Sustainable and profitable agricultural production requires knowledge of how best to integrate various components using a systems approach. This course focuses on the application of science to the management of animals and plants in production systems, as well as environmental stewardship.

Course description, features and facilities

The Master of Agricultural Science with a specialisation in Agricultural Systems will provide students with an in-depth understanding of agricultural systems designed for crop, pasture and animal production in a profitable and sustainable way by applying biological and other scientific knowledge.Integration and planning within and across years is considered within an integrated systems approach to resource management. Students will be equipped for a career in plant and/or animal production industries based on scientific 'clean, green and ethical' principles.

UWA is well equipped for teaching and research in agricultural science, with a field station at Shenton Park and the University's new research farm near Pingelly, which aims to be self-supporting, sustainable, carbon-neutral, clean, green and ethical – a best practice farm.

Teaching in agricultural science is also supported by the outstanding research and outreach activities of the Institute of Agriculture, the Centre for Legumes in Mediterranean Agriculture (CLIMA), the International Centre for Plant Breeding Education and Research (ICPBER) and the Australian Herbicide Resistance Initiative (AHRI).

At the same time, agricultural systems are being placed under pressure to meet environmental, social and economic goals. To meet these goals and to maintain or increase production levels, an understanding of the complex factors that shape agricultural systems is required.

Course description, features and facilities

Australian agriculture is a key part of the world's food supply system. The challenges of a rapidly growing population, climate change, and the limitations of land and fresh water all impact on the ability of agriculture to meet the demand for food, fibre and fuel. To address this demand, an understanding of the complex factors that shape agricultural systems is necessary.


Agricultural Science provides the research, technology and information for the sustainable, profitable and ethical development of the agricultural industry. Studies in agriculture include soil science, genetics, cropping and pasture systems, soil-plant interaction, livestock production, agricultural economics and agribusiness.

Structure

The Master of Agricultural Science is offered by coursework or coursework and dissertation.

While the standard timeframe for completion of this degree is two years' (full time), if you have previously completed an undergraduate degree in a cognate (related) area it may be possible to complete within 1.5 years'.

The course offers a focused, advanced learning experience that will enhance career choices. You must complete all core units and specialisation core units. This degree also provides the flexibility to choose from a range of units to complement your specific interests.

Course structures for the master's degrees with the new 1.5 to 2 years' structure (72 to 96 points) are now available via the UWA Handbook.

Career opportunities

This course prepares students with the knowledge and skills they need for a future in the rapidly evolving field of agricultural science. The Master of Biological Science with a specialisation in Conservation Biology will allow you to help mitigate the increasing pressures of human activity and population growth on threatened species and communities, and prepares you for a wide range of jobs in conservation and restoration science.

The Conservation Biology specialisation focuses on the ecology, conservation, evolution and management of plants and animals and the ecosystems in which they occur. A graduate will have advanced knowledge of the evolution of our flora and fauna and the ecosystems in which they occur and are well-prepared to engage in field as well as desktop studies to analyse and mitigate species and ecosystem threats.

Western Australia is widely renowned as one of the world's hotspots for terrestrial and marine biodiversity. There are about 13,000 species of plants in Western Australia, with more being discovered all the time. About 3,000 of these species are yet to be formally named. Nearly 70% of Australia's mammal species are found within the state, with 25 species being found nowhere else. Reptile species are even more diverse with higher endemism. Up to 80 per cent of the region's fish and invertebrates found nowhere else in the world. The Master of Biological Science with a specialisation in Zoology will provide students with a comprehensive understanding of the structure, function, diversity and evolution of animals, as well as the interaction of animals with each other and the environment.

You will have the opportunity to study animals and their habitats, including Western Australia's exciting fauna. These habitats are diverse, and range from deserts through to temporary wetlands and rainforests and ultimately the sea. Zoologists discover the solutions to the problems presented by these habitats.

This specialisation integrates theory with practical (both field and laboratory) studies utilising many of the animals and ecosystems from the diverse state of Western Australia as examples.

The Faculty is well equipped for teaching through the School of Animal Biology and is supported by the world class research of the Centre for Evolutionary Biology, the Oceans Institute, and the Centre of Excellence in Natural Resource Management.

Zoologists are concerned with theoretical topics as diverse as molecular evolution, anatomy, physiology, reproduction, behaviour and community ecology, and with applied aspects that range from fauna conservation and pest management to stream ecology and water quality studies.

It provides you with a unique combination of the three key platforms: public health; advanced study in a related science discipline; and an industry internship. It is taught by the Faculty of Science and the Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences.

It provides a pathway for you to further develop your science knowledge, and integrate this knowledge with a solid grounding in Public Health (theory and skills) as well as providing a work practicum in the health industry (for example health promotion, research, policy and administration). This integration enables you to be ‘job-ready’ at the end of your course.
