The programme seeks to develop students' creative abilities to a high professional standard, preparing them for employment in increasingly dynamic film and media sectors, and to facilitate film projects that foreground the importance of practice-based research, expertise and experimentation.

The MA route allows students to refine a critical approach to creativity in areas such as writing, directing, and producing; the MSc focuses on creative technological agendas in areas such as cinematography, editing, and VFX. They explore the scientific issues underlying dance performance, technical training, and dancer health and injury prevention, looking at ways to optimise the body's performance, improve training techniques and enhance performer potential.

Format

Our carefully devised programmes examine qualitative and quantitative aspects of dance practice through a range of scientific disciplines. Application of theory to dance practice is essential at Trinity Laban, and Dance Science is no exception. Sessions frequently take place in the dance studio or involve practical and hands-on experience with testing equipment in the lab.

Dance Science can be undertaken as an MSc (one year) or, in a programme new this year, as an MFA (two years), with the second year dedicated to research. NB: Participants on the MSc programme can transfer to the MFA programme subject to application, and this should be discussed with the Programme Leader before completion of the 4 taught modules.

Year One (MSc and MFA)

This programme is structured to provide you with the latest developments in this still-evolving discipline, and focuses on providing you with hands-on experience of the latest computing applications throughout the entire product development cycle. The course covers a range of topics from 3D solid modelling and the techniques required to extend the capabilities of a 3D modelling system to gaining practical and theoretical knowledge of analytical computer tools by using finite element analysis (FEA) techniques. It also examines the importance of modern materials in advanced manufacturing processes, as well as computer-aided manufacturing (CAM) and application of rapid prototyping technologies. Additionally, the programme enables you to gain the entrepreneurship, management and business skills necessary to take on leadership roles in major product design engineering projects.

The project dissertation challenges you to investigate a theoretical area in depth and also to undertake a real-world product design problem-solving project.

Work placement scheme

Kingston University has set up a scheme that allows postgraduate students in the Faculty of Science, Engineering and Computing to include a work placement element in their course starting from September 2017. The placement scheme is available for both international and home/EU students.
-The work placement, up to 12 months; is optional.
-The work placement takes place after postgraduate students have successfully completed the taught portion of their degree.
-The responsibility for finding the placement is with the student. We cannot guarantee the placement, just the opportunity to undertake it.
-As the work placement is an assessed part of the course for international students, this is covered by a student's tier 4 visa.

Research Skills (15 credits)

This module provides you with the core skills needed to become a successful researcher. This is achieved via two complementary strands; the first strand covers fundamental research skills: seminars on bibliographic searching, essay writing, research report writing, oral presentation skills and career planning and lab sessions in which students conduct, analyse and write up an experiment from the field of music psychology. The second strand exposes students to cutting edge research in the field of music cognition and neuroscience via the Eminent Speaker Series and involves the opportunity to produce a collaborative report from the series for the Music, Mind and brain blog.

Research Project (60 credits)

This module provides you with the chance to design and pursue a substantial, independent research project on a topic of their choosing, with expert input from a nominated supervisor. You will be offered a selection of possible projects but are also encouraged to generate their own ideas. External supervision may also possible, in cases where students have links to outside institutions. As well as producing a written dissertation, you will have take produce and present a poster of your work to classmates and teachers from the programme.

The MSc in Integrated Product Design course focuses on the design of innovative products, emphasising the balance between the interest of users, industry and society. It covers the whole design process, integrating all aspects relevant to product development, in particular global new product design.

It meets industrial demand by integrating technology, management, aesthetics, environmental sustainability, ergonomics, marketing, business and design methods – to produce highly qualified and sought after designers able to cope with the challenges the global economy presents.

Specifically, the course aims to:

Provide an integrated programme of study across a broad range of knowledge and skills in product/industrial design
Develop design and technology research skills related to the design process through practicing applied research

The course provides an integrated approach and promotes advanced studies in design theory, creativity and aesthetics, innovation methods, advanced design techniques, human factors and applied ergonomics, engineering, material and production science, sustainability and research methods.

Course Content

The first term includes three taught modules worth a total of 45 credits plus one double module of 30 credits which continues into the second term alongside three further modules. The thick module, Professional Design Studio, will include guest lectures, research seminars and group or individual project. The projects can be based on design research or product/industrial design.

The ‘Design Futures’ module will introduce the importance and potential value of future foresight techniques and develop a vision of the future and critically evaluate its implications for design, innovation and enabling technology.

