Through the ethos of research-led teaching, our MSc in Advanced Biological Sciences will provide you with an innovative and rewarding experience within an excellent environment of state-of-the-art research laboratories, cutting-edge provision for proteomics, genomics, advanced genome sequencing and analysis, a cell imaging suite, transgenic plants facility and an NMR centre for protein structure analysis.

Molecular biology and genomics play an increasingly important and exciting role in research on medically important parasites and arthropods, and this award provides advanced training in this field. It provides an important foundation of knowledge of the basic biology of parasites and vectors, followed by specialised modules on the molecular and cellular biology and functional genomics of parasites and vectors, as well as related public health, and tropical health issues. There is a significant practical component throughout the programme, and the laboratory work undertaken provides a wide range of techniques that would be highly relevant to a future research career. Following the taught component, participants complete a dissertation including a period of applied research either overseas or in Liverpool.

AIMS

LSTM education courses are taught within a dynamic environment by staff working at the cutting-edge of research in tropical medicine and global health. They are designed to enable the professional development of the student, to be relevant to students from both the UK and overseas and to promote approaches to study that will enable students to continue their learning into the future. 

This course aims to:

Many alumni of LSTM hold prominent positions in health ministries, universities, hospitals, and international organisations throughout the world. Graduates are competitively placed to begin PhD programmes, seek employment as research assistants, work in developing countries with a wide variety of employers, or return to previous employers with enhanced knowledge and skills with which to advance their existing careers. Graduates of the MSc Molecular Biology of Parasites and Disease Vectors have undergone excellent general preparation for a career in laboratory research in biological sciences, in which molecular biology is widely applied, and are particularly well placed for careers in research or training in areas related to the molecular biology of parasitic and vector-borne tropical diseases.

Human impacts on the environment have never been greater. As we approach the 6th mass extinction of species and face the prospect of global climate change, we are just beginning to realize how much we depend on ecosystems to provide us with services such as food, water, clean air, waste disposal and fibre. There has never been a more exciting time to study conservation biology and resource management. Our one-year programmes train students to an advanced level in conservation science and resource management, enabling them to become conservation professionals in research or the government, non-governmental organization, and consultancy sectors.

This is inevitably an inter-disciplinary subject. Our programmes benefit from the wide experience of teachers in the Schools of Environmental and Biological Sciences, with backgrounds in disciplines including conservation biology, ecology (including marine and population ecology), genetics, environmental planning, ocean science, management, law, and geography. Developed to plug a skills gap identified by the Liverpool Enterprise Partnership and associated multi-national businesses, this programme balances theoretical learning and practical skills.

You can study for your MSc full time (one year) or part time (two years). As a full time student you will spend roughly two thirds of your time in timetabled sessions (26 hours a week, over three days) with the remainder of your time devoted to independent study.

The taught element of the programme runs from October to April. Following this, you will go on to carry out a novel, independent piece of research in May and June.
At the beginning of your course you will be allocated a personal tutor who will provide you with pastoral and academic support.

Further academic support is provided via embedded tutorials in the Research Methods module. During your independent research project, you will be appointed a LJMU-based supervisor as well as an industrial supervisor if you are carrying out your project externally.

This Industrial Biotechnology Masters is based at the Byrom Street site of the University’s City Campus, which is equipped with new state-of-the-art laboratories housing a range of advanced analytical and imaging equipment to support biotechnology.

Modules are designed to reflect staff research and professional expertise, and advance student’s professional and academic development. Students are supported to become accomplished independent researchers. On graduation they are expected to be highly employable in the area of ecology and environmental management.

The University is seeking professional accreditation for the MSc Ecology and Environmental Management, and hopes to achieve this before the end of academic year 2015/16.

The Department of Geography and Environmental Management hosts not only the MSc Ecology and Environmental Management, but also the internationally renowned ‘Sand Dune and Shingle Network’. The aim of the Network is to conserve these threatened habitats as dynamic landscapes. The Network supports field trips, research projects and placements for students on the MSc. Curriculum

Principles and theories of ecology and environmental management (20 credits) - This module outlines and critically reviews the principles and theories of ecology and environmental management, including sustainability, and examines decision-making tools in environmental management including environmental assessment. Key concepts important for subsequent modules will be addressed. A field-based case study approach is used to investigate theories and principles in practice.

Research methods for ecology and environmental Management (20 credits) - This module provides students with the skills required to plan, undertake and communicate a Masters research project. The transferable skills covered include, for example: experimental design and analysis, GIS, academic writing, oral presentation skills and project management.

Biodiversity conservation (20 credits) - This module provides students with an in depth and critical understanding of the importance and urgency of biodiversity conservation. Using fieldwork and desk-top studies, students will develop a conservation site management plan for the benefit of biodiversity.

