We offer Postgraduate training programmes in Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapies and Approaches at Certificate, Diploma and Masters level. These are aimed at developing competence in established evidence-based applications, especially for the prevention of relapse in recurrent major depression, but also for clients in a range of different settings including physical and mental healthcare and education.

Within mental health settings Mindfulness-based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT) as a treatment for preventing relapse from depression is becoming increasingly adopted. The use of mindfulness-based treatments for other conditions and in a wider range of settings outside of healthcare is also on the increase. In this programme you will develop a foundational base of the theory and research surrounding MBCT and other Mindfulness-based Approaches (MBA). You will have considerable opportunity for developing and reflecting on a personal mindfulness practice. This foundation lays the basis for continuing on to the Postgraduate Diploma year.

Train with experts

Each of our postgraduate training programmes in Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapies and Approaches maintain an in depth focus on the underpinning theory and research, enhanced by the work carried out in the Mood Disorders Centre (http://www.exeter.ac.uk/mooddisorders/ ) ; a partnership between the University of Exeter and the National Health Service. The Centre has been offering MBCT as part of its clinical services since 2002. In addition to the training delivered by experts from the Mood Disorders Centre with an international profile in developing, researching and teaching mindfulness-based approaches, teaching is enhanced by external tutors skilled in MBCT and Mindfulness-based interventions.

The programmes have been set up and are run in collaboration with Gaia House (http://gaiahouse.co.uk/about ) ; a centre for meditation, enquiry and compassion where you will attend retreats to cultivate your own personal mindfulness practice. You will benefit from the integral involvement of experienced Buddhist teachers exploring the lineage of mindfulness in Buddhist Psychology, and the teachers at Gaia House.

Our training places you at the heart of the community in a region with one of the largest networks of mindfulness practitioners and Buddhist teachers in the country.

PGCert Psychological Therapies Practice

This programme aims to update you with the latest research and theory in MBCT/MBA particularly drawing on the work within the Mood Disorders Centre at the University of Exeter. In this programme we aim to detail the knowledge underpinning MBCT/MBA from a psychological and Buddhist perspective.

We aim to provide you with the experiential knowledge of a personal mindfulness practice and how this is fundamental to teaching MBCT/MBA. Although this year does not give you the necessary skills to begin to teach MBCT/MBA there will be opportunities to begin to lead some practices in a supportive learning environment preparing you for the Diploma.

PGCDip Psychological Therapies Practice

The PGDip Psychological Therapies Practice (Mindfulness-based Cognitive Therapies and Approaches) programme has been developed to further equip you with the knowledge and skills in Mindfulness-based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT) and Mindfulness-based Approaches (MBA).This programme particularly focuses on the skills required to be ready and competent to teach MBCT/MBA classes for clients. You will also be supported in a safe environment teaching to peers before moving to placements to begin to teach in real world settings under the supervision and guidance of an experienced MBCT/MBA teacher.

The PGDip programme aims to develop your readiness to offer MBCT/MBA to people in a setting specific to your professional orientation. You will develop competence in established evidence-based applications of MBCT/MBA assessed by using the Mindfulness-based Interventions - Teaching Assessment Criteria.

The MSc Psychological Therapies Practice and Research (Mindfulness-based Cognitive Therapies and Approaches) offers you an opportunity to pursue an in depth consideration and critic of a topic relevant to MBCT/MBA. There are two options: a research project or a theoretical research paper.

Our MSc Animal Behaviour is unusual in that it is offered within a Psychology department. This benefits you by providing a strong background in a broad cross-section of research methods used by researchers studying human and animal behaviour, a strong training in statistical methods and multidisciplinary study environment. You will learn how to formulate and test relevant research questions, and critically evaluate the research carried out by others in the field.

The programme will give you an insight into the varied means of performing animal behaviour research in a wide array of locations with wild and (semi-)captive animals – in the wild, laboratory, zoo or under human management. As part of the taught component you will be exposed to lectures and seminar discussions, research talks and discussions with speakers, boost and consolidate your knowledge and skills in statistical data analysis, participate in a one-week residential field course (during the Easter break) and in research skill training sessions. During the course you will continuously develop your abilities in critical analysis of the literature and of scientific evidence, project development, communication and scientific writing.

Fieldwork

The census research projects will see you spending a considerable amount of time in the field collecting data at several key research sites in West Cornwall and interacting with local NGOs (Cornwall Wildlife Trust, South West Lakes Trust).

This programme includes a two week field course in Kenya and will include visits to some of Africa’s largest and most important game reserves, as well as an introduction to some of the day-to-day problems faced by conservation biologists in developing nations. You will study the behaviour of animals in a natural ecological setting with a focus on large mammals, birds and insects. Travel and subsistence costs for this part of the programme are included in the programme fee.

Bioarchaeology is an exciting and fast-advancing field which combines archaeology with branches of the natural sciences to study key topics such as past health and well-being, diet, ecology, subsistence strategies and environmental impacts.

The MSc in Bioarchaeology aims to develop a broad understanding of these issues through the study of human remains. Students on this programme will also have the opportunity to study animal remains, as well as floral and faunal evidence.

The programme develops advanced practical skills in skeletal analysis, making use of the department’s well-provisioned specialist laboratories and reference collections. A particular strength of our provision is that we are able to address the bioarchaeology of both the New and Old Worlds. Those completing the Course acquire the skills necessary to continue into academic research or employment, as an osteologist in field units, museums or Cultural Resources Managament companies.