The ‘Computer Aided Design and Manufacturing Techniques’ module will introduce CAD and graphics based design modelling, rendering techniques and tools, product design simulation techniques and tools, rapid prototyping and manufacturing techniques.

For the final four months of the programme (June to September), students can either continue their projects to greater depth as their dissertation project, or undertake a new subject. Students are encouraged to form industrial links as part of this project.

The Performing Arts Medicine MSc at UCL is a unique programme providing specialised training to those interested or already involved in offering health services to this very special sector of instrumental musicians, singers, dancers, actors and other performing artists.

Degree information

The MSc and diploma cover musculoskeletal injury, performance psychology, pain management, assessment and rehabilitation, disability, travelling and touring, dance and music performance science, management of the professional voice and research methodology. MSc students also engage in a research project and dissertation. The certificate is a limited curriculum version for non-clinicians or clinicians who wish to upgrade at a later time.

Students undertake modules to the value of 180 credits. The MSc programme consists of eight core modules (120 credits) and the research project (60 credits). A Postgraduate Diploma (eight core modules, 120 credits) A Postgraduate Certificate (four core modules, 60 credits). There are no optional modules for this degree.

Dissertation/research project
All MSc students undertake a research project which culminates in a dissertation of approximately 6,000–7,000 words, a presentation and a viva.

Teaching and learning
The delivery of the programme is through lectures, tutorials or workshops. Performing arts clinics and performance settings when possible are also included in the programme. Details about the lecturers and tutors can be found here.

Assessment is through coursework, written examinations and objective structured clinical examinations (OSCEs).

Careers

Graduates gain in-depth knowledge of the diverse field of performing arts medicine. Their specialised skills can be incorporated in their own professional practice or they can participate in performing arts clinics in various settings e.g. conservatoires, orchestras, music or dance colleges.

Graduates' knowledge and experience is valued and they may be invited as educators and trainers in performing arts medicine and will become members of an ever-growing medical community with common interest in the wellbeing of the performer.

Graduates who have aspirations for further academic study and research activity, such as progressing to PhD, will receive appropriate guidance.

Assessing a performing artist requires specialised skills and the ability to associate health issues with the particular artistic activity. You will participate in core lecture programmes in the History of Art leading to a summative examination. This course is complemented by a seminar in the History and Theory of Art and Culture. You will experience Law through lectures and seminars delivered by professional practitioners and you will complete case studies for yourself. For the duration of the course, you will also actively participate to the life of a department within Christie’s. Your experience of the Auction Business through this placement will be augmented by visits to at least three key international Art Fairs and events (such as FIAC Paris, TEFAF Maastricht and Art Basel Hong Kong), to enable you to explore the art world in a variety of contexts.

Your dissertation takes the form of Work Placement Report and Catalogue of an auction consignment. This will enable you to bring together all three areas of your programme of study: Art History, Law and Business Practice in a single piece of work.

The programme is full time and runs over a period of two calendar years. GID Master's candidates on the joint RCA/Imperial College programme begin their course in London for two terms developing their visions and a body of work which will be thematically and regionally developed throughout the next year and a half.

They have the opportunity to study on the New York/Tokyo route or the Beijing/Singapore route during their first and second years. They then return to London for the final two terms of their graduation year. Graduates from the programme are expected to be central to innovation leadership in the twenty-first century. 

Philosophically, GID challenges designers to ask who they are and what is most important to them; as authors of material culture they are asked what kind of world do they wish to create, and what contributions will they make. The MSc in Sound and Music Computing responds to a growing skills shortage in industry for engineers and computer scientists trained specifically in sound and music processing, as digital media become ever more advanced and ubiquitous.

Developed by the acclaimed Centre for Digital Music (C4DM), this programme offers you a broad range of study options in methods of processing, analysis, synthesis and manipulation of musical signals. You will develop the knowledge and skills required for careers in the technical aspects of audio production, sound engineering, broadcasting, intelligent signal processing, computational music analysis, music information retrieval and other areas of sound and music computing. You will acquire an in-depth understanding of data analysis and signal processing techniques related to human speech and hearing, psychoacoustics and masking, and instrument and room acoustics.

The MSc is intended for graduates in a related discipline, who wish to hone and enhance their skills, and for industrialists with experience of sound and music computing, seeking formal qualifications. The taught modules are fully supported with computing and laboratory work.

You will graduate with an understanding of how today's audio and music technology works, possessing the potential to become a pioneer in developing future generations of leading edge music technologies.

This programme will:

Allow you to shape your own programme, by selecting two optional modules per semester to complement the core modules in Sound and Music Computing.
