The Program

Material science in a scientific point of view wants to connect the characteristics on the microscopic scale to the effect (expected or undesirable) on a macroscopic scale. The international “Master of Science in Chemistry and Physics of Functional Materials” therefore integrates concepts of Chemistry and Physics as well as neighboring sciences, math and computer science. Due to its interdisciplinary and applied approach, the program enables its graduates to synthesize and characterize functional materials. An international direction of the study program is realized by our international research staff, regular talks of guest lecturers from abroad and internships which can be undertaken all over the world. All mandatory courses are taught in English. The program could be completed entirely in English. Only for internships (not required) or later work in regional industry German language skills are necessary.

In general, our program aims at people with a bachelor’s degree in physics, chemistry or material science.

Job Outlook

Our graduates are duly qualified for jobs in scientific facilities, research institutes, authorities or industry. In addition, the master’s program prepares for further research and a PhD in this field.

Study Contents

• Synthesis and Characterization of functional materials

The Master's program comprises three semesters of full-time study with a total amount of 90 ECTS. For students with a bachelor with 180 ECTS additional 30 LP (one semester) is offered, finally 300 LP have to be earned.
The program consists of a compulsory part on solid state physics, the synthesis and characterization of functional materials. This gives a broad knowledge in the field of functional materials (15 LP). Furthermore, three optional modules (18 LP) out of six in specific application fields of chemistry and physics in materials science have to be chosen. Electives (12 LP) and a research project (15 LP) prepare the students for their final master thesis with a final oral exam (30 LP).

An increasing number of chemicals is used by society today, which are also released into the environment. Ecotoxicology is concerned with their potential impacts on the ecosystem. It aims to investigate and discover effects of chemicals on biological systems in order to develop methods for risk management, as well as to predict ecological consequences.

The international "Master of Science program in Ecotoxicology" integrates concepts of Environmental Chemistry, Toxicology and Ecology and includes Social Sciences and Economics as well. Due to its interdisciplinary and applied approach, the Program enables its graduates to analyze complex problems and to develop practical solutions.

As environmental problems reach far beyond national borders, an international approach is necessary and the situation in developing countries needs special solutions.

The Master in Ecotoxicology is carried out under the Institute for Environmental Sciences.

Program Structure

All students take the 9 required modules, as well as a 10-week Research Project Course and an Applied Module at External Organisations of 8 weeks to obtain a deep knowledge in the field of Ecotoxicology. Afterwards, studentes personalize the Program by choosing 2 Modules of the 5 Specialty Areas. The Master Thesis with colloquium round out the 4-semester Program.

Applied Module at External Organizations (AMEO)

The module AMEO is an 8-week internship, which can be performed at an external university or a governmental or industrial research institute in Germany or abroad. Students become familiar with working practice, requirements of the job market and career opportunities and can establish business contacts. They apply, confirm and expand knowledge and competences achieved during their study.

Following an introductory discussion with the supervisors, the students perform the (research) work on their own and discuss the obtained results regularly with their supervisors. The content depends on the actual research questions in the selected research organizations. Topics or possible positions will be suggested by the staff of the Institute for Environmental Sciences or maybe suggested by the students. The topics should be directly related to applied problems relevant in these external organisations and should ideally offer the students opportunities to apply their knowledge and skills in areas, which are not the particular research areas at the Institute for Environmental Sciences in Landau. They include, but are not restricted to the following areas:

Engineering aspects (e.g. hydrology, mitigation techniques)
Multimedia modelling
Food web modelling
Fish, bird or mammal ecotoxicology and risk assessment
Agricultural sciences
Socioeconomics
Specific aspects in regulatory ecotoxicology
Risk communication, economic or societal aspects

Research Project Course (RPC)

The students work independently on a research topic of the university for a total time of about 10 weeks. The topics depend on the actual research conducted in the various research groups. However, all topics do have an interdisciplinary character covering at least two different disciplines (e.g. chemistry and ecology, or physics and risk assessment). The students submit proposals for topics selected from a list provided by the teaching staff including a time and resource planning as well as an independently conducted literature search. Following an introductory discussion with the supervisor, the students perform the research work on their own and discuss the obtained results regularly with their supervisor. Following the practical work, the students write a report including the theoretical background, the methods used, the results obtained and a discussion of the results based on the relevant scientific literature. The students present and defend the outcome of their work at an oral presentation. Following successful completion the students are able to plan a scientific work package, conduct the work, evaluate the results based on the relevant literature and present the outcomes.

The content depends on the actual research questions in the research groups associated with the Institute for Environmental Sciences. They include, but are not restricted to the following areas:

Employment outlook

The Program enables the graduates to conduct independent scientific work and prepares in particular for independent and leading positions in the numerous emerging fields of Ecotoxicology. The graduates are able to take responsibility in a professional manner in: Scientific facilities and research institutes, Authorities, public offices and ministries with a regulatory role, Non-governmental organizations, Industry and consulting enterprises. The international orientation of the program qualifies graduates for a global job market. In addition, the Master program prepares for a PhD study.

In order to cover the need for environmental specialists, the program "Master of Science in Environmental Sciences" at the University of Koblenz-Landau (Landau Campus) provides a research-oriented, unique blend in the core disciplines of natural sciences (including environmental chemistry, landscape and applied ecology) complemented by selected aspects of social sciences such as environmental economics. Program Structure

Our interdisciplinary curriculum emphasises computer science and builds bridges to social sciences, economics, law, linguistics and mathematics. All mandatory courses are taught in English.

The curriculum is organized in seven module groups:

Foundations of Web Science (two modules) establishes the main idea of Web Science. It provides an interdisciplinary primary view of the web and of more abstract web structures.

The Computer Science track (three modules) teaches the essential technical aspects, namely web engineering, semantic web and web retrieval.

