Our Addiction Studies course is designed for students and professionals interested in the conceptualisation, treatment and prevention of addictive behaviours. It provides a widely recognised qualification with an integrated multi-disciplinary teaching and learning approach to the problems of use, dependence on alcohol, nicotine and other psychoactive drugs, and other addictive behaviours.

Our course recognises that its students come from a variety of backgrounds with the goal of extending their theoretical knowledge and practical skills beyond those related to the subjects that they studied at undergraduate level. For example, a nurse or youth counsellor may wish to increase their knowledge of molecular biology or psychopharmacology, while psychology graduates may wish to increase their knowledge and familiarity with treatment options. The courses offer you flexibility, to study either full or part-time and the choice of whether to study for a full master’s qualification or a Postgraduate Diploma.

The MSc consists of modules totalling 180 credits including a research project and dissertation worth 60 credits. The Postgraduate Diploma requires completed modules with a total of 120 credits to meet the requirements of the award. If you are studying full-time you will complete the course in one year studying from September to September. Part-time students will complete the course over two years.

Course accreditation

Students on the MSc in Advanced Musculoskeletal Physiotherapy (with Clinical Placements) are eligible for MACP membership on successful completion of the course. Students on the MSc in Advanced Musculoskeletal Physiotherapy are eligible to apply for MACP membership through the MACP portfolio route.

Teaching

You can expect to receive approximately 280 contact teaching hours for the MSc and 260 contact hours for the PG Dip during the courses. This will include lectures, seminars and practial sessions.

Students are expected to spend approximately two days a week studying independently and preparing for assignments during terms 1 and 2.

Students studying on the Advanced Musculoskeletal Physiotherapy (with Clinical Placements) MSc and PG Dip will also go on clinical placements totalling at least 150 hours and will have direct contact time with their mentor for at least 50% of this time. Students are expected to spend approximately 50 hours consolidating learning from clinical placements and preparing for clinical assessments.

Students on both MSc courses will also undertake the Research project module which involves approximately 20 contact hours with their project supervisor(s) and approximately 600 hours self-study.

Assessment

The primary method of assessment for this course is a combination of oral, practical and clinical assessments, written assignments, and written examination. MSc students will also be assessed through a written thesis.

The Aerospace Medicine course is a unique study pathway that provides physicians with comprehensive theoretical and practical instruction in advanced aviation physiology, psychology, pathology, clinical and operational aviation medicine.

This course includes time based at the RAF Centre of Aviation Medicine (CAM), as the Centre provides an appropriate location for valuable elements of the teaching and visits to some of the service and civilian establishments used. The Centre also offers unique practical facilities which are available to students on the course.

You will complete the MSc course in one year, studying September to September. If you are following the MSc pathway, you must take modules totalling 180 credits to meet the requirements of the qualification, of which 60 will come from a research project and written dissertation.

The Postgraduate Diploma pathway requires modules with a total of 120 credits to complete the programme and can be conducted in just over six months.

Teaching

If carrying out the MSc you will receive approximately 510 contact hours at King’s and various external study locations, primarily the RAF Centre for Aviation Medicine at Henlow – this includes lectures, seminars, practical sessions.

If you are studying for the full MSc qualification, you will be expected to spend approximately 600 hours on the research project module and thesis.

Assessment

The primary method of assessment for this course is a combination of oral presentations, written assignments and written examinations.

Course accreditation

The course at King’s is delivered at an approved centre of the Royal College of Physicians (RCP) to specifically deliver education and training for individuals wishing to take the RCP, Faculty of Occupational Medicine examination leading to the award of the Diploma in Aviation Medicine.

Location

This course is primarily taught at the King’s College London Guy’s campus, with some teaching at the RAF Centre of Aviation Medicine at Henlow as well as other locations, mainly in the UK but commonly with one overseas visit. Please note that locations are determined by where each module is taught and may vary.

Career prospects

Career opportunities in aerospace medicine are varied. Many undertaking specialist training have already been employed specifically for the role and are sponsored to undertake these courses. However others use such training so as to better equip themselves for potential employment.

Areas of possible careers include with airlines, aviation regulators, air traffic services, military aviation and space agencies as well as in academic or commercial research organisations. Some aviation medical examiners (AMEs) undertake the DAvMed. Appointment as an AME in the UK is now restricted to doctors on the GMC specialist register. 

Previous graduates of the M.Sc programme and DAvMed courses have been employed in all these areas and enjoyed a varied and challenging career.

Affective disorders are also known as mood disorders and the main types include depression, bipolar disorder and anxiety disorder. It is predicted that they will become the second leading contributor to global burden of disease by 2020 and specialist training in this area is currently sparse. The purpose of our course is to meet the growing need for a graduate training course that focuses exclusively on affective disorders.

Our Affective Disorders course is accessible to a wide audience, but would be of particular interest to psychiatrists, GPs, psychologists, related medical professionals and pharmaceutical scientists. It is especially suitable for health professionals who wish to refocus their career and specialise in Affective Disorders. It is equally suitable for health professionals who already work in a relevant field and wish to gain recognition for their expertise. Graduates who wish to pursue clinical psychology training, or research on the affective disorders may also be interested.

This course will adopt a multidisciplinary approach by capitalising on the most recent findings from a range of clinical and non-clinical disciplines, such as psychiatry, psychology, genetics, neuroscience, epidemiology and biostatistics. Upon completion, you will be able to integrate knowledge from different disciplines and relate it to the behaviours and symptoms present in affective disorders. You will benefit from the teaching of world-renowned experts in the field, conduct a research project and have the possibility to do a clinical placement across the full range of affective disorders services within the South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust. You will be taught by The Centre for Affective Disorders, which represents a centre of excellence for understanding the science related to mood and anxiety disorders and using this knowledge to develop new treatments, including both psychological and pharmacological treatments. The Ageing & Society course offers you great flexibility, with the choice to study either full or part-time and two pathways of study available; one channel focuses on quantitative research methods and data analysis while the other concentrates on qualitative research and data analysis. You will study the module Population, Ageing & Policy, plus a range of required and optional modules depending on your choice of pathway.

The MA, MSc pathway requires modules with a minimum total of 180 credits and a maximum of 185 credits to complete the course, with 60 credits coming from a dissertation of around 10,000-12,000 words.

If you are studying full-time, you will complete the course in one year, from September to September. If you are studying for the MA, MSc qualification part-time, your course will take two years to complete; you will be expected to take Population Ageing & Policy, Designing Quantitative Research and a 15-20 credit optional module in year one, with the remaining modules taken in year two.

Lectures, seminars and feedback: The total contact time for each 15-credit taught module is 10-15 hours. These sessions will include lectures, teacher-led and student-led group discussions based on the main areas of study.

Self-study: Each 15-credit taught module has approximately 135 hours of self-guided learning time.

Dissertation module: You will receive three dissertation workshops that are each two hours long plus six additional 30 minute one-toone dissertation supervision and group consultations.

Assessment

The primary method of assessment for this course is a combination of essays, written examinations and oral presentations. The MA, MSc study programme also requires a 10-12,000 word supervised dissertation on the subject of ageing and society.
