The Postgraduate Diploma prepares you to function as a specialist practitioner. You would normally be required to undertake the first six core modules listed below in order to achieve this. The MSc Nursing with Registration (Adult) is for graduates from every academic discipline, from Accounting to Zoology, who want to become a qualified adult nurse and gain a master-level qualification.

This is a stimulating and challenging programme, integrating theory and practice in the discipline of nursing. Clinical nursing practice is at the centre of the programme and takes place in a variety of settings in the Leeds area. It includes regional healthcare specialities, such as renal, liver, neurology and cardiac.

You’ll study at the University campus and through our Virtual Learning Environment. You’ll experience a variety of different field-specific clinical placements, including acute and long-term settings, and will care for people in hospital and in the community.

Course content

The first year of the course is designed to introduce you to theoretical knowledge, skills and attitudes required for clinical practice. Underpinning subjects, such as biology, sociology, psychology, communication and the theory and practice of nursing, are taught via a level 3 (degree level) module. You spend time in clinical practice in this year, where you'll develop a number of nursing skills and apply your theoretical knowledge.

Over the next two years of the programme you'll further develop your knowledge and skills, but more specifically in relation to adult nursing. The first module of this year will be at level 3, but all remaining modules will be at Master’s level. You study modules specific to nursing, as well as more generic leadership and research modules. You’ll have access to modern School of Healthcare facilities.

There is the opportunity to study an optional module from a menu centred on either research, advanced practice or management. The optional modules include the opportunity to have an observational placement abroad.

Clinical experience

Clinical experience during the programme will include some weekend and night duty shifts to meet the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) recommendations. Time is also given in the programme for independent study and assessment preparation.

Holidays are allocated for the whole three years to meet University and NMC regulations and cannot be negotiated. We make every effort to link these to school holidays at Christmas, Easter and in August.

Course content

The programme content reflects the increasing demand for focused and in-depth training in specialist areas of diagnostic imaging. It is both research-led and evidence based.

On the PGCert programme you study modules worth 60 or 75 credits.  On the PGDip programme you study modules worth 120 credits. If you study part time you will study fewer modules in each year. On the MSc programme you study modules worth 180 credits. All students study a combination of Science and Technology, Professional Issues and Imaging Practice modules. A wide range of optional modules allow you to tailor your studies to your professional interests.

Some modules listed below contain a number of options. The Professional Work Based Learning module enables you to undertake a work-based project. The Negotiated Imaging Practice module offers a range of options, including: Breast Ultrasound, Cardiac Ultrasound, Musculoskeletal Ultrasound or Vascular Ultrasound.

In addition, we may support alternative areas of clinical practice by negotiation. Successful completion of a CIEH accredited course is the first stage of becoming a Registered Environmental Health Practitioner. You will also need to produce a Portfolio of Professional Practice (PPP) covering all five intervention areas and complete the professional interview. For the PPP you will be required to engage in work-related learning activities. Humans as Occupational Beings
This is the first module in which students learn about the nature of human occupation and how this links with health and well being.

Occupational Therapy Toolbox
In this module students learn about the core skills of occupational therapy; theory, practice and issues related to occupational needs of people in a variety of settings. There is an integrated practice placement in this module.

Contributing to Professional Knowledge 1 & 2
This module runs throughout the two years of the course. Students learn research methods and approaches and conduct their own research project.

Occupation & Health: Individual Perspective
Students revisit occupational therapy practice in this module and focus on how they might work with individuals with a range of conditions and occupational needs. There is an integrated practice placement in this module.

Occupation & Health: Groups & Communities
This focus of this module is how occupational therapy can contribute to the health and well-being of groups and communities nationally and internationally. The practice placement is in a role-emerging setting where they have to demonstrate the unique contribution of occupational therapy or an occupational perspective.

Transition into Practice
This is the final module and students make the transition from student to practitioner and focus on management, supervision and working with individuals with complex occupational needs. There is a 10 week final practice placement.

Occupation in Context

Develop the theoretical knowledge and practical skills needed to promote and protect public health and wellbeing. You will be equipped to fulfil a variety of roles in health promotion and public health, working in local authorities, health services or the voluntary sector.

Focus on how people and communities can empower themselves to improve their health, and how public policy can create healthier societies and places. You will also investigate the psychology of behaviour change, together with how people learn about health. The research strand will enable you to critically appraise evidence and develop research skills.

Clinical Research Methods MSc is a funded programme for health professionals (not medical or dental), specifically designed to meet the requirements of the HEE/NIHR Integrated Clinical Academic Programme. The programme provides clinical research training, which can be used as the basis for a career in research, working towards a PhD or providing underpinning understanding for research management positions in the NHS.

The programme is designed to be student-centred. You’ll be able to shape your learning to specific training needs and clinical settings through your choice of optional modules, focus of assessment and clinically-focused research dissertation.

You'll develop your learning and understanding of clinical research in a stimulating, multi-professional environment, alongside PhD scholars and Masters students. The MSc draws on expertise from the School of Healthcare and the Leeds Institute of Health Sciences, with staff contributing across modules in areas of expertise.

More information

The bursary is only available to national applicants. There are limited places available i.e. fivefull-time and five part-time funded places. Each place is supported by abursary to meet the programme fees and full salary backfill to employing NHS organisations,as per a contract with Health Education England (HEE)/National Institute forHealth Research (NIHR).

The programme is also open to fee-paying applicants.

Course content

Compulsory modules give you a firm foundation in theoretical and applied research methods form a range of perspectives. The range of optional modules allows you to develop specific knowledge and skills to enhance your dissertation and your research skills after completion of the programme. The 12,000-word dissertation you produce towards the end of your studies, allows you to develop in-depth and applied clinical research knowledge and skills in an area of importance related to your clinical area. If you study this programme part time you will study fewer modules in each year.

Most modules are delivered as full-day blocks, allowing you to plan your time. We expect full-time students to study at least 37.5 hours per week and part-time students 18.5 hours, whether on or off campus.

Your academic supervisor will help you identify your academic training needs. You'll also be supported by your personal tutor. The programme leader is Dr Rebecca Randell
