Students entering the Structured Postgraduate Programme in Biology will be under the supervision of an experienced researcher. All academic staff members in the Biology Department are experienced and active researchers and can supervise research students. In most but not all instances, your stipend, university fees, consumable, equipment and travel costs will be paid from a research grant from a national or international grant agency or charity. Your supervisor usually competitively obtains this grant, but students can also obtain their own scholarships.

Upon entering the programme each student will be assigned two additional mentors, an Advisor and an Assessor. The Advisor provides additional mentorship for the student throughout the programme and is someone the student can discuss issues with in addition to their supervisor. The Assessor is a member of staff who will provide an annual constructive critique of the students work programme and will aid, together with the Advisor, in outlining possible future research plans.
In addition to the research project, training is provided through compulsory attendance of a variety of generic and transferable skills as well as subject specific modules. For example, the established Postgraduate Certificate in Teaching and Learning will provide research students with experience in practical class demonstrating and teaching and learning methodologies. Training in subject specific skills is provided through modules offered either through the Biology Department or as part of the Dublin Region Higher Education Alliance (DRHEA). Advanced modules in many life science topics are already established within the Biomedical Sciences and Chemistry strands of the DRHEA provides a variety of to students on the programme. Finally, research students will be encouraged to attend at least one international conference during their programme, at which they will be expected to present an oral or poster presentation.

Maynooth University (MU) in Ireland; the University of St. Andrews (UStA) in Scotland; and Université de Lorraine (UL) in France are offering a two-year Master Programme in Dependable Software Systems (DESEM).

Our objective is to provide students with the knowledge, skill and in-depth technical understanding of the key concepts required to design and build dependable software systems. This will be achieved by bringing together the theory and practice of software development and, in particular, through the transfer of knowledge from the classroom via research driven and commercially relevant projects.

The double-degree will be achieved over two years, through the allocation of 120 ECTS. Students will study in two of the three partner universities, achieving a diploma supplement from each university in which they accomplish 60 ECTS.

Given the wider development of Citizen GIS and an increased public awareness and knowledge of the power and value of spatial data, vastly increased amounts of such data from different sources are now available to researchers. However, in order to turn these data into useful information, they must be efficiently managed, processed and analysed before being displayed in a comprehensible format. Geographical Information Systems and the associated field of Remote Sensing greatly aid us in such tasks. The course is equally split between both parts - GIS and Remote Sensing - with four core module introducing the theory and practice of both subject at an introductory and advanced level. Geographical Information Systems or GIS as they are better known, are widely used in a wide variety of subject fields across the physical and social sciences and even in the humanities, with applicability in everything from archaeology and astronomy to geomorphology and globalisation to soil science and social planning. Remote Sensing – the analysis and interpretation of aerial and satellite imagery – has transformed the manner in which we view the Earth. The synoptic view of the Earth that it has given us has greatly improved our understanding of atmospheric and oceanic processes, sustained environmental management and the interaction of humans with the natural world. It is now a standard research tool in many fields such as geology, geography, pollution control, agriculture and climatology. Additional optional modules in Programming, Spatial Databases and Remote Sensing of the Subsurface are also available to students who want to develop the technical side more fully, though the course has a strong applied flavour throughout. In addition, all students complete a work placement in the Summer months which allows them to gain valuable practical experience to test and develop the skills learnt across the course.

The course consists of 6 modules, 5 of which are compulsory. Two of these cover the theoretical concepts underpinning GIS and Remote Sensing. Two other modules involve gaining the theoretical and technical skills necessary to become proficient in the management and analysis of spatial data. This course develops the capacity for participants to understand how IT operates both as a function and as a key interrelated resource within an organisational context. Course Structure

Information Technology (IT) Management insights are developed through a series of modules exploring how to manage IT and create value from IT using knowledge from the expertise of the Innovation Value Institute. It creates value within a wider context of both the business itself and the wider world, thus we also provide modules on functional and organisational (e.g. finance, HRM, organisation theory, strategy and marketing amongst others) aspects of business. Learning from modules is applied in practice through a business research project/dissertation.

Future career prospects include careers in IT Management, Consultancy, and IT-enabled Business Transformation in a wide range of roles in all types of organizations. The breadth and depth of the programme, plus its in-company research dimension and its integration with the IT-CMF renders the graduate attractive to an array of future employers. Overview

Societies such as Ireland are adjusting very rapidly to change in the external and internal environments.
The aim of this MA is to interrogate the political, economic and social dimensions of change in transitional societies, using Ireland as a key point of reference. We hope to stimulate students to think about the role that sociological analysis can play in helping to advance solutions to the current social and economic challenges.

Course Structure

The taught programme is built around three components: a core theoretical module, substantive courses, and methods courses. Modules include societies in transition, debating big ideas, analytical reasoning in the social sciences, quantitative research and qualitative methods. Beyond this, the researching and writing of a thesis constitutes 30 credits. Each module comprises on average 12 two hour seminars.

In the course of the MA in Sociology (Societies in Transition), students will gain a deeper, more complex understanding of the economic, social, political and cultural dimensions of Irish society in comparative perspective. Typically the MSc by research takes two years and the student must write a thesis under the supervision of a member of the academic staff. In addition students must take a minimum of 10 credits in taught modules (at least 5 in generic/transferable modules and at least 5 in subject specific/advanced specialist modules) from the Structured PhD programme.

Master of Science in Mathematical Science
Students take modules in Mathematical Physics and Mathematics. At least 4 of the modules (at least 45 ECTS) must be taken at the Masters level (level 6 in Mathematical Physics and level 5 in Mathematics). The remaining credits may be made up at levels 4, 5 or 6.

Course Structure

All module choices are subject to the approval of the Head of Department. Level 6 choices for Mathematical Physics are listed below. For other choices see the Mathematics Department modules at level 5 (see MSc in Mathematics MHR52) and Mathematical Physics Department modules at level 4. One of the Masters level modules may be replaced by a minor thesis subject to the approval of the Head of Department. Total credits 60. Modules include Groups, Geometry and Topology for Physics, Quantum Field Theory, Differential Geometry, General Relativity, and advanced special topics in Applied Mathematics and Theoretical Physics.
