Stratified Medicine holds huge potential in the timely development of new treatments for human disease. It is among the most important concepts to emerge in 21st century clinical science and will be a crucial component of the global drive to increase the efficacy, safety and cost effectiveness of new treatments. This taught postgraduate Masters programme draws on the current and future needs of the Life Sciences sector, to create a highly skilled workforce. It harnesses Scotland’s strengths in Stratified Medicine, Clinical Trials, Bioinformatics and Pharmacogenomics to provide focused training which integrates basic and clinical sciences, and equips students with grounding in the essential skills required to design, execute and evaluate modern clinical interventions.
Students will undertake core courses which will account for 90 credits and a further 30 credits from options, which will enable students to personalise their degree to better align it with their future career aspirations. Students will also be offered a choice of project.
Project and assessment
The project will account for the remaining 60 credits. The programme will include an opportunity for all students to present the outcomes of their projects to an audience of other students and academics. Assessment will consist of submission of a dissertation and a viva examination.
Graduates of this programme will be competitive applicants for the positions in the commercial life sciences sector, or for PhD study in an academic or combined commercial/academic environment.
This Masters enables you to specialise in the history of medicine, led and supported by internationally regarded historians. The two core courses provide you with an introduction to major topics in the history of medicine of the 18th, 19th, and 20th centuries, and to the methodologies, qualitative and quantitative, which historians have employed to explore them. Topics covered include: practitioner/patient interaction, history of diagnosis, obstetrics, professionalisation and medical education, history of hospitals, medical ethics, infant health and nutrition, Jewish medicine, medical technology, sexuality, disability, public health and gender. You will be introduced to the major bibliographical tools and archival resources for the history of medicine.
You’ll also produce a dissertation.
The research skills and methods you’ll gain on this programme give you the transferable skills you need for positions in the public and private sectors, including heritage policy and projects, media and teaching. The programme is also a good foundation for a PhD.
This taught MSc in Sports Science is designed to provide you with an advanced, research-led programme of study in sport and exercise science and medicine. A key strength of this programme is its flexibility, which enables you to specialise in physical activity and health, sports performance, or sports medicine.
You will attend lectures, seminars and tutorials and take part in lab classes, journal clubs, presentations and self-directed learning. The programme is made up of 60 compulsory credits and 3 x 20 credit options (X,Y and Z) plus a research project (60 credits)
Choose one X option, one Y option and one Z option.
The flexibility of this programme will provide you with many career opportunities. These include working in clinical exercise, health-promotion or in sports science support. A number of our graduates are employed in senior sports science positions with national sporting bodies and professional sports clubs. This programme also allows doctors and physiotherapists to aid their knowledge; for science graduates, there are opportunities in rehabilitation and higher education. It also provides an excellent basis if you wish to pursue PhD level research.
Cardiovascular disease is projected to remain the single leading cause of death over the next two decades, accountable for considerable disability and reduction in quality of life. This Masters in Cardiovascular Sciences will include specialist training in the epidemiological nature of the disease, in combination with analysis of the cellular and molecular mechanisms that underlie its development.
In addition to the taught courses you will take part in student-led critical review sessions where you will provide a critical appraisal of a scientific research paper taken from current literature.
You will also take part in an introductory session on how to review a scientific paper, designed to give you experience of reading, summarising and presenting the findings of a scientific publication in a critical manner.
In addition you will undertake a dissertation/project supervised by an established cardiovascular researcher.
Successful graduates will emerge equipped with the skills necessary for a career in the highly competitive field of cardiovascular research. Career opportunities include education, clinical translational cardiovascular research, public health bodies or commercial industrial research in the field of cardiovascular medicine. Students who have completed course are currently employed in NHS, PhD programmes, academia and industry.
This Clinical Pharmacology degree programme offers focused training which integrates basic and clinical sciences, and equips students with the essential skills required to function effectively as a clinical pharmacologist in the 21st century. As a student on the MSc Clinical Pharmacology programme, you will acquire core skills, enabling an appreciation of how to apply clinical pharmacological, regulatory and ethical principles to the optimisation of therapeutic practice and clinical research. Crucially, in addition to a firm grasp of the principles of molecular pharmacology, you will also gain foundational knowledge in the emerging science of pharmacogenomics and personalised medicine.

Health Technology Assessment (HTA) is the assessment of relevant evidence and knowledge on the effects and consequences of healthcare technologies. It contributes to priorities and decisions in relation to prevention, diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitation. This Masters in HTA focuses on the production, critical appraisal and use of scientifically rigorous research evidence, applied to a range of health-related areas.
HTA has growing importance internationally for informing health care decision making and there is increasing demand for employees with HTA relevant skills. Outside of the field of HTA, students would be well equipped with qualitative and quantitative research skills for jobs in academia, the pharmaceutical industry, and government information services/statistical agencies.
