. Quadrocopters, robotics and the control of kinetic movements will come within the research focus of the course offering you a wide variety of possible outcomes.

Ravensbourne has a very well resourced rapid prototyping facility and students on the MA/MSC Computational Design will have the opportunity to combine programming, three dimensional design and electronics to as a basis for proposing innovative, responsive and exciting projects.

You will begin to work with user response and feedback and place your project work in exciting venues such as the Kinetica Art Fair and Level39 Canary Wharf. This will give you great ways to prove your concepts in response to user testing and feedback. The course will cover a variety of approaches to programming and encourage exploration into the nature of code as a medium in its own right. You will become familiar with generative, recursive and algorithmic concepts in problem solving and gain an understanding of the history of coding and its influence and scope.

With this kind of experience behind you, when you leave the course, you will be in a position to take responsible roles such as production supervisor, technical director, lead or assistant programmer, user experience designer, producer or freelance consultant.
