This course provides postgraduate education in Forensic and Analytical Sciences. Forensic Science involves the use of scientific techniques and principles to address questions of interest to a court of law. This course provides you with an overview of forensic science in general, following the crime scene to court model. This includes a series of crime scene exercises in our crime scene facilities, covering strategies for crime scene examination and an exploration of techniques associated with crime scene examination. You will also receive a comprehensive overview of most of the forensic science disciplines through the forensic biology and forensic chemistry module. You will also explore quality, which is an increasingly fundamental issue within forensic science industry; as well as the presentation of evidence and preparations for defending your evidence in a court of law.

In addition, you will then study modules underpinning the analytical sciences, which is a major source of employment for scientists, reflected in our high graduate employment rate. These modules will provide you with a comprehensive overview of the most recent technological developments and applications in Analytical Sciences. Gastric balloon: a non-invasive weight loss intervention

Project Description

Obesity is a major health concern and weight loss surgery is the gold standard treatment but is expensive and irreversible. Gastric balloons are an alternative to weight loss surgery, and are endoscopically administered in a capsule and inflated once in the stomach. This reduces the stomach volume and therefore improves the patient’s satiety threshold, and subsequently leads to significant weight loss. The approach is cost effective compared to other surgical interventions but still expensive as it cannot be offered outside hospital settings. The balloon needs endoscopic removal under anaesthesia after 4 months of its insertion; it is subject to spontaneous deflation if not removed. A repeated course of three balloons can be very expensive. This project aims to redesign the gastric balloon to improve its limitations. The project will include developing a series of formulations, their detailed characterisation, for example; swelling, gastric-stability, rheology, buoyancy, stability, degradation etc. The project may potentially lead to industrial/clinical collaborations to further the technology in preclinical and clinical trials.

Eligibility

Applicants must have a good honours degree (2.1 or equivalent) in pharmacy or a related discipline. Desirable criteria are evidence of further study or equivalent level and practical laboratory experience. If English is not your first language, you will be asked to provide proof of proficiency.

Funding

The project is internally funded by the Research and Enterprise of the University of Huddersfield and open to applicants from Home/EU and Overseas. The successful applicant will receive a full waiver to their tuition fees and will also receive an annual bursary of £14,553 for one year.