Web and Society (two out of four modules) considers interaction of the web and different user groups: citizens, customers, entrepreneurs, and interest groups.

The module group Elective Courses in Computer Science provides a wide range of technical topics. Modules may be choosen freely from all Master courses in computer science with relevance to the web given at the University of Koblenz-Landau (three modules or more, mininum 18 ECTS).

Elective Interdisciplinary Courses contain web-related modules offered by our university from other disciplines (such as economy, social sciences, linguistics, anthropology, communication theory etc.). Students have to freely elect at least two modules (12 ECTS).

Topics for seminars and research lab can be freely chosen from Web Science subjects. Furthermore, this module group contains a social skills and leadership training..

The topic of the master's thesis can also be freely chosen from any Web Science subjects.

Requirements

Higher Education Entrance Qualification -

It is a legal requirement in Germany that students own a Higher education entrance qualification („Hochschulzugangsberechtigung“) respectively a Master entrance qualification („Masterzugangsberechtigung“), proven by school leaving certificates or studies completed at secondary education level.

Entrance qualification is not checked by us, but uni-assist (see application process), therefore please refrain from asking us if your diploma will be accepted. Uni-assist provides some further information on higher education entrance qualification.

Academic Background in Computer Science -

You need some academic background in computer science, such as a

bachelor's degree in computer science, business informatics, Computervisualistik (as offered by the University of Koblenz-Landau), Information management (as offered by the University of Koblenz-Landau until 2012 if 60 ECTS in computer science were acquired) or similar.

Students with a minor in computer science (at least 60 European Credit Points) can apply, too. Here we have to make a decision on a by-case-basis. To get an educated guess please contact the course guidance.

Only diplomas of international accredited universities will be accepted. If you are unshure if your academic background fulfils our requirements, do not hesitate to contact us: . Non-academic, practical experience in computer science alone does not qualify you for our programme.

Sufficient Grades in Previous Studies -

The German grading system ranges from 1 ("very good") to 6 ("insufficient"). Lower numbers mean better grades. To be eligible for our programme, the grades from your previous studies must be between 1 and 2.5. Grade conversion into the German system is done by uni-assist (cf. application procedure), so we cannot tell you if your GPA fis sufficient. For a first, non-binding estimation on your eligibility you might want to check the calculator provided by the University of Paderborn.

English Language Proficiency -

The medium of instruction for all required courses is English, some additional electives can be taken in German. Thus, we require a certain level of English proficiency such that studies can be undertaken successfully. Thus, a standardised language certificate is required – proof that your previous studies were held in English are not sufficient and not negiotiable. We accept three types of language proficiency certificates:

a TOEFL result of at least 79 (internet based), 550 (paper based) or 213 (computer based)

IELTS test with 6.5 points mininum

Cambridge certificate at level B2 or higher (find an exam center)

Proficiency of German language is not a requirement for application. However, additional elective courses are available in German, and we recommend to learn some basic German for daily life. Some hints on learning German can be found at Deutsche Welle.

Motivational Letter -

Applicants need to supply a motivational letter. Please do not send lenghty standard letters describing your general interest in computer science and your appreciation of the German education system. Instead, refer only to our specific programme and follow these guidelines:

Length should be between 150 and 300 words.

The letter must be written in English.

Specify what you learnt and found particularly interesting in your previous studies or practical experiences. Tell us how you want to deepen these previous experience in our master's programme. You can also describe what you expect to learn here for your future job. You should always refer to our curriculum, especially the module groups Foundations of Web Science, Major Subject Computer Science und Major Subject Web and Society. Make clear that you know our curriculum and point out why you have chosen our programme above others.

About the Program

Complex systems with a technological, biological or socio-economic background determine our everyday life. The challenge of modeling these complex systems mathematically demands the following prototypic profile of an "expert mastering a repertoire of modern mathematical and computer based methods for modeling, simulating and optimizing complex systems and knowing how to combine those methods for solving real-world problems".
The term expert is understood in the sense of generalist and not a specialist, since this program aims at teaching a broad spectrum of modern methods.

The two-years English-taught master program "Mathematical Modeling of Complex Systems" focuses on advanced techniques of modeling, simulation and optimization. A substantial set of elective courses allows concentration on areas of individual interest. A mobility window enables the students to study abroad and gain scientific and cultural experience at international partner universities. This program uses English as medium of instruction since its graduates will enter a highly globalized work and research community. Besides that, the participation and enrollment of international candidates is explicitly welcomed.

Application oriented, interdisciplinary seminars link the theoretical basics and concepts of modeling and simulation. Students work in small teams to solve real world problems. This teamwork reflects typical work in applied sciences and corresponds to our paradigm of an "expert mastering a repertoire of methods to solve problems".

Aims/Career Perspectives

The Master degree in Mathematical Modeling of Complex Systems is to give those possessing extended skills in Mathematics, Physics and Computer Science in theory, experiment and practical application. These skills are complemented with further knowledge in additional topics, individually selected by each student. The degree entitles its holder to exercise professional work in the field of Applied Mathematics and/or Mathematical Modeling in science or industry or to pursue a PhD program in related fields.

Program Structure

The first three terms of the two-years master „Mathematical Modeling of Complex Systems“ consist of core courses in Applied Mathematics and Applied Physics. Elective courses in Applied Mathematics, Applied Physics and Computer Sciences allow each student to set its individual focus. Active use of the gained knowledge and its application to the solution of real-world problems is taught and practiced in a project seminar. This project seminar can be carried out in a three-month period at a research institution, enterprise or at university. The master thesis in the last term and dealing with modeling and simulating a real-world problem, shows the student’s ability to perform independent research work.
The core and elective courses typically include a written or oral exam, the project seminar is graded based an oral presentation and written report of the project results.
