COURSE CONTENT

THE SUBJECT

Even in the current economic climate, the demand for Masters level Aerospace Engineering graduates has remained strong and continues to grow.

To facilitate postgraduate education in an era of rapidly evolving technology an MSc in Advanced Aerospace Engineering will be delivered by the School of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at Queen's.

This novel program will augment the undergraduate education of those who complete it through a combination of advanced scientific knowledge, interpersonal, research and management skills. It will provide postgraduate training for Bachelors degree and PhD students and will provide a pool of highly-qualified MSc graduates for recruitment into industry and to PhD study.

This will be achieved through the delivery of masters level taught elements as well as the completion of novel, industrially relevant research projects.

PROGRAMME DETAILS

Students must take and pass taught modules equivalent to 120 CAtS points and complete a dissertation, which is equivalent to 60 CATS points.

Taught elements may be selected from a list which includes novel modules on aircraft maintenance management and digital manufacturing. The normal load is 60 CATS points per semester.

The programme is available for both full-time and part-time modes of study. Part-time students will take 2 or 3 modules per semester, with all 120 CATS points being completed within 3 years.

PROGRAMME DELIVERY

Formal lectures are presented, but students will also acquire knowledge and understanding experientially through assignments as well as individual and group project work.

Assessment is based on written examinations, coursework and oral presentations by both individuals and groups.

The School provides a supportive learning environment with an emphasis on IT provision and the use of advanced engineering simulation platforms.

Mechanical Engineers fulfil important roles in many industries including power, transport, aerospace, manufacturing, marine, and medical devices. Demand for Masters level Mechanical Engineering graduates continues to grow globally.

Queen's University is offering an MSc in Advanced Mechanical Engineering comprising modules from its internationally recognised and accredited MEng course.

A broad range of modules is available with a strong foundation in physical science and numerical analysis. Topics include advanced materials, structures and dynamics, power and energy, design and managment.

Modules have an emphasis on industrial application and are delivered by internationally recognised academic staff with strong industrial research links.

The aims of the programme are:

1. To support students in the development of their intellectual and practical skills through the study and interpretation of cultural heritage artefacts, their historic societal significance and relationship with the landscape and the wider environment in the past and the present.

2. To demonstrate how geo-spatial technologies and techniques (including GIS, scanning and digitisation) play a central role in the recording, analysis, interpretation and management of cultural heritage across a range of scales from excavated items, archaeological sites, and paper records to historic buildings, monuments and their landscapes.

WHY QUEEN'S?

In the new programme the internationally recognised expertise within GAP with regard to the development and application of digitisation and scanning technologies will be more fully used and integrated into the student learning experience.

The integration of these skills with wider academic expertise in Archaeology and the Centre for Archaeological Fieldwork (CAF), and Geography and the Centre for Data Digitisation and Analysis (CDDA) will create a unique 'heritage' focused programme in which students will experience heritage in its widest context and will have the opportunity to acquire and practice a wide range of geo-spatial skills and explore the conceptual issues associated with their application.

ASSESSMENT & FEEDBACK

Teaching is achieved through various combinations of lectures, seminars, practical classes and fieldwork and is supported by intensive self-guided independent learning. All assessment is coursework based and will be individually undertaken. The dissertation submission is an independent piece of research undertaken by each student under the supervision of an academic member of staff. Both formative and summative feedback will be given through, as appropriate, oral and written means. The pass mark for all assessments is 50 per cent. Students must obtain an overall 50 per cent pass mark for this taught programme (five modules) before progression from the PG Diploma to Masters.

The one-year full-time taught MSc Accounting and Finance is open to graduates with an accounting, finance or related first degree. Science and engineering graduates are also eligible for admission to the programme subject to successful completion of a preliminary one week intensive course in Accounting run in the middle of September.

Employability and Careers

The programme is designed to provide students with the academic knowledge and skills necessary to obtain employment with leading accounting and financial institutions or government agencies. Graduates from the MSc in Finance have been very successful securing jobs in the following areas: banking, fund management, broking, program trading, management, corporate finance, economic research and financial regulation. These careers will also be available to Accounting and Finance graduates plus those in corporate finance and investment analysis that involve detailed analysis of accounting information for valuation purposes.

