Computer science has an ever-greater influence on our lives, and the technological breakthroughs of today shape the way we live tomorrow. Opportunities continue to grow for highly skilled practitioners, and the taught Masters course allows you to make great advancements on your existing skills and knowledge. By the end of the programme you will be equipped to thrive in one of the fastest moving industries in the world.

You will learn specialist computer science techniques and fundamental theories, but you’ll also have the opportunity to put this knowledge into practice by developing applications and working with real software. We cover a range of topics, including real time graphics and computational science, and you can choose from options including artificial intelligence, robotics and visualisation – built upon a solid foundation of good programming skills.

The course begins each September each year and lasts twelve months. There are two trimesters of taught modules, followed by an individual dissertation project during the third trimester. There is an option to take an extra trimester – immediately before the dissertation, adding an extra three months of study but letting you gain insights into industry through a module based on commercial practice, typically working with commercial clients and software.

The Department of Computer Science creates an excellent experience for students, with a supportive student community. We have an international reputation for our research activities, with a strong record of industrial and public grant funding. We are also affiliated with Microsoft’s DreamSpark programme, which allows you to access the latest Microsoft operating systems and development software for home use. Once registered with the department, you can download the software free of charge.

Study information

Forensic science is a multidisciplinary activity that relies on chemical and analytical techniques to provide invaluable evidence from investigations of disasters, accidents and criminal activities. You will have access to up-to-the minute biomaterials, biomechanics and physiological measurement testing equipment as well as scanning technology including CT, ultrasound and laser.

This MSc is the only programme in the UK entirely focused on the imaging of cancer and has been purpose-built to meet a demand for expert researchers and clinicians. Medical imaging is central to the management of cancer, and this course has been designed to cover all aspects of imaging, from basic physics to image analysis. It also aims to give a solid grounding in current concepts of cancer biology and therapy as they apply ‘bench to bedside’.

Designed in close collaboration with a leading team of radiologists, medical physicists, oncologists and research specialists, the programme takes a theoretical and a practical approach to ensure it provides you with the specialist knowledge and skills required.

A key part of the programme is the study of real patient data and there are opportunities for project work in state-of-the-art clinical facilities for oncology imaging at both Hull Royal Infirmary and Castle Hill Hospital. You can also undertake preclinical research in the University's PET (Positron Emission Tomography) Research Centre, a recently completed cutting edge facility that hosts the only research-dedicated cyclotron in the UK, along with extensive radiochemistry provision and preclinical PET-CT and SPECT-CT scanners.

This MSc has been developed in conjunction with the British Association of Cardiovascular Prevention and Rehabilitation for healthcare professionals and people aspiring to work in the rapidly evolving field of cardiovascular rehabilitation.

You are supported by teaching staff who are active in research that is critical to our understanding of cardiovascular health. The programme is designed for people already working in the field, as well as students without a professional background.

All students receive a grounding in the theory and practice of cardiovascular rehabilitation, and you will apply this knowledge to real life settings. We have strong links with the NHS and the City Healthcare Partnership. Heart patients come to the University twice a week and are involved in our research, which currently includes a UK study to look at the benefits of high intensity training to heart health.

We are currently seeking accreditation to allow students to register for the BACPR exercise instructor training qualification, permitting them to work directly with cardiac patients undertaking structured exercise training programmes in the UK.

The programme is available at postgraduate certificate, postgraduate diploma and masters level. It is designed to allow flexible study to enable professionals to continue working

Study information

The course combines theory and practice to give students the knowledge and skills to work directly with patients undergoing cardiovascular rehabilitation in the community. Students will undertake a clinical placement and will also gain advanced academic skills and knowledge to undertake an extended research project.

The MSc is a 45 week programme of full-time study although different levels of award are available:

  • Postgraduate certificate: 3 x 20 credit taught modules taken over an academic year (part-time)
  • Postgraduate diploma: 6 x 20 credit taught modules taken over an academic year
  • Masters degree: Successful completion of the postgraduate diploma stage allows progression to the masters stage which consists of a research project and dissertation written up as a journal article submitted, where possible, to a relevant peer-reviewed national/international academic journal

An increasing awareness of mental health issues has created a growing and substantial need, both locally and nationally, for more mental health practitioners which this MSc programme has been designed to help meet.

It offers an advanced grounding in the psychology of adult mental health and is designed to provide knowledge and experience relevant to a career as a mental health practitioner. The course paves the way to train as a chartered health psychologist, but it is important to note that it does not confer a licence to practise.

You will strengthen your research skills and learn what is required to practise professionally. Students gain an understanding of the backdrop of current thinking on the nature of mental health, its psychological and neurological causation, and the best evidence-based interventions. You will learn how to apply this knowledge to treat a variety of mental health problems.

The teaching staff bring a depth of experience to this course which our students have always valued. The programme is enriched by our close working relationships with the Hull Clinical Psychology Training Programme, and with local health and social care services.

Study information

Study is full-time over one year and comprises two semesters of taught modules. One module during the second semester includes a placement, followed by an individual empirical research project supervised by a member of staff over the summer.

Students are taught how to design, plan and conduct health related research and how to evaluate papers, theories, findings and methods used within health psychology. Learning takes place in lectures, seminars, laboratories and through directed personal study.

This course has been built from the ground up to enhance students’ progress to becoming chartered psychologists. Students are taught the core competencies required for a career in mental health.
