The Addiction Studies course is designed for students and professionals interested in the conceptualisation, treatment and prevention of addictive behaviours. It provides a widely recognised qualification with an integrated multi-disciplinary teaching and learning approach to the problems of use, dependence on alcohol, nicotine and other psychoactive drugs, and other addictive behaviours.

The course recognises that its students come from a variety of backgrounds with the goal of extending their theoretical knowledge and practical skills beyond those related to the subjects that they studied at undergraduate level. For example, a nurse or youth counsellor may wish to increase their knowledge of molecular biology or psychopharmacology, while psychology graduates may wish to increase their knowledge and familiarity with treatment options. It is for this reason that our course starts with introductory modules that ensure all students, regardless of their background, have a basic understanding of the core concepts that underlie the clinical, scientific and public health aspects of addiction before they embark on individual research and a more rigorous exploration of these areas.

This programme equips physiotherapists with the skills and knowledge to become advanced practitioners who are able to:

- Comprehensively assess and manage individuals with neuromusculoskeletal problems;

- Design, implement and evaluate rehabilitation programmes tailored to the needs of individuals with neuromusculoskeletal problems.

Modules include clinical science subjects (anatomy. biomechanics, pain physiology and muscle and exercise physiology) as well as those focussing on physiotherapy practice.

The transference of knowledge into clinical practice is facilitated during practical sessions in college and on professional practice (clinical) placements. Students who successfully complete the programme are eligible for MACP (Musculoskeletal Association of Chartered Physiotherapists) membership. The programme also supports students in their development of research skills and completion of a project.

- Course purpose

This programme provides the educational opportunities that will enable physiotherapists to develop the knowledge, research understanding, clinical, analytical and reasoning skills required for advanced physiotherapy assessment and management of people with neuromusculoskeletal conditions.

- Course format and assessment

Delivered by a combination of taught lectures, seminars, prosections, practical sessions, clinical practice placements and self-directed learning.

The MSc programme can be completed full-time over one year or part-time over two years. Other study options include; a PGDip in Advanced Phsiotheraphy (Neuromusculoskeletal) or the MSc modules can also be taken as stand-alone modules (with the exception of the Clinical Education and Research project modules).

The programme content is research and evidence-based, with the aim of developing students into excellent members of the interprofessional healthcare team. Affective disorders are also known as mood disorders and the main types include depression, bipolar disorder and anxiety disorder.

This course will adopt a multidisciplinary approach by capitalising on the most recent findings from a range of clinical and non-clinical disciplines, such as psychiatry, psychology, genetics, neuroscience, epidemiology and biostatistics. Analytical science is the key to reliable chemical analysis, which is essential to most areas of science. This programme has been designed to meet the current and future needs of chemical and pharmaceutical industries.

This unique hands-on course has been established, in recognition of the global shortage of skilled analytical scientists, with backing from many of the industry giants.

- Course purpose -

Enabling students to pursue careers in the pharmaceutical, environmental, biomedical and chemical fields applying analytical and bioanalytical methodologies. Achieved by providing a thorough grounding in separation science and mass spectrometry, together with a three-month project placement to ensure a head start into industry and a variety of career opportunities.

- Course format and assessment -

The assessment of each taught module comprises a written examination paper and coursework (scientific presentations and laboratory based problem solving exercises). On completion of each module, the appropriate three hour examination is taken in either January or May. Module The Research Project is judged on the basis of a literature review presented in June and a journal article presented in mid-August. The final examination takes place in early September, and ALL students are required to be available at this time for a poster presentation of their work. Gain a firm theoretical and practical training in fundamental and specialist technical skills and carry out an in-depth laboratory-based research project in your chosen field of specialisation. Designed for careers in a research environment or further study to PhD level.

The programme includes a 10-week laboratory experimental training period in fundamental research techniques required for biomedical and molecular biological scientists.