Accounting and Security Valuation
This module provides a framework for assessing the usefulness of accounting information and accounting regulation for external users and management. Theoretical and practical accounting issues will be highlighted by considering specific accounting issues. The usefulness of financial statement information for valuation purposes will be examined and explored through the use of case studies and statistical analysis of share price and accounting data.

Research Methods in Finance
This module is designed to give students both theoretical and practical experience of statistical and econometric techniques. The module will acquaint students with a range of modern econometric techniques, which are an essential part of modern advanced empirical research in accounting and finance.

Corporate Finance
The aim of this module is to familiarise students with the primary theoretical and empirical issues confronting the modern corporation when making decisions about investment, capital structure, dividends and mergers.

January – April

Accounting and Capital Markets
This module integrates material in the accounting and securities valuation module with investment management decision making. The main areas covered include the theoretical economic underpinnings of capital markets, the role of firms’ disclosure in equity markets, the role of information intermediaries, value investing, and market microstructure.

Performance Management and Governance
The module explores the role and application of strategic performance management and governance in organisations. Theoretical and practical performance management and governance issues will be examined in both businesses and not-for profit organizations (NFPOs) primarily through the use of published research papers. Through this, the usefulness of a variety of research methods will be examined, including qualitative research utilising case studies and interviews.

Plus a choice of ONE of the following modules:

International Finance
This module is designed to develop a rigorous understanding of international financial markets. Emphasis is placed on the theoretical basis for pricing such assets as forward exchange rates. Recent international monetary events such as the establishment of the euro are studied extensively.

Options, Futures and Other Derivative Securities
This module provides students with a rigorous theoretical understanding of derivative instruments. The course includes the following topics: the theory of futures markets; futures contract pricing; pricing of interest rate and stock index futures; the theory of option pricing.

Money and Banking
This module provides students with an understanding of modern banking and other financial institutions. The emphasis is placed on policy issues such as: the regulation of financial institutions; the determination of the value and quantity of both private and fiat money; the proper role of central banking, government macroeconomic policies, affecting output and employment; and fixed verses floating exchange rates.

April – June

Dissertation
Students are assigned supervisors and have to undertake an original piece of empirical accounting or finance research. The dissertation will be approximately 12,000 – 15,000 words and must be submitted by the end of September.

This Masters programme comprises Level 7 modules, which are delivered through a range of blended learning strategies. A substantial proportion of the content is delivered through on-line methods, which supports the philosophy of the programme that it is open to local, national and international applicants that are registered health or social care practitioners and are interested in undertaking postgraduate study. Students complete an agreed range of optional and specialist modules, generating new ideas for improvements in practice. Then, through their dissertation, they have an opportunity to critically review in greater detail innovative or emerging areas of their professional work.

We start with a semester of formal lectures (2 x 5 week blocks) and assocaiated assignments covering: Behavioural development; Motivation and sensory systems; Evolution and behaviour; Pain, stress and welfare; Navigation; Cognition; Endocrines and pheromones; Communication and Welfare of farm, companion and zoo animals; Behaviour and conservation; Fear and sterotypies and Practical measures for enhancing welfare. We also have visits to Belfast Zoological Gardens, Castle Espie Wildfowl Centre and Farms. In semester two we cover practical topics that include defining and recording behaviour, experimental design and analyses, presentation of results in various formats and getting to grips with primary literature. That is a period in which students also focus on preparing for the project and they give a seminar onhow they intend to approach the research project. The latter is a 5-month, fully-supervised Research Project that can involve field work abroad, field work on UK farms, exerimental work in the labortaory or field. It can involve welfare or fundamental animal behaviour. We have a team of ten that currently offer diverse projects for this course and nine of these are involved in the delivery of lectures (check our web site). Project supervisors will also supervise a literature review in the broad area of the project. Knowledge gained form the course can be applied to fundamental scientific research and to practical areas such as conservation, animal husbandry and zoo environments. The MSc in Applied Behaviour Analysis is a highly interactive blended learning programme providing professionals from a wide range of backgrounds with scientifically validated expertise that is applicable to mainstream and special needs education, inclusion, curriculum, learning, and pedagogy. The programme includes a Behavior Analyst Certification Board (BACB®) approved course sequence (4th Edition Tasklist) (practice element not included).
This programme should be of interest to professionals wishing to become Board Certified Behavior Analysts, to those in the ‘helping’ professions (e.g. teachers, speech/language therapists, occupational therapists, psychologists) and students preparing for PhD studies.

