About the programme

Designed for graduates with an appropriate degree in health, biological or social sciences, nursing or a related subject wishing to change careers, this programme will prepare student nurses for professional registration. There is a strong evidence-based focus which develops existing knowledge and research skills and you will engage in a combination of theory, clinical simulation, reflection, personal development planning and practice learning experiences. Ongoing assessment, practical experience and clinical simulation will develop nurses who are fit-for-practice.

Note: Overseas applicants, in addition, must complete the academic version of the British Council International English Language Testing System (IELTS) test and achieve at least 7.0 in the listening and reading sections, at least 7.0 in the writing and speaking sections and at least an overall score of 7.0 (NMC Circular 1/2007).

Practical experience

Practice learning experiences are available in one of five West of Scotland health boards: NHS Ayrshire and Arran; NHS Dumfries and Galloway; NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde; NHS Lanarkshire and NHS The State Hospital. You will experience the 24 hour/7 day continuum of care which represents contemporary healthcare delivery, enhancing your clinical skills and integrating theory with practice. This also includes private, independent and voluntary organisations.

Your learning

The programme has three parts containing a mixture of theory and practice core modules. There are three 20 credit modules in Part 1 and 2 with Part 3 consisting of a 60 credit theory/practice dissertation module.

The programme aims to prepare student nurses for professional registration, with key components including the delivery of person-centred care, compassionate care, values-based care, the patient safety agenda and professional, legal and ethical issues.

Investment in the Domus Initiative – an older adult artificial home environment – provides you with experience in caring for older people and dementia care. In a first for the Scottish university sector, we have established A Community Orientated Resource for Nursing (ACORN) where students can practice within a simulated primary care environment.

About the programme

UWS has an established reputation for delivering advanced biomedical sciences education – utilising our successful links with local NHS and industry laboratories, we provide discipline-specific experts to complement the skills of the University’s School of Science and Sport teaching staff.

The programme aims to give you a balance of theory, practical skills and application of a range of techniques relevant to the biomedical sciences such as medical genetics, immunobiology, and disease pathology. Two optional modules are offered, which allow you to specialise in either blood sciences, infection or pathology. The research-orientated nature of the programme will also offer an additional option for those wishing to retrain for a career in the pharmaceutical and healthcare industries.

Practical experience

You’ll study

Diploma and MSc students follow the same taught courses for the first two semesters. MSc students also undertake an individual research dissertation on an approved topic.

Compulsory classes are Personal Study and Research Methods. Plus you’ll choose a range of optional modules in Advance Software Engineering, Enterprise Information Systems and Mobile Systems.

This course will allow you to select leading classes that span the breadth of both computer and information sciences, including theoretical computer science, human-computer interaction, information sciences, software engineering, machine learning and big data.

You’ll study

You'll gain an understanding of the new challenges posed by the advent of the big data revolution, particularly in relation to its modelling, storage, and access. You'll also come to understand the key algorithms and techniques embodied within data analytics solutions, and be exposed to a number of different big data technologies and techniques, seeing how they can achieve efficiency and scalability, while also addressing design trade-offs and their impacts.

You'll learn key technologies that are at the heart of big data analytics such as NoSQL databases and Hadoop and the Map-Reduce programming paradigm. You will also be equipped with a sound understanding of the principles of machine learning and a range of popular approaches, along with the knowledge of how and when to apply these.

You will also have the opportunity to implement and experiment with these machine learning algorithms using the most popular languages such as R and Python, and explore their applications to areas as diverse as analysing activity-related data captured using a smartphone to financial time-series prediction.

Individual project/dissertation

You’ll take on an individual research project on an approved topic related to your selected pathway. You’ll pursue a specific interest in further depth, giving scope for original thought, research and technical presentation of complex ideas.

You’ll study

- Year 1
You'll take a selection of compulsory and optional taught classes. This is combined with training in business and project management skills and research methodologies and techniques.
Potential Year 2 research projects are explored during this year through completion of a mini-project, with a final topic agreed for the start of Year 2.

- Year 2
You'll undertake a major research project within the electrical power and energy disciplines. You'll also select a number of advanced taught modules designed to broaden your understanding of your chosen topic.

You'll have exclusive access to our extensive computing network and purpose built teaching spaces including our outdoor test facility for photovoltaics high voltage laboratory, equipped with the latest technologies including:
- LDS 6-digital partial discharge test & measurement system
- Marx impulse generators & GIS test rigs
- £1M distribution network and protection laboratory comprising a 100kVA microgrid, induction machines and programme load banks

You'll have access to the UK’s only high-fidelity control room simulation suite and the Power Networks Demonstration Centre (PNDC). This is Europe’s first centre dedicated to the development and demonstration of “smart-grid” technologies.

Learning & teaching

We use a blend of teaching and learning methods including interactive lectures, problem-solving tutorials and practical project-based laboratories. Our technical and experimental officers are available to support and guide you on individual subject material.

Each module comprises approximately five hours of direct teaching per week. To enhance your understanding of the technical and theoretical topics covered in these, you're expected to undertake a further five to six hours of self-study, using our web-based virtual learning environment (MyPlace), research journals and library facilities.

The teaching and learning methods used ensure you'll develop not only technical engineering expertise but also communications, project management and leadership skills.

You'll undertake group projects. These will help to develop your interpersonal, communication and transferable skills essential to a career in industry.

Guest lectures

Guest presentations are a regular feature of the courses. These are often done by industry partners or department alumni. Speakers will share with you how they have put their knowledge and learning into practice in the world of work.

Interaction with industry is provided through our internships, teaching seminars and networking events. The department delivers monthly seminars to support students’ learning and career development. Iberdrola, National Grid, ScottishPower, SSE, Siemens and Rolls-Royce are just a few examples of the industry partners you can engage with during your course.

Assessment

A variety of assessment techniques are used throughout the course. You'll complete at least six modules in Year 1. Each module has a combination of written assignments, individual and group reports, oral presentations, practical lab work and, where appropriate, an end-of-term exam.

Assessment of the Year 2 research project consists of four elements, with individual criteria:
1. Interim report (10%, 1500 – 3000 words) – The purpose of this report is to provide a mechanism for supervisors to provide valuable feedback on the project’s objectives and direction.
2. Poster Presentation (15%) – A vital skill of an engineer is the ability to describe their work to others and respond to requests for information. The poster presentation is designed to give you an opportunity to practise that.
3. Final report (55%) – This assesses the communication of project objectives and context, accuracy and relevant of background material, description of practical work and results, depth and soundness of discussion and conclusions, level of engineering achievement and the quality of the report’s presentation.
4. Conduct (20%) - Independent study, project and time management are key features of university learning. The level of your initiative & independent thinking and technical understanding are assessed through project meetings with your supervisor and your written logbooks.

The course provides the advanced level of knowledge and understanding required for challenging, well paid and exciting careers in the high growth power and energy sectors.

Employment prospects are excellent, with recent graduates working in power engineering consultancy, global power utilities (generation, supply and distribution), the renewable energy sector and manufacturing. They've taken up professional and technical positions as electrical engineers, power systems specialists, distribution engineer and asset managers in large energy utilities such as Iberdrola, EDF Energy and China State Grid. Graduates have also taken up roles in project management and engineering consultancy with companies such as Arup, Atkins Global, Ramboll, Moot MacDonald and AMEC.
