It provides a firm grounding in research methods applicable to the study of sustainable agriculture and the intellectual tools for understanding sustainable agriculture systems. The courses combine theoretical approaches and empirically based learning from case studies of real projects and agricultural scenarios.

Teaching will focus on case studies from NRI's corporate experience of looking at how research into agricultural issues, both in the natural and social sciences, can be translated into knowledge and products that have real impact on increasing the effectiveness of agriculture in delivering food security and enhancing livelihoods for all stakeholders. This programme is taught as either a classic one-year programme, or delivered through blended e-learning on a two-year part-time basis.

The degree builds on Pfizer Ltd's 'in house' training programme. It teaches how fundamental science is applied to the discovery and development of medicines. The programme was designed and conceived by industry experts in drug discovery and will be delivered and assessed by subject matter experts from both industry and the university.

The course will comprise of 60 credits at certificate level, 60 credits at diploma level and 60 credits at Master's level; and as such intermediate exit awards are available.

For those students based overseas not wishing to participate in a laboratory-based research project at Medway School of Pharmacy the Extended Dissertation module (at Masters level) is compulsory. Please contact the Department for more details.

Taught content will equip the graduate with the expertise needed to work independently in a range of areas of current commercial plant science, at supervisory or management level, or in applied research. As well as ensuring a thorough grounding in basic science and horticultural technology, the modern molecular biology content is particularly relevant, since new technologies are rapidly entering the commercial arena. The independent research project will be set in a research institution or appropriate local industry, and will be designed around the student's interests and expertise.

The MSc focuses on methods used in the evaluation and improvement of conventional crops that feed the growing world population, but also alternative protected crops and ornamentals along with postharvest management, business and environmental concerns, and plant stress and disease in a changing climate.

This programme provides technology-based graduates with the opportunity to develop an area of technological expertise through a major research project. It also gives students understanding and skills in the methodology of research and the experience of a critical investigation of an approved topic at a high level.

Taught courses are chosen from the School's broad portfolio and should be appropriate to the student's project area. The student must undertake a research methodology course as the basis for the project. The project itself is one of the student's free choices, within the constraints imposed by his or her education, training and experience. It is designed to be very practical, to provide more time than is traditionally allowed for such a project and to emphasise the work-based aspects of the subject matter.

Project proposals must be prepared and agreed by the programme leader before applicants are accepted on to the programme.

- The influence of product temperature upon adhesion to impact zones in process plants

- The design, construction and testing of a test rig to evaluate elutriation segregation; caking problems due to coal-biomass mixes in silos; and approaches for inhibition of cake formation

- The development of a fully automated elutriation tester
