Interest in sport and exercise in the UK has increased significantly, and those working in the industry require a diverse set of skills. This course will enable you to apply science and medicine to help athletes recover from injury and reach their physical peak, and aid the general population in maintaining healthy lifestyles.

You'll gain practical expertise that will allow you to assess, treat and support individuals from a variety of sporting disciplines. By understanding the process of an injury audit to identify risk factors, you will learn how to implement an evidence-based treatment plan that minimises the chance of re-injury.

You will develop a comprehensive knowledge of pathophysiology, biomechanics and sports-specific clinical reasoning, allowing you to accurately evaluate and attend to injuries that have occurred. You will study rehabilitation strategies, return to play assessments and explore the emergent field of prehabilitation, meaning you can prevent as well as treat injuries.

Introduction and Course Objectives

This vocational training programme has been developed to appeal to recent biology, biomedical, biochemistry and medical graduates who aspire to develop a career in the field of clinical embryology and assisted reproductive technology (ART) and/or the associated reproductive sciences. The programme has been developed by the Division of Reproduction and Early Development within the Leeds Institute of Genetics, Health and Therapeutics in association with the clinicians and embryologists working at the Leeds Centre of Reproductive Medicine in the Leeds NHS Trust. The programme leaders have over 20 years of experience of training clinical embryologists, reproductive medicine practitioners and reproductive scientists.

This is a laboratory-based science degree not a clinically- based infertility treatment course. The programme will provide students with a detailed knowledge of the theory and practices that underpin human clinical embryology and ART. The curriculum covers: the cell and molecular biology of human reproduction, fertility, andrology and embryology; the management and efficient running of an ART laboratory; the practices, genetic and epigenetic concepts of micromanipulation and techniques such as intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) and pre-implantation genetic diagnosis (PGD); advances in cryobiology and its application to gamete and embryo freezing and fertility preservation. It will also provide graduates with valuable insights into the theory underpinning clinical treatments and the ethical and legal controversies surrounding assisted reproduction in humans. The programme will equip graduates to pursue a career in human assisted reproduction (e.g. clinical embryology, infertility treatment) and/or research in the reproductive sciences.

The programme places a strong emphasis on all aspects of practical training for clinical embryology and assisted reproduction technology. Masters students will be tutored in research methods. They will receive hands-on training from specialist practitioners in andrology, gamete handling, IVF, ICSI, embryo culture, gamete and embryo freezing, vitrification, biopsy. Students will interact with established, clinical embryologists and reproductive medicine specialists.

The course will comprise the following compulsory modules:

• Fundamentals of Clinical Embryology;
• IVF and Embryo Culture;

Medical Imaging impinges on virtually every facet of clinical practice and is one of the key elements in diagnosis, monitoring of and in some cases guiding of therapy. Knowledge of the appropriateness and limitations of the various techniques for imaging is therefore an important skill for clinical scientists, healthcare professionals and clinicians.

It is as well to emphasise at this stage that the programmes offered in Medical Imaging are not clinical courses. However, the teaching of the technical aspects of the various imaging modalities will be firmly grounded in the clinical usage of those modalities. Many of the lecturers are also at the forefront of research in their particular field and will bring insights from, not just current imaging practice but, imaging techniques which are currently in their infancy.

An MSc and a PGDip are offered in Medical Imaging; you are allowed to transfer from your original programme, to another one, provided that you do this before you have completed the programme and before an award has been made. This MSc is designed not only for recent graduates preparing for a career in medical imaging, but also for professionals already working in the field. It aims to cover all aspects of medical imaging, from the basic physics involved, through the different modalities, to the current issues involved in working in a modern UK NHS radiology department.

Objectives - By the end of the MSc programme students should be able to:
•Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the physical and mathematical aspects of image formation of several techniques;
•Identify the anatomical and physiological properties of tissue associated with image formation and contrast for several techniques;

If you are already working, or you intend to work, in the field of sport and exercise nutrition this course will provide the opportunity to upgrade your academic and professional skills, expertise and knowledge.

If you wish to gain practical experience as a Sport and Exercise Nutritionist there is an opportunity to complete an extracurricular training programme during the first few weeks of the course. If you complete the entire programme you will be eligible to apply for an internship. This could provide you with an opportunity to gain experience in sport science working under supervision with our University's sports teams, sporting partners and elite performers, whilst studying for a masters degree.

There are no option modules on this course as it is designed to facilitate preparation for accreditation with the Sport and Exercise Nutrition Register. We will provide opportunities for the development of your professional skills relevant to a host of work across performance sport, physical activity, exercise and health. It will also cover the key theories of sport and exercise nutrition.

Assessment

Modules are assessed through a mix of coursework assignments, case studies, examinations, laboratory reports and presentations appropriate to the programme. Each module is assessed through the equivalent of 4,000 words.

This course will enable you to develop an in-depth understanding of scientific principles underpinning the relationship between diet, human health and wellbeing. It will also develop the ability to critically appraise the effect of food processing on nutritional quality of foods and develop an understanding of the role of processed foods in the diet. The programme will encourage you to evaluate the current issues and developments pertinent to the nutrition discipline, and propose new insights and solutions to diet-related problems.

You will develop an understanding of the functions of food components and nutrients, as well as developing a capacity to critically analyse a problem, develop an action plan and go through a scientific investigation. There are also opportunities to develop skills such as effective communication and presentation.

This programme provides advanced training in the mechanisms underpinning a spectrum of infectious and non-infectious diseases, including viral, bacterial and parasitic infections, cancer, neurodegeneration, cardiovascular disease and chromosomal abnormalities. You’ll also explore current and emerging diagnostic and treatment strategies.

You’ll learn about the latest molecular, genetic and cellular approaches being used to understand, diagnose and treat human disease, including traditional methods such as polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), and novel methods involving genome and proteome analysis.
