Course detail

The academic study of clinical linguistics is concerned with how language is affected by a range of acquired and developmental communication disorders, and the role of language in the subsequent assessment and management of these conditions. There is a focus on how language can break down or be changed by these conditions, and an examination of good quality evidence that evaluates interventions designed to ameliorate well-being and skills of affected individuals. There is a focus on how specialists assess, diagnose and differentiate between communication disorders. There is a focus on the role of Speech and Language Therapists working with patients throughout the lifespan, and also how educational psychologists work with children to improve educational outcomes for those with communication disorders.

You will develop an advanced understanding of techniques and processes applicable to your own research or advanced scholarship. You will also complete a dissertation on a topic related to a subject which is of interest to you. You will be taught by our team of Language & Linguistics experts and become part of our expanding Languages & Linguistics community.

Format

The programme is designed to be studied either full-time over 12 months or part-time over a maximum of five years. If you are unable to complete the full Master’s degree or are interested in certain modules, you may work for the intermediate awards of Postgraduate Certificate in Clinical Linguistics or Diploma in Clinical Linguistics.

This is an advanced programme that considers the applied and multi-disciplinary dimensions of sport and exercise science. State-of-the-art laboratory and field based equipment will support you to develop research and sport science support skills. The teaching team have significant research and applied expertise in the subject, but also in terms of innovative approaches to learning and teaching in sport and exercise science. There will also be the opportunity to undertake relevant vocational qualifications and work placement while on the programme. This will be tailored to your needs through working with a tutor and be aligned with the accreditation competencies of the British Association for Sport and Exercise Sciences (BASES).

Course detail

This programme aims to develop an advanced multidisciplinary understanding of contemporary issues that apply to sport and exercise science from both a theoretical and practical perspective. The programme is for individuals holding a sport science related undergraduate
degree or those with significant practical experience and qualifications in sport who want to consider the application of scientific principles to their work.

The learning activities and assessments on the programme are highly applied and focussed upon developing students’ ability to evaluate critically the quality and impact of their own work. A key aspect is the engagement with existing academic literature and the production of research to provide evidence that can be used to inform sport and exercise science support work.

There is scope for negotiation in terms of practical work and focus of assessment on modules depending upon individual experience or areas of interest. For example, on the Performance Analysis module this could mean use of 3D modelling of a closed skill in the laboratory or utilising GPS technology to track movement of an entire team in a field-based setting.

• Performance analysis – using advanced performance analysis techniques to collect data in specific settings to inform athletic needs.

• Research Methods – become informed consumers and producers of research in a range of paradigms and using a variety of approaches.

• Training Interventions – investigation of training intervention and physiological adaptation for the enhancement of performance.

• Psychological Dimensions – appreciate existing psychological concepts and how they can be used to promote behaviour change in sport performance and coaching setting with diverse audiences.

• Research paper - Produce a written manuscript of publishable quality that addresses a research question relevant to strength and conditioning.

Format

This is a full-time course, you will undertake four 30 credit modules and a 60 credit dissertation over a 12 month period.

A part-time student will normally do two 30-credit modules in year one, with two 30-credit modules and a 60-credit dissertation in year 2.

Work placements

Work-related learning is a key part of the activities and assessments on modules. In order to effectively undertake these tasks students will need to draw upon experiences from employment, continuous personal development (CPD) or a work placement. There are opportunities to undertake relevant CPD and work placement while on the programme.

Completion of a Personal and Academic Development Profile (PADP), through the academic tutor system, will help to identify which opportunities individuals could access to support their working towards accreditation with the British Association for Sport and Exercise Sciences (BASES).

An example of the types of opportunities available through our partnerships would be experience in clinical exercise
physiology supporting delivery of NHS based testing and exercise classes or completion of a Register of Exercise Professionals (REPs) Level 4 qualification facilitated by YSJ Active. Such experiences and skills will support the programme of academic study by offering tangible examples for application of theory, critical analysis and reflective practice.

This is a problem-based learning programme which has been designed to enable students to consider humans as occupational being and the complex, dynamic relationship between health, well-being, participation and occupation. The MSc in Promoting Health in Long-Term Conditions includes two specialist modules that focus on the related areas of Multi-Professional Approaches and Health Coaching.

It also includes three research-based modules that emphasise the development of skills that allow practitioners to critically appraise sources of evidence and apply it in order to bring about improvement within a health and social care setting.

