Over recent years there has been a growing awareness and appreciation of the use of project management techniques in a much wider range of business settings. This, in part, is due to increasing competition and a business imperative which recognises that in order to achieve competitive advantage, efficiency and success of each and every project is important.

This exciting new Masters in Applied Project Management contextualises the practice of project management within specific sectors and provides the graduate with the generic skills and competences required to fulfil their business and organisational needs.

The practical approach to teaching and learning is enhanced through added three distinct pathways of Environment, Computing and Enterprise Management and a final dissertation allowing for even further focusing against your choices career sector. There are seven taught modules ranging from Principles of Project Management to Professional Enquiry Methods with two being from your selected pathway.

The part-time Saturday version would see the learner working within their career sector and building upon that knowledge base. To help support learning experience a week long module is offered in April each academic year which additionally helps balance the workload and completion within two years.

Course detail

Format

A variety of teaching methods will be used within course module deliveries especially to capture the applied aspects of project management. In fact the core modules were constructed with teaching variety methods from the outset. The pathways modules need to capture sector expectations and final dissertation offers a wideness of choice.

Assessment

The assessment across the modules has been thought out to offer a balance of assessment approaches of assignment only and some will have a mixture with an examination as an end assessment.

By way of example: The module Strategic Innovation Management initial assignment involves a group undertaking and requires a presentation creation and delivery. The final assignment is an individually developed document requiring to conduct research on the use of projects in an organisation. There is no examination for the modules and assessment weighting is 40/60.

There are only a total of five modules that require examinations as part of their end assessment for the course with maximum of only four examinations required for selected pathways.

Career and study progression

Project Management is the discipline of planning, organising and executing projects effectively and efficiently. As such, project management plays an important role in nearly any organisation, from SMEs through to the largest global corporations. Knowledge and skills gained within this course will enable graduates to take on the role of project manager and/or become an effective member of a project management team.

Outstanding graduates are encouraged to further their study at the level of MPhil and PhD at UWL and at other institutions.

This module provides a generic introduction to and overview of the key principles, methodologies, tools and techniques of project management.

Project Teams (20 credits)
This module is concerned with the structure, development, leadership and management of teams that plan and deliver projects. It deals with relations, interactions and communications within and beyond the team. The particular contexts of high performance, self -directed, dispersed and virtual teams are also considered.

Project Strategy (20 credits)
This module examines the different ways in which businesses and organisations make use of projects. It considers the strategic role of projects in a variety of organisational contexts and analyses methods for project selection and project portfolio management.

You can choose form one of the following three pathways:

Environment pathway

Commercial Management of Construction (20 credits)
This module will provide you with critical appreciation of how commercial projects balance competitiveness against profitability particularly in the value of human resource. The module will cover the procurement and risk management techniques used in the construction industry.

Urban Development (20 credits)
This module will provide you with the critical analytical tools to determine the value of development appraisals, net present value techniques, residual land valuations and the role these play in the acquisition, disposal and evaluation of development opportunities. The module will consider the role construction technology and environmental services related to the projects viability and worth.
The module will consider the project management issues faced by a client over the whole project with the separate built environment module considering the construction phase issues.

Computing pathway

Information Systems Project Management (20 credits)
Project management related to information systems is ever growing in importance within a wide range of private and public sector environments, operating with an ever increasing need for efficient budgetary controls and successful completions on time.

The module provides you with a comprehensive appreciation of the associated good practise for Project Management, the skills and professional techniques used in preparation for their related roles and interactions within or associated to commercial project teams. The life cycle of any project needs to be appreciated by all stakeholders and thus the students within their studies will be further equipped in order to support and encourage others to see successful completion.

Consultancy and Technological Innovation (20 credits)
This module provides you with the skills to understand and operate in the complex multi–sourced environment of supporting business change supported by global technologies and apply these concepts to a real implementation case study using programme management concepts. You will examine the organisational structure of IT including systems integrators and consultancy and overview of the IT Consulting world, its principles and practice using the strategic management of leading edge technology initiatives as a focus area.

Enterprise Management pathway

Management of Organisational Change (20 credits)
This module is concerned with managing change within organisations. Organisational change is a complex process that occurs in specific organisational contexts. The digital world is a complex place, varied in form and distributed, serving different types of stakeholder who use a variety of devices to access information. Specialists who recognise the diversity of business needs and the breadth of technologies and techniques to combat cyber threats, and have a systematic approach to understanding the impact of technology on organisations, are essential to the success of today's and tomorrow's cyber systems.

Equal in importance to securing cyber systems and their supporting technologies, is the management and delivery of content and services through to the users. These systems are in reality socio-technical-economic systems incorporating people, technologies, service providers, content providers, governments (laws, regulations, policies) through to law enforcement. The cyber security specialist is a broadly based professional able to work with technologists, senior management, service providers and suppliers, through to the end users, with their aim to provide secure services and investigate breaches.

Course Summary

This course meets the stage one Health Psychology training requirements developed by the Division of Health Psychology of the British Psychological Society. Our graduates are successful in working/studying in industry, academia, charitable organisations and the NHS.

The course provides a complete grounding in the theory, themes, professional issues and practical skills central to stage one Health Psychology training. The course has established links with health organisations where students gain work experience and carry out research.

Students can carry out health psychology research with the School of Pharmacy at University College London (UCL): research is jointly supervised by Chartered Health Psychologists at UWL and UCL. UCL School of Pharmacy is one of the most highly rated pharmacy schools in the UK.

You will be encouraged to present your work at health psychology conferences. Students who successfully complete the course have fulfilled the stage one training requirements which are a first step towards Chartered Psychologist status and registration with the Health and Care Professions Council as a Health Psychologist.

When does the course run

The full-time course runs on Monday and Tuesday each week for two semesters followed by time to complete the dissertation. Part-time students attend on Mondays or Tuesdays depending on which stage of the course they are at. We offer you the flexibility to switch from full-time to part-time.
