The Master's degree programme in Energy and Environmental Sciences focuses on the large-scale issues and tries to contribute to possible solutions to the energy and environmental challenges.

The programme is connected to the Energy and Sustainability Research Institute Groningen (ESRIG). Several research groups are joining forces in ESRIG resulting in a variety of research subjects, such as:

Within the rapidly expanding European renewable energy industry, an urgent demand exists for more postgraduate trained staff specialised in renewable energy technology. Together with leading European Universities, EUREC Agency has developed the European Master in Renewable Energy. Hanze University of Applied Sciences, Groningen (Hanze UAS), became member of the EUREC consortium and started this master programme in September 2012.

The aim of the European Master in Renewable Energy is to train postgraduate students to fill the gap between the growing industry demand for specialised renewable energy expertise and the skills currently available on the job market.

By structuring the course in three sections, students are guaranteed to spend time in at least two different EU countries and make contact with a wide range of European universities and companies involved in the renewable energy sector. The participating universities are all well-established in training and research and recognised internationally for their work in the field of renewable energy technology.

First semester

The first semester the student will acquire a solid foundation in key renewable energy technologies and the socio-economic issues related to these. For the core the student can choose one of the following universities:
-Ecoles des MINES de Paris, France - French-taught
-Loughborough University, UK - English-taught
-University of Zaragoza, Spain - Spanish-taught
-Oldenburg University, Germany - English-taught
-Hanze UAS, Groningen, The Netherlands - English-taught

Second semester: Specialisation

The second semester will give students the opportunity to specialise in a chosen technology at a different university. The specialisations are taught in English. For the specialization there are the following options:
-National Technical University of Athens, Greece - Wind
-University of Northumbria, UK - Photovoltaics
-University of Zaragoza, Spain - Grid Integration
-University of Perpignan, France - Solar Thermal
-Instituto Superior Tecnico in Lisbon, Portugal - Ocean Energy

Third semester: The thesis

In the third semester each student will conduct a 6 month research project in a company or a research centre. This is done under supervision of a professor of the core, a professor of the specialization and a supervisor from the project provider. For your final thesis placement it is possible to apply for an Erasmus placement grant.

The participating universities are all well-established in training and research as well as being recognised at an international level for their work in the field of renewable energy technology.

During this two-year Master's programme Ecology and Evolution, you will gain insight into the living organism in relation to its environment.

Ecology is an internationally oriented field and the degree programme has a strong focus on research. You will therefore conduct one or two independent research projects in various fields. But as you can design most of the programme yourself, you can specialize in the area of your interest. This programme also offers a Top Programme in Evolutionary Biology.

Research Projects in Various Fields

The Master's degree programme is coordinated by the Groningen Institute for Evolutionary Life Sciences. GELIFES is part of the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences and embraces fourteen research groups, which perform research in the fields of:

-Evolutionary Ecology & Genetics
On the importance of genetic variation: how do genetic variation and natural selection result in reproductive systems, adaptation of organisms to their environment and the emergence of new species? We try to answer this question by means of an experimental, molecular approach (genomics) and via model-based studies.

-Behavioural Ecology & Ecophysiology
Both the morphology and physiology of an organism and its behaviour are formed by selection. Behaviour – for example the timing of reproduction, partner choice and time and route of bird migration – and physiology – for example the degree of plasticity to regulate energy use and temperature – are products of evolution. Theoretical models are paired with experimental ones to study these issues, both in the field and in the laboratory.

-Conservation Biology
Small populations are threatened with extinction because their habitat is fragmented. Their chance of survival depends on their genetic structure, demography, dynamics of distribution, etc. This type of research is important, for example, for the restoration of nature reserves or the development of sustainable fishery. Examples of a research projects include the effects of genetic erosion in fruit flies and the seed dispersal of plants in the Wadden Sea.

-Community Ecology
Species and individuals living in the same area interact with each other and with their environment. Processes of physiological adaptations and restrictions, competition, grazing, predation and succession can change a group of individuals into a community. Combining field observations, laboratory experiments and theoretical models can give us a better understanding of the mechanisms that are active in nature.

The hallmark is to explore the interface between ecology and evolution. You will benefit from a wide spectrum of national and international expertise in these fields. You will acquire top quality research competences. The programme is specifically designed to acquire the right research competences and prepare you for conducting top quality research.

The Top Programme is administered by the Centre for Ecological and Evolutionary Studies (CEES), a centre of excellence in ecological and evolutionary research and the lead partner in the national Research School Functional Ecology and Biodiversity. This central position ensures that students can benefit from a wide spectrum of national and international expertise across the fields of ecology and evolution. Via advanced theoretical and practical training you will become highly attractive for research positions in the area of Evolutionary Biology.

We also offer an Erasmus Mundus programme in Evolutionary Biology: A joint project between four European universities. Students will start the programme at one of these universities and will spend at least one semester at a partner university.

How are the oceans responding to climate change? In answering such questions, the two-year Master's degree programme in Marine Biology focuses on life in our planet's seas and oceans. Whether you are interested in biological oceanography, conservation of marine mammals, or coastal marine ecology, there are plenty of opportunities: you can design your own study programme to fit your personal preferences. In 2015, we start the renewed Marine Biology Master program in Groningen.

The modernized program is open for all students with a bachelor in biology. It includes a number of newly developed master courses which are jointly taught by several research groups in Marine Biology at the University of Groningen, and in close co-operation with the Royal Netherlands Institute for Sea Research (Texel, Yerseke). The programme is strongly research oriented. You will conduct research under the supervision of experienced scientists.
