This master programme aims to provide highly employable analytical scientists who not only have a thorough understanding of the key techniques within the discipline but also have successfully completed an extended project either set in an industrial context or carried out in the laboratories of one of our industrial partners.
As a student on the programme, you will benefit from our research expertise and our links with industries that provide the foundation for placement opportunities. All students on this MSc will undertake a 30 week placement with an industrial context, either in Keele University’s laboratories or at the industrial partner’s premises, which will ultimately boost your employability skills.
The focus of this master's degree is very much on each student acquiring the scientific knowledge, the technical skills and the wide range of professional skills to enable them to start their career working with confidence in an industrial or international laboratory context.
- To engender and develop an enthusiasm for analytical science and provide an intellectually stimulating and beneficial learning experience
- To provide an education to master’s level in key areas of analytical science, principally in chromatography, spectroscopy, microscopy and related techniques, and including the analysis and interpretation of experimental and digital data
- To provide a thorough knowledge and experience of techniques relevant to the analytical sciences and their practical application across a range of relevant materials and applications
- To provide a critical awareness of and engagement with current methods and techniques within the analytical sciences, some of which is at, or informed by, the forefront of the discipline
- To develop confidence in practical, analytical, problem-solving and quantitative skills within the context of analytical science
- To demonstrate the abilities and skills necessary to research, devise, plan, execute and report on an original investigation or research project within the discipline
- To demonstrate a high level of scientific knowledge and skills, including transferable skills, in a UK-based or international workplace setting
- To be able to deal with complex issues, including ethical issues, both systematically and creatively, make sound judgements in the absence of complete data, and communicate outcomes clearly to specialist and non-specialist audiences;
- To demonstrate independence and originality in tackling and solving problems, and act autonomously in planning and implementing tasks at a professional or equivalent level
- To demonstrate the qualities and transferable skills necessary for employment requiring:
the exercise of initiative and personal responsibility,

The first semester is spent at Keele studying modules on research skills, industrial context and both the theory and practice of analytical techniques, principally those based on chromatography, spectroscopy and imaging/ microscopy.
The extended individual project is carried out over semesters two and three, either at Keele or in the laboratories of an industrial partner. The location and nature of the project will be decided at the start of the programme and, for each individual student, many of the skills they develop in semester one will be studied and demonstrated in the context of their project topic.
These include literature review, research context, which includes planning, financial and ethical considerations, and science communication. There will also be lectures and laboratory classes aimed at extending your understanding of analytical techniques applied to industrial materials and problems and how such measurements are quality assured.
You will also develop the ability to use a range of data analysis methods and databases to interpret the results of your work and be able to write informative reports and use other means to communicate these outcomes to others.
The assessment of the extended project will include a written report, as well as participation in a post-graduate student symposium where you will present your work to both staff and students.

A broad range of teaching methods are employed including lectures, laboratory classes, problems classes, workshops and informal tutorials. As this is a post-graduate course there is an emphasis on tutor-guided, independent work. During the extended project whether undertaken at Keele or within an industrial laboratory, you will work both on your own tasks and in a team context with others and this will be evidenced through your project portfolio.
Over the whole programme the assessment tasks will be set in the context of the work of a professional analytical scientist and will provide a variety of challenges within which you can demonstrate the development of your knowledge and skills.
All academic staff operate an open-door policy and are happy to provide support, advice and guidance to all students subject to their availability.
There may be additional living costs associated with the industrial project placement part of this programme which would depend on the nature and location of the placement and the individual circumstances and choices of the student. These would be discussed with the course tutor prior to enrolment. There would also be general costs for text books, inter-library loans, photocopying and printing, for example.

