The general aim of this Applied Data Science Postgraduate Master’s programme is to prepare you to apply current and upcoming data science methods and techniques within the health domain on an academic level. To this end you will be trained in doing the full cycle of knowledge discovery research, both by following relevant courses and by doing a research project.

This is the first postgraduate Master’s programme in the Netherlands that does not focus on business analytics, but on the application of data science in the field of health, a fast growing area in which data are quickly becoming increasingly more important. Its multidisciplinary character connects statistics and informatics perspectives onto Applied Data Science on par.

The embedding in the new Utrecht University focus area Applied Data Science provides for an active data science community in which students, researchers, and data scientists from a range of companies will regularly meet and cooperate. It directly leverages the top research in the Faculty of Science, the Faculty of Social and Behavioural Sciences and the Faculty of Medicine.

Artificial intelligence is a fast moving and challenging field. A few examples: natural language processing, for instance in smart phones, has become common use; characters in virtual worlds like computer games and simulations are becoming smarter, leading to more natural, interesting and useful game experiences; there are examples of research that show that human cognitive functions can be enhanced by directly linking the brain to a computer; and, in California there are self-driving cars with sensors and GPS that autonomously drive you to your destination.

Creating functional tissue models with 3D printing technologies: Biofabrication combines advanced fabrication techniques with biological systems to prepare designed tissue constructs.

Tissue constructs can be applied for tissue engineering, as 3D in vitro biologic models or as medical therapeutic products.
Biofabrication is a truly multidisciplinary area of research. It requires an understanding of chemistry, physics, biology, medicine, robotics and computer science. In this respect, few researchers entering the biofabrication field have been trained in such a diverse range of subjects.

Students enrolled in the Biofabrication programme at Utrecht University will complete their coursework required for the degree in Utrecht at Utrecht University / UMC Utrecht, as well as a research project that fills the first year. A total of 60 EC including a research project will be undertaken in Australia in the second year, at either Queensland University of Technology or University of Wollongong. Both institutions have a strong reputation in the field of Biofabrication and are in the forefront of 3D printing with biomaterials. The Master's in Biology of Disease focuses on the translation of disease into a scientifically secure experiment/model, in order to study its underlying mechanisms and reveal potential therapies.

The Master's programme in Biology of Disease offers the opportunity to study disease mechanisms in the broadest sense via internships in pre-clinical and clinical research in medical, biomedical, biological, industrial and veterinary labs; and to focus on more than one clinical specialty enabling you to conduct research projects on different subjects and diseases. Alternatively this programme offers the possibility to focus on cardiovascular research.

This two year research programme comprises theoretical courses, elective courses, seminars, a major and minor research project, and the writing of a Master's thesis. The core component of this two year research programme consists of independently planning and conducting the two research projects, which will take 15 months in total. The minor research project may be completed elsewhere in the Netherlands or abroad; or it may be replaced by a specific profile: Management, Teaching and Communication or Drug Regulatory Sciences. Childrearing is not always easy. The Master's programme in Orthopedagogy emphasises the childrearing needs of children, youth and parents. As a remedial educationalist, you can diagnose, treat and help prevent childrearing and development problems at home and/or in an institution. We offer you a programme with two specialisations:

In the programme you will learn to research practical questions from an orthopedagogical viewpoint. Clinical psychology is always interacting with other disciplines due to the context in which behavioral and health problems arise. This will therefore be a considerable focus of attention.

The clinical Master’s degree offers Dutch-speaking students the opportunity to acquire the NIP’s basic certificate in psycho-diagnostics (BAPD). You can also apply for different postgraduate programmes (Healthcare psychology; in Dutch: GZ-psycholoog) or pursue a doctoral degree. For international students, formal accreditation needs to take place at an individual level by the national union of psychologists.