The programme allows you to specialise in one of two named pathways: Human Osteoarchaeology (physical anthropology and funerary archaeology) or Zooarchaeology (animal bones and other faunal remains).

Learning and teaching

Most of the formal classes that you attend will be based on a mixture of lectures, seminars, and workshops. The precise mix will vary between modules. These aim to outline the principal issues of the module, to explore some detailed issues, and, where relevant, to give you experience of working with a particular technique or data set.
All members of staff are actively engaged in research, both in Britain and abroad, and regularly attend conferences, symposia and workshops. It is through this active engagement in the discipline that we are able to supply top quality teaching by experts in their field and as a result we have a 24/24 grading for our teaching from the Quality Assurance Agency.
In addition to our established palaeobotany, experimental archaeology, and microscopy laboratories, we have a new bioarchaeology lab dedicated to the study of anatomical variation, palaeopathological conditions, and the funerary context of human and animal remains. The laboratory, accompanied by a designated store for the Department's collection of human remains, provides facilities for use by researchers and students for examining skeletal remains recovered from archaeological sites. Equipment includes anatomical casts and demographic reference standards used to determine the sex, age-at-death, stature and body proportions from human remains.

Research areas

Bioarchaeological research at Exeter combines the study of archaeology with branches of the natural and physical sciences to address questions of health and well-being, diet, ecology, subsistence strategies and natural and human-induced environmental impacts in the past.

Our approach is holistic and inter-disciplinary, drawing its inspiration from both definitions of ‘bioarchaeology’: as a study applied to human remains (human osteoarchaeology) and, as originally defined by Grahame Clark, as related to the integration of environmental archaeology, floral and faunal evidence – archaeobotany and zooarchaeology – in archaeological research.
Active field research programmes in North and South America and Eurasia link with extensive laboratory research to address questions of social structure and social organisation, the process of animal and plant domestication, the development of social inequality and power relations, violence and warfare, the rise of élites and craft specialists, and division of labour.

Teaching and assessment

This one-year full-time Masters programme is taught at our Cornwall Campus by the Centre for Ecology and Conservation (http://biosciences.exeter.ac.uk/cec/) ; the fastest growing institute of its kind in the UK. The course boasts a significant research component, with substantial fieldwork opportunities in the UK as well as a field course in Africa. A distinctive and integral feature of our MSc is the high degree of input from conservationists in collaborating governmental and non-governmental organisations. This participation takes a variety of forms, including guest lectures, field visits and specific training courses, but may also include providing research projects in their organisations. Collaborating organisations include: Cornwall Wildlife Trust, Butterfly Conservation, Marine Conservation Society, Natural England, Royal Botanic Gardens Kew and the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (links open in new windows).

The course provides excellent employability, with our alumni moving into careers such as: ecological consultancy, government conservation in UK and overseas, NGO conservation in the UK (Bat Conservation Trust, RSPB, Wildlife Trusts) and overseas and fully funded PhD positions in ecology and conservation.

This programme includes a two week field course in Kenya and will include visits to some of Africa’s largest and most important game reserves, as well as an introduction to some of the day-to-day problems faced by conservation biologists in developing nations. You will study the behaviour of animals in a natural ecological setting with a focus on large mammals, birds and insects. Travel and subsistence costs for this part of the programme are included in the programme fee.

Taught by internationally recognised experts active at the science/policy interface, this interdisciplinary programme examines both scientific and policy-oriented aspects of conservation. Teaching covers the breadth of this field, examining how conservation goals may be achieved under climate change scenarios, in combination with food security requirements, and taking account of social justice. The breadth of the degree gives flexibility to pursue those areas most relevant to your professional development and contains a significant research component supported by leading researchers.

The degree is designed to offer you considerable scope to tailor your studies to focus on the topics you wish to pursue. Integral to the whole programme is extensive liaison with conservation practitioners from a wide range of collaborating governmental and non-governmental organisations such as Butterfly Conservation, Marine Conservation Society and Natural England; and a broad suite of organisations in Africa including Kenya Wildlife Service, Solio Ranch and Wildlife Direct. Key individuals from some of these organisations contribute to classes and field visits and a number of our project students will be placed with such organisations.

A special feature of the programme is the Kenya field trip, which includes visits to some of East Africa’s most famous conservation areas, as well as in-depth discussions with a wide range of stakeholders about synergies and trade-offs between conservation and development. The trip provides you with opportunities to see firsthand how conservation science operates within particular policy contexts.

Perfect environment to study conservation science and policy

This Masters is based at the University of Exeter's Penryn Campus in Cornwall in new buildings with state-of-the-art facilities, in a region facing key challenges in balancing conservation with other goals. Cornwall is an exceptional place in which to study issues related to the environment and sustainability. The county is a perfect living laboratory which offers a diverse range of marine and terrestrial habitats, a wealth of natural resources and creative and resilient communities.

The Penryn Campus is home to the University's Environment and Sustainability Institute (ESI http://www.exeter.ac.uk/esi/) – a £30 million centre leading cutting-edge, interdisciplinary research into solutions to problems of environmental change and enhancing people’s lives by improving their relationship with the environment. As a student on the MSc Conservation Science and Policy you will benefit from the ESI’s interdisciplinary approach to conservation science and policy and will have the unique opportunity to work on real world scenarios and problem solving in this area.
