State of The Art

Biotechnology constitutes one of the key disciplines of the 21st century, with enormous potential for growth and professional development. On the one hand that is due to progress made in biomedical research, leading to the development of new diagnostic and therapeutic procedures. At the same time the chemical industry is showing a growing interest in biotechnological processes to reduce its environmental footprint and increase the efficiency of the methods employed. In addition to the pharmaceutical, chemical and food industries, which make use of biotechnological processes in varying degrees, there is now a biotechnology-based industry in its own right, in which added value is generated primarily with the help of biotechnological principles.

Curriculum

The Master’s program in Biotechnology is designed to communicate the knowledge, methodological skills and problem-solving competence needed to tackle a very wide range of scientific and engineering problems.

With its focus on industrial and pharmaceutical biotechnology, the study program is designed to enable graduates to convert laboratory
results in the field of bioscience into full-scale industrial processes.

The Master’s program combines various methodological modules – such as molecular biotechnology, bioprocess engineering, biotechnological separation processes, bioanalytics and bioinformatics – with applications-oriented modules covering the whole field of biotechnology, including pharmaceutical biotechnology, food biotechnology and industrial biotechnology.

The program is also designed to take account of the growing interest shown in trade and industry in graduates with the ability to fulfill overarching functions like quality, project and process management, including the relevant key competences (working methods, social competence, team working skills, etc). In addition to solving technical problems, graduates are also in a position to evaluate the economic impacts of the decisions taken. Thanks to project-based learning, industry visits, practicals and laboratory work, the study program also has a strong focus on practical relevance.

The 21st century calls for graduates with an interdisciplinary training and problem-solving competence in the fields of ecology, energy, resources etc. Process engineering, for example, with such fields as environmental- and energy engineering, is now seen as one of the key disciplines. It deals with the engineering required for a wide range of processes and the transformation of materials, in which raw materials are converted in a series of unit operations into salable intermediate and final products.

One focus of training within the discipline relates to the development and application of various environmental and energy technologies. Both environmental- and energy engineering are classified as green technologies, which have developed at an above-average rate in the last few years. That is due to growing social awareness for sustainability and the finite nature of our resources on the one hand and legal constraints on the other. The latter in particular call for innovative processes and technologies in response to today’s challenges. The Master program in Environmental, Process & Energy Engineering is designed to communicate the knowledge, methodology and problem-solving competence needed to tackle a very wide range of engineering problems in the above mentioned fields. With its commitment to bridge-building between the academic and the business worlds, Management Center Innsbruck also provides essential teaching in the increasingly important horizontal disciplines of law and economics, and the skills needed for today’s labor market.

Major Energy Engineering

In the light of dwindling energy resources and volatile energy prices, energy engineering has become an integral economic factor with enormous potential for growth, especially in such fields as energy generation from non-fossil primary energy sources, energy distribution and energy savings. MCI graduates with a specialization in Energy Engineering typically deal with a wide variety of processes, from conventional power plant engineering to the conversion of energy carriers and their various precursors, and decentral energy supply systems. The major in Energy Engineering caters for these market requirements by communicating the relevant knowledge and skills with a combination of in-depth teaching and practical applicability.

The objectives of this Master program are:

The master’s program equips graduates with profound academic knowledge of technology, chemistry, safety and trends, and economic fundamentals in the fields of food and nutrition. The contents of the master’s program Food Technology & Nutrition have been adapted to the present and future requirements of economy, and provide future engineers with the best possible qualification to assert themselves as competent experts or independent entrepreneurs on the job market.

An important goal of the program is to connect high-quality skills in the areas of food technology and nutrition in an integrative way, and to thus develop interdisciplinary options. Special focus is here on the methods of analysis and quality management, on respective legal frameworks in the admission, production and packaging of food, as well as on food constituents and nutrition trends.

Training in business administration forms an essential aspect of the qualification profile. In the course of the electronic revolution at the end of the 20th century, mechanical engineering was reinvented as the backbone of industrial production. The result is mechatronics, a synergistic combination of mechanical components with electronic and IT systems. This technological integration forms new areas of application like electrical and digital technology in machine communication and control.

With the introduction of the Master program in Mechatronics & Smart Technologies, MCI has filled a gap in the educational offering in the west of Austria. With its international orientation and a consistent focus on practical relevance, the program makes a significant contribution to the goal of establishing the Tyrol as a high-tech location with the ability to compete at the international level and defy the fluctuations of the business cycle. With the implementation of the majors in mechanical and electrical engineering and the specialization in computational mechanics at our partner campus in Paris, MCI continues its way as spear head of the Tyrolean technology offensive.

The goal of the Master program in particular is to equip graduates with a competence in mechatronics that is more than the sum of its parts, i.e. mechanical engineering, electronics and IT. Integration of these three pillars is the key to smart technologies as robotics, automated code generation, multi-physical simulation, systems in systems and smart automation, and their application in electro mobility, industry 4.0 and energy efficiency.

With supporting classes in Leadership, Strategic Management, Marketing and Entrepreneurship, this study program opens up perspectives for knowledge-based careers in the manufacturing and service industries worldwide.