Applicants who have not had their secondary or tertiary education through the medium of English are expected to have attained the equivalent of an IELTS score of at least 6.5 from an IELTS provider, which is approved by Keele University. Our MSc in Geoscience Research is a research-focused postgraduate taught master's course with industry and international placement opportunities designed for a career in research, academia or a discipline related work setting.
The course consists of six modules spread over three semesters, including an extensive research project in geoscience, environmental science or physical geography.
Project areas range from applied and environmental geophysics to igneous petrology, volcanology, Quaternary environments, palaeoclimates, palaeoceanography, biogeochemistry, landscape ecology, sedimentology, palaeontology, renewable and alternative energy, and petroleum geoscience.
A distinct feature of this master’s programme is the opportunity for UK students to complete a placement at one of several European, North American and Asian partner institutions, all of which have established research links with Keele staff. However, as a UK student, you can also choose to carry out your research project here at Keele or in collaboration with local or UK-based industry. The principal aim of this Masters course is to develop your generic and specific research skills in an area of the Geosciences or related scientific disciplines, which will enhance your employment prospects. On completion of the programme you will:
- Have a systematic understanding of knowledge, and a critical awareness of current problems and/or new insights, much of which is at, or informed by, the forefront of the chosen research area in Geosciences;
- Gain a conceptual understanding to evaluate critically current research and advanced scholarship in the discipline area;
- Be able to evaluate methodologies and develop critiques of them and, where appropriate, to propose new hypotheses;
- Possess developed scientific skills and knowledge, and transferable skills, in a UK-based or international workplace setting;
- Have a comprehensive understanding of techniques applicable to your own research;
- Attain organisational and commercial awareness.
For those students undertaking a placement/research project in Europe the work and achievement on the programme will be documented in the EU Europass, a record of achievement signed by all parties. All students are required to pursue the University’s ‘Realise’ scheme which enables them to identify their personal and professional skills and development needs.
The MSc programme is full-time for 12 months, starting in September.
The programme comprises six modules including a research project/placement which is undertaken either at Keele University or on placement with a host institution overseas:
- Research Skills (30 credits)
- Literature Review (15 credits)
- Modern Language Module* or Academic English for Postgraduate Students** or Geoscience Option Module*** (15 credits)
- Research Project Design and Management (30 credits)
- Dissertation (90 credits)
*Students undertaking their research project at a host institution overseas will choose a modern language module or a language and culture module for their international placement.
**International students for whom English is not their first language will take Academic English for Postgraduate Students to further improve their English language skills.
*** UK/Native English speaking international students undertaking their research project at Keele University or a host institution in the UK can take a selected Geoscience option module relevant to their research area. These may include: Natural Hazards; Glaciers & Glacial Geomorphology; Global Environmental Change; Water Resources; Hydrological & Engineering Geology; Structure and Geodynamics; Economic Geology; Advanced Topics in Sedimentology; Exploration Geophysics for the Hydrocarbon Industry; Petroleum Geology; Volcanic and Magmatic Processes.
You will be taught by experienced, well qualified and enthusiastic staff. All of the staff are research active within the discipline, accomplished at working on research funded work both nationally and internationally. The programme team are enthusiastic to share their teaching, research and professional experience to help you achieve success in your studies.
You will complete formal assessment on all modules. Assessments will include presentations, reflective diary, reports, reviews, portfolio and a dissertation. During your placement this will include keeping an extensive record of the training attended and skills obtained, with a reflective report (for the research training portfolio), as well as a dissertation on the project undertaken during the placement.
The research project/dissertation is based on the submission of a 20,000-25,000 word report that is undertaken in conjunction with an academic supervisor and, where appropriate, an industrial collaborator.
There will be additional costs in terms of living expenses, travel and insurance related with the placement if you choose to undertake your research project with an overseas host institution. The amount required will be dependent on the cost of living associated with certain countries.
UK Students choosing a placement research project in an EU member state will be eligible to apply for an ERASMUS scholarship.

If you have ever spent some time in hospital, you are probably unaware that you were the beneficiary of medical devices that have been designed and developed by Medical Engineering Designers. Everything from the bed you lie on to the MRI scanner that shows your insides on a screen, to the blood pressure monitor, to the scalpel that cuts your skin is known as a Medical Device and will have had input from Medical Engineering Designers. Even if you have a blood pressure monitor at home, this is still a medical device and will have been designed by a Medical Engineering Designer. The aim of the MSc in Medical Engineering Design is to convert you into a Medical Engineering Designer so that you can work in this highly regulated design discipline.
Teaching takes place at the Guy Hilton Research Centre, a dedicated research facility located on the Royal Stoke University Hospital site, and also at the main University Campus. Because this is a “conversion” course you need not have an engineering degree to apply. You must have a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics) based degree, but that could be anything from Biomedical Science, through Forensic Science, to Computer Science. Of course, if you have an engineering degree you can still apply.
We welcome applications with a first or second-class degree (or equivalent) in a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics) discipline. We also welcome enquiries from people with other professional qualifications acceptable to the University.