What is Applied Behaviour Analysis?

Behaviour Analysis is the science of behaviour. This means that we are interested in everything a person does, including what we feel (emotional behaviour) and think (cognitive behaviour). When this science is applied to enhance or develop socially relevant behaviours we call it Applied Behaviour Analysis (ABA). There are many applications, for example, to enhance or teach communication and language skills, social skills, reading and other academic skills, life skills, business or classroom management, and many more. In other words, ABA is utilised to help many people in many situations.
Due to the effectiveness of the intervention methods and teaching techniques based on ABA, the demand for behaviour analytic services has increased worldwide, not only for individuals with autism and other special educational needs, but also for application in the mainstream inclusive classroom and many other educational, clinical, or general life contexts.

BACB Recognition

Professionals who are Board Certified Behaviour Analysts (BCBA) have the skills and knowledge to develop, implement and evaluate quality interventions that help to produce positive behavioural changes in a range of settings. The six modules of the MSc ABA cover the required academic curriculum. The programme presently does not include BACB practice requirements, but we have many national and international affiliate organisations who welcome our students and offer placements (some are paid, some unpaid) and supervision (in person or online). Supervised practice requirements can be undertaken while you are studying on the MSc ABA.

Aims

On successful completion of this programme students will be able to:
o demonstrate knowledge and understanding of any educational research, policy, practice and theory covered in the programme;
o analyse and apply critically examples of the research literature relating to the content of the programme;
o show evidence of reflection on their professional practice;
o demonstrate knowledge of a range of educational research methods;
o choose fit-for-purpose methods for a research project within the context of their own professional role;
o demonstrate engagement in the processes of research planning, data collection and analysis (as appropriate), and research reporting.

Programme Structure and Modules

Students may enrol on a full-time (1 year) or part-time (3 years) basis.
In order to be awarded the MSc ABA, students must successfully complete six taught modules (120 credits) and a dissertation (60 credits) as well as audit the Research Methods in Education online module. An exit qualification (PG Diploma ABA) is available. Students may exit with a Postgraduate Diploma in Applied Behaviour Analysis by successfully completing 120 credits from taught pathway modules.
The programme content is delivered online with multiple focused weekly virtual interactions that include peer- and tutor feedback. This structure allows for acquisition of knowledge, information sharing, development of critical thinking skills, and giving and receiving immediate feedback. An intensive on-campus 5-hour consolidation workshop takes place once during each module to give students the opportunity to meet each other and course tutors face-to-face.

The majority of students are already in relevant jobs and the job market is healthy for BCBAs at present. Professionals who are certified BCBAs have the skills and knowledge to develop, implement and evaluate quality interventions that help to produce positive behavioural changes in a range of settings. Typically, behaviour analysts work in the ‘helping’ professions (e.g. teachers, speech/language therapists, occupational therapists, psychologists). Increasingly, jobs advertised for behaviour managers or specialists require BCBA status.
There is an increasing demand for BCBAs in Europe and worldwide, especially in North America. Teachers as well as allied health professionals should find this degree beneficial in their workplace.

The Diploma/Masters in Applied Psychology (Clinical specialism) is a training programme for assistant/ associate psychologists (or equivalent) to become a more effective and strategic part of the clinical psychology workforce and deliver stepped care psychological interventions. The diploma will provide students with the psychological knowledge base and core skills in psychological assessment and circumscribed interventions as applied to at least one commonly presenting clinical population. Those who progress to the MSc will also attain knowledge and skills related to conducting and disseminating health service research.