Coastal ecology, change and management (20 credits) - This module develops student’s critical understanding of one of the world’s most threatened environments – the coast. Using the UK as a geographic focus, coastal ecology, change and management are explored with a particular emphasis on coastal dunes and shingle. This module will include fieldwork which may be residential and international.

Field survey (20 credits) - Following the introductory lectures, this module is field based with normally a minimum of 5 days residential fieldwork, along with non-residential day/evening trips. The module allows students to develop their skills of investigative ecology in the field.

Professional skills for ecology and environmental management (10 credits) - This module develops the personal, academic and professional skills required by students operating in the areas of ecology and environmental management. Through small group teaching and individual tutorials the module works towards a focus on the CPD and personal development needs of students.

Professional practice for ecologists and environmental managers (10 credits) - This module develops the professional practice required by students operating in the areas of ecology and environmental management. It addresses the expected standards in research and professional practice, with recognition of the ethical considerations and obligations to the environment and to society. The module is delivered on a tutorial based model.

Research project (60 credits) - The research project module involves the design, execution and critical evaluation of an approved research topic and the presentation of the research in the form of a dissertation or professional report.

Bioarchaeology is an exciting and fast-advancing science that combines archaeology with branches of the natural sciences. Study focuses on the key topics pertaining to human remains from archaeological sites.

Bioarchaeology includes areas of scientific investigation including palaeodemography, past behaviour, biological affinity, subsistence strategy, and health and well-being in the past.

The MSc in Bioarchaeology will help you to develop a broad understanding of these issues, through the excavation and analysis of human and animal remains. Analytical techniques will cover dental and osteological analyses, archaeological field methods, and ancient genetics.

Advanced Osteology and Skeletal Pathology
Provides students with an advanced knowledge of the human skeleton and the ability to identify animal bones, methods of curation of skeletal collections and understanding of pathological modifications.
Research Design and Quantitative Methods
Provides extensive training in generic research knowledge and statistical techniques for the Natural Sciences. Students design a research project and are assessed via the preparation of a full grant application for the project.
Dental Anthropology
Provides students with the theoretical knowledge and practical experience required by bioarchaeologists to identify and examine human teeth.
Semester 2 (two core modules and one option)

Bioarchaeology: Bones, Teeth and Genes
Focuses on the different methods used to study human remains in archaeological and anthropological contexts. Delivery is through a combination of lectures, practicals, workshops and seminar sessions by experts in different fields, followed by reading and in-class discussion of recent literature.
Excavation
Covers field survey, site management, excavation and related data analysis. In addition to practicals and lectures, the course includes a non-residential field experience.
Dissertation
Comprises an independent, in-depth scientific research study on a chosen relevant topic. The following options are typically offered:
Ballistics and Arson Investigation
Teaches the fundamental principles of fire science, fire dynamics and material science, enabling students to demonstrate their application of fire investigation.
Taphonomy Trauma Analysis
Provides students with an extensive understanding of the biomechanics of human bones and the reaction of bones to the environment for a taphonomic history of the remains. Students gain a broad appreciation of different types of weapons to reconstruct a traumatic event using skeletal evidence.
Human Identification and Forensic DNA
Analyses the issues related to the identification of an unknown subject from both skeletal and genetic features. The module also introduces students to the use of a DNA typing approach for the identification of human remains.

Biomechanics is the study of the mechanical functioning of the biological system. This course applies biomechanical knowledge in both a sporting and clinical context.

Extensive training is provided in laboratory-based skills and in the interpretation of biomechanical findings and there is comprehensive coverage of contemporary issues in biomechanics.

The course is taught through a mixture of lectures, seminars, tutorial support, practical sessions and workshops which encourage critical, reflective engagement with a range of theoretical and applied topics.

You will also be exposed to a wide range of research questions in biomechanics and learn how to critically appraise and interpret the literature. The diversity of assessment methods, including written coursework and oral viva assessment, are innovative and well received by students.

Technical Training in Biomechanics: provides technical training in laboratory techniques appropriate to sport and clinical biomechanics. It will enable you to develop laboratory skills including 2D, and 3D motion analysis, force analysis and biomechanical modelling so that you can collect and interpret biomechanical measurement and protocols to benchmark standards. The topic is taught in the laboratories in a hands-on, interactive manner.

Research Methods: provides mastery and expertise in quantitative research strategies, methods and techniques, specifically focussed on quantitative data so that you can undertake postgraduate research. It aims to encourage critical understanding of how quantitative data should be handled and analysed using a variety of approaches. The module enables you to develop critical analysis of statistical concepts and procedures, trains you to use statistical analysis software and extend your knowledge of the experimental and research design process.

Current Issues in Biomechanics: develops and extends your opportunity to investigate issues of current importance in Biomechanics. You will be presented with a variety of cutting-edge research topics in biomechanics applied to sport, exercise and clinical applications. You will need to read up-to-date literature in the appropriate fields and to evaluate past and current directions. Laboratory content will involve using measurement skills developed in the Technical Training module to replicate an experimental study from the literature.

