This Professional Studies (Outdoor Education/Outdoor Learning/Adventure Education) MA is the ideal course for ambitious professionals with a keen interest in developments within their field.

The project-based, work-centred course enables students to develop a critical appreciation of fundamental changes in their profession. All the while, students will work on acquiring the skills necessary to deal with the challenges these changes present. This responsive approach is grounded in the concept of action research, which encourages students to react to and explore issues as and when they emerge within their professional context. This flexible course is carefully structured, with three supervised projects based on a theme related to your field.

You’ll be supported throughout the course with project templates which clearly outline structure, content and the research process.

On this course, you’ll be assigned a project supervisor for each stage. Your supervisor will have expertise in the chosen area so that they can provide you with tailored guidance and support throughout. If necessary, a second supervisor will be introduced.

Students will also take part in research workshops in which they’ll explore particular research themes with other students. As a participant on this course, you’ll enjoy full access to a wide range of electronic resources, as well as additional tutorial support where necessary. It is anticipated that one of the course projects will lead to a joint publication between supervisor and student.

Modules

Each stage of the programme is delivered through a project.

1st Year - PG Cert - Conceptual & Theoretical Discourses
There is the opportunity to consider the debates that constitute the terms of reference for Outdoor Education or Outdoor Learning or Adventure Education within organisations. For example: debates relating to the range and scope of the outdoor industry or field; ideology and outdoor interventions; the changing approaches and influences in education outdoors; the application of theory to Outdoor Education or Outdoor Learning or Adventure Education processes. This is an individual tutorial based course, in person in Plymouth and/or via Skype, telephone or email, whatever suits you best.

2nd Year - PG Dip - Contemporary Contextual Issues
This section will look at the students professional practice and how the policy drivers and process impact the provision of Outdoor Education or Outdoor Learning. This will include exploring the development of policy networks, the role of stakeholders, evaluation of the policy process and concepts and constructions of professionalism.

3rd Year - MA Masters Project - Developmental Considerations
This is an opportunity for the student to engage in a research project about their professional practice in context, with a focus on developmental based project work. For example direct engagement in some aspect of the strategic planning process within the student’s professional area. This may concern multi-agency and partnership work and could focus on participants or staff, pedagogy, programme design and implementation of strategies and initiatives.

Assessment of each stage of the programme will be based on the grade awarded for the completed project, formative assessment will also be provided at two points during the year in order to provide students with an indication of their progress.

Our MSc Sport and Exercise Psychology degree further develops and utilises the skills and techniques required to be a practitioner in sport and/or exercise psychology. The programme provides opportunities to experience the practical nature of being a sport and exercise psychologist, reflecting the requirements for the British Psychological Society (BPS) stage 1 (BPS approval of the curriculum is subject to confirmation) and the British Association of Sport & Exercise Sciences (BASES) supervised experience. In addition the degree will explore contemporary issues and challenges within sport and exercise psychology encompassed by a framework of intervention.

One of the standout features is the applied professional practice module. This module enables the student to engage in a work based learning environment to practice, develop and reflect upon the application of the appropriate skill set, and it’s development, within sport and exercise psychology. This feature will also be attractive to students who are already in employment which will allow them to combine work and study. Furthermore, for students who are not in employment this will provide networking opportunities, as well as professional work based experience.

Graduates of the programme who also have a British Psychological Society (BPS) accredited undergraduate degree can register for stage 2 of the BPS’s qualification in Sport and Exercise Psychology (this is currently subject to BPS accreditation of the programme), which is the route to becoming a BPS chartered Sport and Exercise Psychologist.

Graduates of the programme who have a sport and exercise science background can apply for the British Association of Sport and Exercise Science (BASES) Supervised Experience, which is the route to becoming a BASES Accredited Sport and Exercise Scientist (Psychology), and they can log their placement hours towards this. This progamme also aligns to the professional standards of the Health and Care Professional Council (HCPC).

The programme is underpinned by current research, theoretical discourse and professional practice with specific applied emphasis on developing students further to become practically and ethically competent and confident in the field of sport and exercise psychology.

Sport Rehabilitation is a dynamic profession focusing on understanding, preventing and treating sport and exercise related injuries. It takes an evidence-based approach considering anatomical, physiological, biomechanical, and psychosocial factors. The course aims to provide graduates from a sports science background with the knowledge and application of the musculoskeletal system, enabling them to clinically assess and return athletes to full functional fitness through expertly developed evidence-based rehabilitation programmes. Students will develop key practical skills in our teaching clinic and world class sports science laboratories and we blend this with online technologies to enhance remote study. Intense teaching periods enable students opportunities to apply and develop their knowledge through work-based learning in our sports injury clinic. A minimum of 400 clinical hours of hands-on experience will be obtained in our Sports Therapy and Rehabilitation Clinic.

In addition, students undertake professional work placements with our partners to broaden their experience. Graduates will be eligible to join the British Association of Sport Rehabilitators and Trainers (BASRaT) (pending, subject to validation). Foundation clinical and rehabilitation skills are developed through a blended learning approach. Integral periods of work-based learning and research skills development are embedded in the programme to enable students to apply an evidence-based approach towards sport rehabilitation. Students can also get accreditation to the Federation of Holistic Therapists (FHT). This is a new course starting in 2017 and is currently subject to validation.