The programme aims to provide education that meets the changing needs of health and social care professionals, in particular to demonstrate a critical awareness of a range of complex issues associated with long-term conditions and behaviour change and critically evaluate evidence in this area so as to improve practice.

The MSc provides students with the unique opportunity to study developmental psychology across both childhood and adolescence. Drawing on the research interests and expertise of the teaching team the MSc will expose students to contemporary issues in developmental psychology. The team has links with local child and youth based organisations and students will be able to engage with professionals working in related fields.

Course detail

The programme provides a solid grounding for students wishing to pursue a career working with children or young people or to further develop the knowledge base of individuals already working in a related field. Theories of developmental psychology will be explored and you will be encouraged to consider them in an applied context. You will be given the opportunity to study topics such as: developmental, emotional and behavioural problems, relationships in childhood and adolescence and cognitive development in the context of legal, health and educational settings. Your studies will culminate in the undertaking of a research project in an area of development that is of particular interest to you.

The MSc is suitable for students who wish to use it as a stepping stone to either (a) a PhD; (b) a professional doctorate; or (c) employment in related areas (eg education; social work, third sector, public sector).

Format

Full-time students will take two 30-credit modules per semester, followed by a 60-credit dissertation in the spring and summer.

Part-time students take one module in each semester in years 1 and 2, and undertake the dissertation in year 3.

The teaching team have significant applied expertise in the subject and have developed innovative, technology enhanced approaches to learning and teaching in coaching. There will also be the opportunity to undertake relevant vocational qualifications and work placement while on the programme. This will be tailored to your needs through working with a tutor and be aligned with the SportCoach UK Level 4 competencies.

Course detail

The Sport Coaching will utilise and evaluate concepts from a range of disciplines including sport psychology, athlete development and movement analysis. This aims to challenge your approach to coaching and provide a broader perspective to support children and talented performers. The programme is for individuals holding a sport coaching related undergraduate degree or those with significant practical coaching experience and qualifications who want to consider the application of scientific principles to their work as a coach.

The learning activities and assessments on the programme are highly applied and focussed upon developing students’ ability to evaluate critically the quality and impact of their own work. A key aspect is the engagement with existing academic
literature and the production of research to provide evidence that can be used to inform coaching practice.

There is scope for negotiation in terms of practical work and focus of assessment on modules depending upon individual experience or areas of interest. For example, on the Psychological Dimensions of Coaching module this could mean development of an individualised psychological skills intervention for a high level athlete or an educational workshop for a youth team with a range of needs and abilities.

• Athlete Development – appreciate the inter-play between growth and maturation and use physiological and psychological markers to develop performance during growth.

Placements

Work-related learning is a key part of the activities and assessments on modules. In order to effectively undertake these tasks students will need to draw upon experiences from employment, continuous personal development (CPD) or a work placement. There are opportunities to undertake relevant CPD and work placement while on the programme.

Completion of a Personal and Academic Development Profile (PADP), through the academic tutor system, will help to identify which opportunities individuals could access to support their working towards the UKCC Level 4 generic competencies.

An example of the types of opportunities available through our partnerships would be a movement coaching experience with North Yorkshire FA Girls Centre of Excellence or a Level 3 coaching qualification facilitated by YSJ Active. Such experiences and skills will support the programme of academic study by offering tangible examples for application of theory, critical analysis and reflective practice.

The programme is for individuals holding a sport science related undergraduate degree or those with significant practical experience and qualifications in strength and conditioning who want to consider the application of scientific principles to their work.

A key aspect is the engagement with existing academic literature and the production of research to provide evidence that can be used to inform strength and conditioning practice.

Format

How the programme is delivered is just as important as what is delivered for the development of appropriate Masters level skills and understanding. The teaching and assessment on the programme aims to actively engage students in a variety of learning activities.

The delivery model is based upon a single, all day study day per week. This model of delivery is aimed to support students who are in employment while undertaking the programme. The study days will be designed to engage you in interdisciplinary debate, professional practice, critical review of research, generation of feedback, presentations and data collection.

Full-time students will undertake four 30 credit modules and a 60 credit dissertation over a 12 month period.

Part-time students will normally do two 30-credit modules in year one, with two 30-credit modules and a 60-credit dissertation in year 2.