Muscle-tendon mechanics: introduces the main biomechanical characteristics of human muscles and tendons and the implications for human movement, performance and biomechanical testing. The mechanical parameters and behaviour of these tissues of the human body in-vivo will also be examined in response to chronic loading and disuse to understand basic, musculoskeletal mechanisms and adaptations underpinning changes in whole-body function and performance.

Biomechanical assessment in sport and exercise: provides the conceptual and practical knowledge base that develops and extends understanding of biomechanical assessment. With continuous developments of equipment, software, and knowledge, there is a growing need for biomechanical assessment in sport and exercise. This has a role both in performance evaluation, in injury prevention, and in injury rehabilitation. You will be exposed to a large variety of tools, each time first gaining a better understanding of the theoretical framework that justifies the use of such tool.

Clinical Movement Analysis: provides the conceptual and practical knowledge base that develops and extends your understanding of clinical movement analysis. You will learn how to interpret gait analysis results in a clinical context through exposure to the current literature, specialised methods, and clinical case studies. You will also be exposed to the latest research developments in the unique area of virtual rehabilitation.

During this programme you will complete a record of competency in physiological assessment, deliver a conference presentation and gain first-hand experience of ‘wet lab’ techniques including western blotting and proteomics.

Fundamental Sport Nutrition

Covers the basics of sport nutrition, including a critical appraisal of the current thoughts with regards to carbohydrate, fat and protein requirements of athletes. The module involves traditional teaching and problem based learning.

Practical Sport Nutrition

As well as gaining professional accreditations in body composition assessment (ISAK), during this module you will be taught the key practical techniques required to work as a sport nutritionist – including diet analysis, assessment of energy expenditure, reflective practice and much more. The module will involve laboratory practicals, as well as classroom based teaching.

Research Skills

To equip you with the skills to perform an independent research project, fundamental research skills and statistical analysis are taught using practical sessions and problem based learning.

Exercise Metabolism

A comprehensive understanding of exercise metabolism is essential to fully understand sport nutrition. This module covers the basics of exercise metabolism, with the role of nutrition clearly embedded in the learning.

Supplements and Drugs in Sport

A sport nutritionist must be able to give accurate and professional advice to athletes with regards to the issues and concerns related to sports supplements. The role of WADA and UKAD will be examined, as well as how to set up safe supplement policies. At the end of the module students are encouraged to sit the free online UKAD anti-doping accreditation which is a requirement of entry onto the SENr register.

Applied Placement

All students engage in a 12 week placement provided by the university. Placements can be in high level sporting clubs such as premier league football or premiership rugby and super league rugby clubs, as well as with local sports clubs. Under mentorship from an experienced LJMU tutor, you will be guided through the process and gain hands-on experience working as a sport nutritionist.

Research Project

All students complete a research project in semester 3. This project can be individual or in small groups and can be on any topic of your choice related to sport nutrition. Some students choose to join current research projects running in the sport nutrition department whilst others prefer to fully design their own project.

You will have the opportunity to work with academic experts, practitioners and other professionals to further your understanding of the complex links between sport, physical activity and mental health and develop expertise in the design and evaluation of programmes intended to promote mental health and wellbeing. You will also examine how mental health may be compromised, as well as enhanced, by participating and working in community and professional sport.

What will I study?

This programme enables you to study the prevalence and determinants of mental health and illness and their association with various forms of inequality. You will analyse how sport and physical activity are commonly used to address mental health and illness, become familiar with how sport and physical activity programmes are designed and evaluated, and explore how these programmes emerge out of local, national and international policy processes and priorities.

Optional modules provide you with the opportunity to study how mental health can be compromised and enhanced at community and/or professional levels of sport and physical activity, in addition to investigating how the mental health needs of different populations can be addressed.

Following an introduction to major research methodologies, methods and approaches, undertaking an independent research dissertation on a topic of your choice will enable you to develop an in-depth understanding of project and people management, how organisations address mental health and illness, and the ethical dilemmas involved in researching mental health in sport and physical activity contexts.

You will be encouraged to inform this project with any insight derived from relevant work experience in sport, physical activity and mental health settings. If you wish to undertake applied work experience to inform your studies, you will be supported to do so by engaging with key partners including Everton in the Community.

How will I study?

The course will be delivered in a variety of ways, including lectures, workshops, student-led seminars and discussions, tutorials, applied work experience, and practitioner-oriented mentoring.

You will typically be required to attend one afternoon/early evening session per week and engage in supported activity (e.g. tutorials) as appropriate.

How will I be assessed?

You will be assessed through a combination of coursework (including essays, policy briefings and reports, and programme evaluations), individual presentations and a research dissertation.
